In the course of various threads, both serious and silly, I or others have pointed out Rufus's medicinal qualities. So, I thought I'd gather some of them here.
1. It has been speculated that he might serve as a safer form of hormone replacement therapy, since he sets our hormones raging (okay, this unproven speculation was mainly by Tipou and me, because we're very concerned with science).
2. I have mentioned how listening to Rufus's reading of Joseph Andrews on my ipod has gotten me to, at last, make a serious attempt at fitness. I listen while I work out and don't even really know the time is passing. I mean, talk about moving mountains!
3. I hope catdishy won't mind me quoting her from another thread:
Anybody else?

well, dearest friend, since you made the great compliment of alluding to some kind of a scientific mind to my idle researches, i thought it would perhaps be acceptable to your sensible judgement to allow myself a comment, in the pure intention of assisting you, however humbly, in your own endeavour.
(sorry, i've been watching middlemarch for the last hour and a half, might have had some effect on me, stylistically)
1. rufus having dealt in classics quite a bit, it might be believed that watching his movies made me less of a stupid person. knowledge and intelligence might not be the goal of alternate medecine, and it very well might appear foolish of me to push forward such a consideration, but i like to think that an influx of culture might improve the quality of one's life in general, by possibly training the brain to take better care of its precious cradle, the human body.
2. having been boyfriend-less for a while, since danny is away for professional duties, i might very well have sinked into some kind of a depressed state (especially at this time of year). may i respectfully offer to your scholar's approval the theory that rufus movies might act upon the serotonine levels, and so act as a natural anti-depressant, since i can still find myself smiling languidly at the television screen, experiencing a state of well-being and serenity that might be otherwise difficult to reach without the external input.
again, it is in all humility that i offer these thoughts for your superior ponderation.
(now, back to middlemarch, oh boy is she going to shag rufus? he's too cute, and look at the old bat she's stuck with, and i bet the old fart can't even get it up, he's so stuck up and sinister, and rufus is certainly willing to drop the breeches once again, the way he looks at her, oh my god oh my god)

Hmmm, medicinal qualities. I think we should include improvement to the circulatory system, as he certainly gets our hearts pounding when we watch those brilliant performances.
tipou, I didn't realize you hadn't finished watching Middlemarch. Can't wait to hear your comments! I was just catching up on that thread recently and thinking of sharing some thoughts of my own. That's the movie that first planted Rufus in my consciousness, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.

I definitely concur with this Middlemarchian scientific analysis, mainly cuz I can't understand a word you're saying. So it must be right.
Ah, back to modern English. Yes, absolutely! And may I say that I like the way you back up your theory with hard facts.
Excellent addition, lizap! For those of us who can't bring ourselves to work out yet, maybe Rufus viewing is a good start toward heart health.

He aids my cognitive behaviour therapy - when I practice thought stopping (as I do, often!) I have a repertoire of Rufus thoughts to focus my attention on let us say more positive things!!! I can run through almost any of his movies in my head these days - well, selected scenes anyway - and that helps the unwelcome thoughts take a hike.

Another fine example, Quoll. He really is easy to focus on. He could totally replace "ohmmmm" for yoga practitioners.
Tell me, do you just have a really good memory, or could that be due to repeated exposure?

... or, perhaps rufus has the power of increasing human memory powers. which would be no small feat.

You mean you can THINK while watching him?? I just kind of go "Guhhhh...." a lot.
And drool.

You mean you can THINK while watching him?? I just kind of go "Guhhhh...." a lot. And drool. think of it as an unconscious effect. parts of the brains are stimulated while you go guhhh and drool (and not only the pleasure centers either). so while you go guhhh and drool, you are actually getting more intelligent, just when you would believe that you look like a twit. oh... and i go guhhhh too. AND drool.

LOL, GE2! Well, that too can be considered therapy--sort of a primal scream type method where you revert to your primitive urges in order to cleanse yourself of stress.
Tip, I believe you've hit on another possibility. Will you test this theory by seeing if you can memorize Marco's appearance in the bed scene?

I CAN. I TOTALLY CAN. and the picture is very clear in my mind. for BOTH bed scenes with marco, BTW.

BOTH bed scenes? Um, what? Seems my memory needs a Rufus injection. Off to youtube.

oh come on! either you have a censored copy, or very poor memory indeed!
there is the first time they sleep together, its the longest scene of the two, i believe they just about prove they might have been going through the kama sutra from cover to cover (naughty bits as a bonus), and then there is the very short scene where they escape before veronica is arrested, and it's got a very nice view of rufus in bed in bday suit, perfect for freeze frame - no naughty bits though.
see? great effect on memory. but unfortunately, seems to be a partial and very choosy influence, since i still can't remember what i ate yesterday.

Darn--I've only seen Dangerous Beauty on youtube, and there is no such escape scene. It goes right from removal of her mother's body to the arrest. Fortunately, the more important, naughty bits scene seems to be intact. At least it's an influence with excellent priorities. Now I have another absolutely true medical story to tell: Today, in the shower, I got a tiny dab of pore-cleansing cream in my eye. I can't adequately tell you how much it hurt. It hurt so much that I immediately screamed the F word, and I never, ever do that. It hurt more than the time I got an eyeful of latex paint when I was on the losing end of a battle between my paintbrush and a wasp. Why am I telling you this? First, because you can't stop me. Second, because after rinsing and rinsing for about 10 minutes, I still couldn't open my eye, so I went to my computer with a wet cloth on my eye. Naturally I checked out the boards since I was too incapacitated to work. And I went into the This One or That One thread, because I saw my fellow scientist Tipou had made a post, and I saw the pics of Rufus as Aggamemnon again. I swear, without even thinking, I took the cloth down from my eye and just started looking. Eye healed. End of story.
