Please post your reviews here - either your own thoughts on the production, or ones you find in newpapers/online that give the plot away. Looking forward to some great reading!

Well, I'm not great with words but all I'm going to say is... I loved it - SPOLIERS -Found the storyline a bit strange, with the caves to the house and everything but it was funny as well as dramatic. That last scene in the elevator I just loved. I also really liked the way it was filmed - the camera angles and such (I forget what the correct terminology is). Can't wait for next week's episode

The plot was a bit confusing, wasn't it? Going to have to watch it again. To untangle the plot, of course. Nothing to do with watching Rufus again. Oh, and the throwing up scene = nice bum!

GE II--I found Vendetta the most confusing of all the Zen books, so I'm not surprised if you really were a bit confused by the plot. (Besides, who needs an excuse to watch Rufus as Zen again Certainly not us!) At first I thought following Vendetta was a little tricky only because I read it out of order, before RatKing. But I would say, after reading the entire series, that Vendetta maybe has just a slightly murkier storyline than the other novels in the series. The reader AND Zen both discover that his current case has unsuspected roundabout links (and consequences) to an old one. After reading the above (and earlier reviewers) praises of the "hot" lift scene--and just now reading about Rufus' comments concerning it (Basically-they had to do it in one take because Caterina was rushing to make a plane)-- makes me think the great result ( ) must have been a by- product of both actors having to really just "go for it" because they knew it was their only chance! Lets hope that Rufus has more shotgun-shooting kissing scenes in the future! ;D

Fantastic!! Rufus was great as were the rest of the cast but I agree with Judy, I also expected the mother to be older. Also the music gave it a cheesy feel. Overall though I loved it and i will definitely be watching it next week.
Going by twitter he has a lot more female fans now!

Guessing it will take about a nano- second after Zen airs for this board to be graced with new members. Can't wait to try the expat/i player thing tomorrow to try to watch Zen when I'm able. Hope it works like it sounds like it did for Judy. (It will be available for online viewing for a few days at least won't it? Like Eleventh Hour was shown on the NBC site?) Fingers crossed.

Programmes are usually on the i-Player for 7 days - having said that, just checked and it looks like Vendetta is up for 21 days.

I have to say, like many others here, I love and revere the people who came up with Expat Shield. Getting to watch Zen as it was intended and not having to wait for the DVDs is sooo wonderful. Now on to my review. Like everyone else, I loved it! And not just for Rufus, though he did look spectacular. I love mysteries, they're my favorite genre, so when I heard Rufus was cast as Zen I read all the books. And the books are very, very, well written. So I'm glad to see that the writers who adapted the novel kept so much of the original. They had great source material and they didn't muck it up. My only gripes: like many others, I found Zen's mother too young. In the novels she's definitely elderly and a bit senile, which is why Zen has brought her to live with him. Second - why in the heck did they set the crime in Sicily? The book took place in Sardinia. What, the writers decided that one Italian island is as good as another? Part of the charm of the Dibdin books is that each one is set in a different city in Italy, and the setting is important to the story. Third - while yes, they had to cut stuff out of the book, they cut out waaay to much of the back story of Lucia. [That's what makes the plot confusing to me, no rhyme or reason for why she killed Burolo and the others. The completely cut out how she resented the people who took over her home - how truly mentally disturbed she was. Just a brief mention that she was "to far gone. My last gripe, in the book the victims were Burolo, his wife, his business partner and his partner's wife who were killed. I feel like they made this meaningless change (Burolo and 3 hookers being killed) just so they could have that 15 seconds of video showing the one hooker stripping. Needless titillation. But this is just me being nitpicky. Overall, it was great. The dialog was witty and the settings beautiful. Loved the light touch, the great one-liners they gave him, even while keeping the serious tone of a murder mystery. Rufus did a great job of portraying a man who is conflicted. Trying to balance his desire to do the right thing and his real need to live in the world he inhabits. I loved the scene where he tells Tania that he never saw himself as "that guy" the one who would break up a marriage. The cave scene had me on the edge of my seat. I actually had to remind myself that this is just a TV show, of course he's going to be ok. It was scary, creepy, suspenseful. I definitely think that this episode lived up to all the hype. I'll be interested to see what the 'official' reviews are. I'm really excited that Rufus had the opportunity to headline is such an excellent production. It really highlighted his talent, his ability to do action, light comedy, romance. I can't wait for the next episode.

WOO HOO!!!!!!! I'll warn you now that this will be less of a review and more of a giddy fangirly ramble about the gorgeousness that is Aurelio Zen!!! If only i could wake up to him every Monday morning - oh, wait, i will be able to for the next two weeks!!!!!! And it looks like lots more people have woken up to Mr Zen - 492 guests in the past 24 hours. Where were those last 8 people to give us an even 500? ? And let us all bow down to Ms Patooty for putting us on to Expat Shield. The torrent doesn't seem to be up anywhere so i'd still be waiting without it! Aurelio, Aurelio, Aurelio. For me (as Roof would say), he's a little bit Jacob (very dry, laconic, a bit of an anti-hero when it comes to the physical stuff and clever, clever, clever) and a little bit Petruchio (that twinkle in the eye - Aurelio makes me think of what Petruchio would have been like if he ever had to actually get a job and settle down - the end result of years of running on the hamster wheel). But for as much as Rufus has said that he's a bit tattered, that he's just lucky to fall on his feet (even though he hurts them when he lands!!!), i have to disagree. As a viewer, i'm sorry Roof, but ZEN IS COOL. Very, very cool. And that's all there is i'm afraid!! Jesus even his Mum is cool!! I agree with the previous comments that she is younger than I imagined, and they also seem to have changed the whole basis of their living together. In the book he was worried about her because of her increasing senility and loneliness living in Venice on her own and he moved her to Rome to live in his apartment, complete with her houseful of Venetian furniture which doesn't quite fit. Whereas in the show he seems to be living with her because he's separated from his wife. And she doesn't appear the least bit old or senile!!! The plot made enough sense to me - in fact it made more sense than the book did. I might have to go back and have a look, but are there things that they changed/simplified from the book?? Maybe it was because i was mainly reading the book for Aurelio and his personal life and didn't pay as much attention to the plot as i did in the show, but it did seem a bit more simple. But in terms of what we (well me anyway) are interested in ie, Aurelio's love life, I think there was more emphasis on his relationship with Tania than in the book. In fact it almost seemed an even spread of personal and professional which i loved. I might change my mind down the track, depending on what happens in the next two instalments, but i'm not feeling the urge to write and expand on the episode because it was well enough done by itself. Of course when they get down to business and we're given some kissing followed by a cut away and the morning after armpit, i might change my mind. But really, there wasn't enough time for any more lift action than we got (complete with sexy music!!!!). Of course, Aurelio could have "accidentally" leaned on the stop button............ But there was certainly lots and lots to love - i can't wait to go back and watch it again because i'm sure there will be plenty of little gems to talk about. One of the things i loved was the car chase - we never get to see Rufus in a car chase, although i must admit to thinking that Rachel would not have been happy to see him driving like that!!!! But my favourite bit (apart from the kissing of course!!), and that little bit that someone mentioned before when the Russian wife invited him upstairs - obviously not an offer he gets every day - were all the scenes when he looked like this: I'd like to make a comment about exactly how i wanted to clean that blood off of his face, but i don't want to scare away our 492 guests!!! Not yet anyway............ ;D

First, let me add my thanks to Judy for the Expat Shield advice. It's brilliant.
Loved the show. I liked the music especially - gave it that old feeling of Route 66 or 77 Sunset Strip - but of course Zen's mother & I are much too young to remember those shows....
Sooooo much better than Eleventh Hour, but don't get me started on that again. Did like the "I remember it fondly" line too.
Looking forward to more.

Now you mention blood, how did the russian wife stop herself cleaning the blood of his face for him? I wanted to clean his face and I was sat in my living room unable to do anything, if I was stood next to him then I know I wouldn't have been able to control that urge.
