Thanks Rai - what a really interesting article. A real look at what it is to be a "normal" person thrust into the limelight and to ultimately walk away from it. A bit sad that she was depressed after The Woodlanders was released - i've often wondered how it must feel to see months and months of hard work and friendships and emotions culled down to 90 minutes of film. And good on her - we always knew she must have kept stuffing that scene up on purpose!!!! 20 takes - you go Em I think i'm going to pass out. Hold me tighter Giles.............

Interesting article - thanks, Rai. It's funny that her being in awe of Rufus matches his own feelings about being around actors such as Christopher Walken, but she didn't see that side of him - I suppose then (before the change in his attitude that he has said came with Billy's arrival) he came across a more of a cocky, jack-the-lad type. I felt sad that she didn't include him in her list of people she considered "have a reckless ability to throw themselves deep into their characters" - that's how I see his approach to his characters now (well, not reckless - meticulous), and I wonder if her view of him would change if she worked with him again now. I have to say, I was never happy with her as Grace. She never felt right in the role to me, rather too wishy-washy - much as I loved Jodhi May as Marty, she would have made a better Grace. But what a great excuse inexperience was for fluffing the takes of that kiss!! (Director): Cut! Try AGAIN! Come on, you two, you've been trying to get that kiss right for six weeks now!

Thanks rai A fascinating article. I can't believe she only needed 20 takes ! It must have gone something like - Director "cut...cut, I said cut. For goodness sake put him down Emily !!" LOL

"Who wouldn't want to do 20 takes of a kiss with Rufus Sewell?" Right Emily, WHO? No one over here, surely! Thanks Rai. GE2, she was too much taken up to kiss Rufus for noticing his talent and "ability to throw himself deep into his character".

Thanks...great article. Nice to always hear how likeable RS is with his co-stars. Never hear anything bad about him. Hes not difficult to work with like you hear about others. Love his story at Sundance about working with CW on Illuminata, so I can see him talking about "Hollywood" and some of its craziness! What a great guy! And yes...I would have to have lots of "direction" on the kissing scene...maybe 50-75 takes!
Interesting about Kate W. I always wonder who is up for parts, on the wish list vs who gets them in the end.

Thanks for posting this, Rai. It would have been an interesting article about her experiences even if it hadn't included the mentions of Rufus. But of course, the fact that it did made it fascinating! Lucky woman.

Rai, Thanks for posting this very interesting article. I really admire Emily Woof for her honesty as she looks back to her experiences in the film industry. So much politics embedded even in such a creative medium. And the 20 takes for a kissing scene with Rufus...... well, you know what they say about too much of a good thing. HA! That absolutely does NOT apply here !!!!!! QUESTION: Emily stated that Rufus "Had just finished filming a film in Hollywood". Does anyone know which one it was?

i loved this article, rai. reminds us that actors are human too, and the roles we see them in are definitely not their whole lives - not even a true part of it. it must feel so diminutive to be judged by something that is, after all, so artificial, while it is the stuff of their art. quite a paradox. she is one beautiful human being.

Wish I could answer your question Spice, but because release dates surely don't always jibe in order of filming I couldn't tell via imdb. Hamlet was released just prior to Woodlanders, and Carrington, Victory, Cold Comfort Farm are possibilties too. None that screamed filmed in Hollywood to me. I'm not much a sleuth or help, eh? sorry. As for those twenty takes of Rufus kissing--it sure paid off in that I always thought the Woodlanders kissing scene by the tree was softly sensuous and extremely well done. Romantic. Hmmm, it has been a looong time since I've watched Woodlanders...it deserves another go...although the film's ending is so very hard to watch, it's so pathetically sad. Wonderfully done, but terribly heartwrenching. Not to mention you want to seriously slap her up for being such a selfish callow b*tch!! Ha ha.
