I've cancelled my DVD and bought the film in HD on iTunes. It's very good film though typical of it's genre; quirky, melancholic, and often very dour. Sometimes these stories don't work so well when taken from print to screen because they rely on an almost poetic style of the writing to lift the gloomy subject matter, but this managed to walk the fine line needed to generate a sense of cathartic nostalgia. It had some lovely moments, great acting all round, including the kids (two of whom played very convincing nasty little brats!) and it's beautifully shot. Rufus character is very odd at times but also very charming. I'll try and figure out a way to make some nice screen caps at some point.

Thanks, Annejanet. Let's hope the delay is because they are adding extras. Thanks for your review, RoofieRoo. Looking forward to seeing your screencaps!

After I changed the country I found it, but I think I would need a new ID. Otherwise it always leads me back to German iTunes. But to be honest not for this price as I would prefer to buy it. Then I wait for the DVD.

Thanks for the review Roofieroo! I have just watched The Sea and I agree with you to a certain extent. However, having read the book which I found rather boring until the conclusion, I was very pleasantly surprised. It is as you say very atmospheric, beautifully filmed and the haunting violin music throughout is quite wonderful. It is somewhat dour in parts but that is the nature of the story. I thought it was well cast and the acting is excellent. They are all good in the parts they play but Rufus is excellent as the quirky Carlo. He is quite simply brilliant in it. It is a memorable little film which deserves to be a classic. I loved it.

Yay! My dvd arrived. I've only been back home a few hours and it arrived. What a welcome home pressie For those interested the special features are a theatrical trailer (the one we've seen I imagine) and stills gallery.

I have just received my DVD but I am very much missing English sub-titles. As I have red the book I can follow the story. Otherwise I think it had been nearly impossible. It is a fantastic book and I think the film is as good as the book. The casting is very well and Carlos is a very good caracter for Rufus.
