The trip to Brooklyn went well. The weather was nice so we got to do a lot of walking around and sightseeing. The basketball - not so good. They won the play-in game for the tournament and then lost the next night. Daughter and husband were both pretty disgusted, team lead the entire game and then collapsed in the last 5 minutes. Just like they did for most of the season.
Back at work today and working like mad to catch up.

Glad you had a nice time Rachel. Hope you get caught up at work. My team lost as well. Hopefully they will get it together for NCAA tourney. I did get my closet cleaned out with nervous energy while watching the game.

Hi all, I've been radio silent for the last two weeks because I've been dealing with some difficult personal and professional issues and have needed time to get my head around things. Personal first - husband has three sisters. Middle sister has been having health issues since January - recurring urinary tract infections, abdominal pain, etc. Two weeks ago she finally got a diagnosis. She has a rare form of cancer - vaginal cancer. At first she/we were told that it was treatable with a good 5 year survival rate. Then she was told that no, it was actually stage 4 and she is essentially terminal. With very aggressive treatment she might have 5 years. Most likely less and if no treatment she may have only 5 months. As you can imagine, the whole family is in a bit of shock as SIL struggles with what she wants to do. To her quality of life is the paramount issue, she's not sure how aggressive she wants to be. She doesn't want to be constantly sick from radiation and chemo. What she has asked for - and husband, daughter, and I strongly support - is that the family accept whatever decision she makes.
Now professional - we've had a vacancy here (known about it since October, person actually left January 3). The position was one level down from me on the organizational chart. I knew the director was thinking of a re-organization but not sure what he wanted to do. Two weeks ago I found out. Went to my regular weekly meeting with him to find him with a representative from our HR department. He then handed me the new org chart and my name was not on it. He totally blind-sided me. My current position was re-titled and listed as vacant. A new, lower position, in an area I currently supervise, was also listed as vacant. I was told I had the option of taking this position or going over the severance package they had prepared for me. So after 28 years in this job I have been demoted and given an 8% pay cut. What really rankles is that my boss could not look me in the eye or give me a reason why I was ousted from my position. I am slowly coming to terms with this but it has been difficult.
Not to dump on all of you but it helps sometimes to put it out there when things are going badly.

Oh my gosh Rachel, that is terrible news. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Sorry to hear about your position at work. Its very scary as it can happen to any one at any time. Such a blow. Doesn't sound like your boss handled that very well. I hope life gets better for you!

Kygal, we certainly can use the prayers. Latest news is that SIL had another scan late last night and now she's scheduled for surgery first thing Monday.
As for my boss, no he did not handle this well. Quite a few people told me after the meeting that they were now fearful about their own jobs. They felt that if he could do that to me he could do it to them also.

Oh no Rachel! Hope your SIL does well with surgery.
Its a shame they can do this to long-term employees. Are you planning to stay for now? Its difficult to start over. Same thing happened to my brother fairly close to retirement.
On a much lighter note. Congrats to Virginia making it to the final four (not sure you cheer for them). We hope to see you there but we have to make it past the red hot Auburn Tigers.
Have at great week to all. Cant believe tomorrow is April 1.

Kygal, yes I'm staying, I'm 3 years from retirement and realistically can't expect to find another job that pays anything like what I'll be making even with the pay cut. I plan to do the best darn job possible to prove to my boss what a mistake he made. Especially since I expect that other parts of the organization will start slipping.

Good for you Rachel. I would do the same!
Well our team is done. Got out-played and didn't play like we wanted to win. At least my bracket has survived (barely).
Happy April 1!

Kygal, but at least Duke lost! I never have a bracket so I don't have to worry about it getting busted. Husband and daughter were complaining about their brackets yesterday. I have to say my favorite part of March Madness is the Spike Lee/Samuel L. Jackson/Charles Barkley Capital One commercials. They are so silly you can't help but laugh.

LOL! Yes! I love those commercials! And sorry Duke fans but I am happy with that loss.
Have a great day!

Nature obviously pulled an April Fool's Day prank on us. Yesterday was a perfect spring day, mild and sunny. Yep, spring had begun. April Fool! Today, back to cold and rain. I have to admit though tomorrow looks to be a nice day so maybe spring really is here.

Only two more weeks until girls' beach week for me. I'm already thinking about menus and wine and movies to take along. I'm hoping the weather warms up before we hit the beach.
