If Rufus is in the cast I am really going to try and see this. It really depends on what my next job is and when I am due to take up post, but if I can get to NYC, even for just a few days, I am so there!
Sweet!

Confession Time: I admit I would feel disappointed/concerned if Rufus did Rock 'n' Roll again. There I have said it!! He has won so many awards for playing Jan that I fear he would put himself under a lot of pressure trying to perfect the role even more. Wouldn't he get bored playing that same character again?

Yes, I also wondered if he'd really want to revive his role as Jan. I'm inclined to think that he'd rather have exciting new offers to choose from this Fall. Of course he may feel a certain obligation to accept if asked by Mr. Nunn or Mr. Stoppard. What do you all think?

I think a Tony would look awfully good next to that Olivier.

and didn't Rufus himself mention that he (and the play) might be in New York in the fall (that was when he was here for The Holiday premiere in December.

I wouldn't be concerned or disappointed. In my book doing an esteemed play on B'way is a good gig for any actor. Plus, he's expressed more than once that he wants to do it. From what we've heard he really enjoyed doing the play in London so I can only imagine that doing the play in New York with all your old mates is going to be lots of fun.
I'd be worried if he took Extreme Ops 2, not RnR on the Great White Way. Imho!

From what we've heard he really enjoyed doing the play in London Yeah, but wasn't there that comment at (I think) the Evening Standard awards, something like it got to the point where he couldn't wait for the tea-breaks? 5 months of doing 8 performances a week must have felt like a heck of a grind towards the end. On the other hand, as you say, doing it again with the original cast on Broadway might be too much for him to resist - a bit of distance from the exhaustion could work wonders. I'd be amazed, though, if he does a long run - 6 weeks, tops.

Um, he'll have to commit to enough of a run for the investors to recoup some of the investment. Remember, theatre in the US is a money making enterprise and not gov funded. And he is the show. He will be the box office draw in NYC with all of the awards behind him--IF he does it. I wouldn't be surprised to find that before they decided to bring it, they at least got a verbal commitment from him. Personally, I can't wait to see what happens with this because the logistics are really difficult on a number of levels not the least of which are some antiquated union rules about what constitutes a musical. it's going to be fun. And I can't wait to see it again. I don't think you'll find many actors who would admit this unless they were very spoilt. So many people starve trying to do what they love. It's just a pleasure to be able to perform in front a live audience every night.

You'll be delighted to hear that your favourite boyo - bar Rufus - Ioan Gruffudd responded to my question at the AG Q&A on whether he was planning to do theatre that he had done some while he was at RADA but was now more interested in tv and film because actually, he got pretty bored of playing the same part after 5 performances. Do you love him even more now?? ;D

The latest from Sir Tom: The next Stoppard stage saga to reach New York will be his current London hit, Rock 'n' Roll, which covers 1968-1990 from the double perspective of Prague (where a rock band comes to stand for Communist resistance) and of Cambridge (where the verities of love and death shape three generations of a Marxist philosopher's family). The play won the Critics' Circle Theatre Award as 2006's best, but Sunday during the FireBird reveling it lost the Olivier Award (as did Peter Morgan's also-Broadway-bound Frost/Nixon) to David Harrower's Blackbird, which flies to Manhattan Theatre Club's Stage II April 10. "Rock 'n' Roll is coming over in November," promised the author, "and I hope it comes over with as many of the cast as possible." [He's talking Rufus Sewell, who has already told the press he plans to be on board, and Brian Cox, whose son Alan is currently representing the family on Broadway in Translations at the Biltmore.] Stoppard said his lead producers in London, Sonia Friedman and Bob Boyett, are bringing the show over. www.playbill.com/news/article/105873.html
