Yes we all mourn differently some more than others. I was terribly upset when Lennon was mudered, I grew up with the Beatles, talk about creative genious......no sequins, no costumes, just raw emotion and amazing music. All I am saying is that our country concerns itself way too much with the whole idolotry of celebrity, and personally I am sick to death of it. The death of Jackson aside. I can't stand to watch local news anymore, if that's what you want to call it, 30 seconds of real news then sports, and entertainment. Sadly this is what passes for news. There is too much emphasis on the wrong things. That's all I was trying to say.

DGD and Peach, not that i want to play the umpire here, but i do honestly believe that you both are right in what you say.
mj WAs a creative powerhouse mj WAS a troubled individual mj WAS a human being media FEED on human beings media FEED on troubled individuals but WE consume the media.
my sister-in-law works in montreal for the publisher of (among other things) a weekly magazine that focuses on "stars". the day after mj passed away, this publisher distributed in stores a "michael jackson special edition".
it had been prepared months before, in case such a profitable tragedy would occur, and regularly updated. they have hundreds of such "special editions" ready - brangelina, the pope, celine dion, obama, tom cruise, mandela, madonna.... and so on and so forth.
apparently this kind of things is frequent, i may sound very naive but i did not know. if a notable celeb pops an artery, the trucks are ready to be packed and sent accross the province to deliver the good news.
all through that week end following mj's death, my sister-in-law felt sick to her stomach.
another true story. very shortly after john lennon's death, i was offered a job at a tee-shirt manufacturer's company in montreal. being a very poor and needy student, i accepted the under-the-table S**tty pay and the night-shift. they were working around the clock to take advantage of one of the beatles' demise. my job was to put the lennon items in plastic packaging. i felt quite bad doing it, but i needed the money.
on the second night, i quit the job mid-shift. just took my purse and left without a word. sudden burst of conscience? well... maybe being asked to bag dog tees bearing the word "imagine" under lennon's pic was just a little too much for me.
but who is to blame? the money-grabbers who actually sell that S**t, or those who actually BUY the stuff ?
not really by choice, but most of all because of all the commotion since my father became very ill, and since his death, i have prettty much given up on television, radio, newspapers and such. simply not enough time.
somehow, reading about wheter brad pitt is cheating, or watching the Canadien's millionaire hockey players lazily losing the Stanley Cup was a bit over my head while my family was going through hell.
such a distance from mainstream media gives you a different focus on things. it's a very odd feeling, really.
so, i have not purchased the mj special edition mags. i have not even watched the funerals. instead, i purchased some mj songs online and played them, dancing and feeling joyful. because that is what mj's music was about.
i still wonder what will be done with the money i spent for the songs though...
***** tip!!! down the soap box !!!! now !!!! *****

I love your posts Tip. And Peach I agree...Celebrity gossip and society's obsession is rather wrong. I don't actually watch local or national news unless I have to. At work we have a big TV that is always on CNN or Fox News Network. I tend to read whatever is on Yahoo!'s homepage...if it's stupid like the whole Jon and Kate thing..I read it for a laugh... I did watch the Memorial, I bought the People Magazine special double issue...(mainly because I was manning a booth and wanted something to read), but I won't buy the crazy shirts and trinkets that are bound to be out there...I do more of what Tip did...I drive down the street with "Billy Jean" blasted, or watch the video for "Earth Song" and wonder why we havn't opened our eyes about what we are doing to ourselves and our planet. That is the biggest thing I hope everyone takes away from all this. Life is short, resources are finite and we need to take care of each other and our home. .

Tip, as always a treat reading your posts so well written and to the point. I'm just not in a good mood, and was a bit hot under the collar. I consider the press leeches, and damned irresponsible. Death it seems is indeed big business and those that stand to make a profit off of the dearly departed, I hope there is a special ring in hell for the lot of them. That;s all I will say on this subject.

If it bleeds, it leads. Golden rule of journalism. I hate it too.

DGD you are so right, I sometimes hate myself for even buying those rags. I think the tipping point for me was the tragic senseless death of Princess Diana, those blasted papparazzi, those bloodsuckers were at least partly to blame for her death, and then to take photos. Unbelievable. But sadly the golden rule does hold true, and as long as people buy it, it will be published.

Yeah Princess Di made me very angry at the paparazzi...good thing they aren't quite that rabid here in the states...they are bad...but not as bad bad as Europe.
And that video....FRIGGEN SWEET.... Gives you chills...

That news on CNN that evening was a shock for me. Another celebrity of my youth was gone. But his music rests for all time in the hearts of the true fans. Yes, I love his music a lot! And yes, the cd's are playing now very often in my cd-player. It is a great loss for the music world, but MJ now has his peace. I think so. He was a very poor man, hunted by paparazzi. Everywhere he go, the camera's were there too. I remember the pic's from a visit in a german zoo... HORROR for him and his children.
I hope, the children will have a calm childhood without being hunted by photographers. I wish it for them! And I better be silent about my thoughts about the father...

Joe Jackson is a waste of human flesh! Did I say that well enough for ya? lol
And an interesting side note. My roller derby league is preparing to do the Thriller dance during Halftime at our October 30th bout. We are halfway through learning the dance, and I can seriously say that MJ was a friggin genius when it came to dancing. The dance itself is complicated and draining. I go home after a rehearsal sweaty and exhausted, but oddly satisfied. Maybe it's because I realize how much I love learning the dance with my derby peeps, or maybe it's a sense of accomplishment...who knows, but I thank MJ for giving us a kick ass dance to learn and watch.

The really sad thing is I'll bet Joe is already dipping his hands in the "This Is It" cookie jar, and the movie hasn't even come out yet!
