Following a successful run in London’s West End, winning the London Evening Standard and London Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards for Best New Play, Rock ‘N’ Roll director Trevor Nunn will bring his cast to Broadway. Brian Cox, Sinead Cusack and Rufus Sewell are among the stars of the cast that will also feature Nicole Ansari and Alice Eve. Sewell won the Olivier, Evening Standard and London Critics' Circle awards for his performance.
The drama – set alternately in Prague, Czechoslovakia and Cambridge, England from 1968 through the fall of Communism – deals with the trade-offs made to protect ideas as complex and yet simple as the ability to play your rock 'n' roll records. Rock ‘N’ Roll is dedicated to dramatist and former Czech president Vaclav Havel who, incidentally, attended the London premier along with Mick Jagger. They're both referenced in the play itself, along with Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett and the Beach Boys, to name a few.
The premiere of Rock 'N' Roll marks the 40th anniversary since British dramatist Tom Stoppard was first introduced to Broadway audiences with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.
