Special effects upgrades, new score and it looks like it's longer - and interviews! www.scificool.com/david-goyer-confirms-re-release-of-dark-city-with-new-sfx/While on the set of his upcoming film UNBORN, writer-director David Goyer updated us on the re-release of DARK CITY, which he wrote for Alex Proyas to direct. “It’s coming out fairly soon [and will] probably have limited theatrical, but Im not sure,” he explains, “I have seen almost all of it and I took part in an over hour long making-of.”
In addition to the special features, Goyer reveals that there’s more to the re-release than just special FX upgrades. “[They re-did] the score and the cuts a little longer,” he reveals, “all of the parties involved did fairly lenghtly interviews with us, they’ll be incluced on there.”
Yayy!

That is so great! My husband's been dying for this to happen. I hate to keep saying "Rufus said this, Rufus said that", but when we talked to him about DC in London, he said that he had done the interviewing stuff for the re-release.
I didn't like the music score. I hope they changed it completely. And I also hope they took away the dumb introduction which gave the entire plot away.

There's an interview with director Alex Proyas here. www.twitchfilm.net/site/view/alex-proyas-interview-dark-city-directors-cut-and-more/Interesting bit: BLAKE: What is the biggest difference between it and the original? ALEX PROYAS: The general pace of the movie is quite different. The director’s cut more or less is the version I had originally sent out when I was first testing the movie. We had problems in testing and it’s why the studio had us add in the voice overs, which I thought was rubbish really! My instinct then was when something wasn’t playing right to speed it up and I’ve never been happy with that, so this version is back to a more leisurely and thoughtful pace it was meant to be. The voice over from the beginning is gone of course. There is also a few scenes added back that were ditched that I think are perfectly good scenes and I have no idea why we dropped them then. I’m really happy with it! You’re allowed into the world more and you have more time with its characters. Literally almost every scene has another line of dialogue or stuff at the beginning or end. Some people may not notice a difference, but I think you should still feel a difference. I like it a lot more than the theatrical cut.

Can't wait for my Amazon order to arrive! I got an email that it's been shipped. Meanwhile, good stuff to look forward to: The Blu-Ray version of this modern classic is one of the best DVD releases of the year. Ignore the fact that the director's cut is now the only version of Dark City that we should be watching or that this is the BEST video quality I've seen on the market yet, the special features on this WB/New Line release are spectacular. Start with the feature-length documentary about the making-of the film, which basically consists of interviews with Proyas, Dobbs, Goyer, Sewell, and other people involved with the production, before moving into interviews with critics and scholars about what the film means to them. It's a fantastic documentary - much more than just the EPK, talking-head junk that usually makes up these special features. The critical analysis of the film in "Architecture of Dreams" will enhance your enjoyment of Dark City immensely, but if it's not enough, there are FIVE commentary tracks on the film itself. Five! Honestly, I haven't had the time to get through them all but I look forward to doing so. Other great features include a production gallery, text essays, a review of the film by Neil Gaiman, and the theatrical trailer. In "Memories of Shell Beach", Goyer and Sewell both mention that they're constantly approached and told by fans that Dark City is one of their favorite movies. Goyer even goes as far as to say that he thinks the film is the best he's been involved in. At the same time, Proyas talks about how he's approached often but usually by fans who wonder why this great movie was never released in theaters. That's how few people saw and appreciated Dark City in 1998. The film has grown a cult following on DVD in the last decade and that small group of loyal fans is about to become a movement. A great movie has received a perfect Blu-Ray treatment. There is movie justice, even if it takes ten years to get it. www.thedeadbolt.com/news/104826/darkcity_blurayreview.php
