That yelling scene is excellent. First he's all subdued and hissing with suppressed rage and suddenly it BURSTS out of him. As I quoted before....if he'd really yell at me in real life (hopefully never); I'd pray that I am a snail so I could just crowl back in to my shell and cry in it.

Can't blame you. But as I'm a Scorpio too, I'd probably just holler back at the same volume

Kissmekate, that book sounds interesting! A story worth making into a film I think. I'll see if I can find it too - though my German is quite rusty (the only practice I get these days is while re-watching old Schimanski krimi's). Love your screencaps of young Marke, especially this one: I'd take him home anytime if I found him in the street with that stray-cat-look.

Give it a try, I loved the story, it's not your run-of-the-mill historical fiction. (And definitely worthy of a film. The lead would be clear, we'll just have to find his female counterpart and a replacement for Tristan who can do more than one facial expression.) I'd take him home anytime if I found him in the street with that stray-cat-look. Definitely! There's even a bit of blood on his cheek for the let-me-wipe-it factor.

Rufus sure has enacted that eerily cool- to- scary- raging outburst thing in many a movie. He does it to such perfection I am sure writers/directors make a point of including such scenes when they can! (Especially with his villians) That's the catch with perfection--people just want to see more of it. ;D He sure is the master of emotional scenes, my favorite thing being that he does them in such a natural way--he doesn't overdo it, or make them too precious or fakey.
As for James Franco--I know I've both lamented and defended his Tristan (on this board?) before. True, he may not have not acted with life in all his scenes, but I thought he did have some pretty great moments. Favorites were when he was playing the young arrogant buck trying to impress and be the champion for king (example: loved the boasting, and cocky grin with his arms folded accross his chest in one scene in particular) I most especially appreciated scenes when he was suffering from lovesickness and denying himself to Isolde (& vice versa) I bought it--felt he physically looked and acted like his heart was breaking. Well, age and experience has done good things for his acting and his appeal in my opinion. Thought he played a really funny stoner in a couple movies and he has been getting rave reviews for his portrayal of the adventurer who has to make some brave/hard choices to survive in the movie 27 hours. Like Rufus he is looking more handsome as the years go by--saw a movie still from the upcoming "Your Highness" and he looked rather hunky. I wouldn't mind seeing James and Rufus in the same project again, I thought they worked well together. (Who knows, maybe like in tennis (you improve as you go against your betters) "playing" w/Roof in T & I upped his game, just a bit? Not to mention all the work he's done since)

Those are really nice screen caps of young Marke, Kate. Thanks for sharing them. I'm a little more partial to older Marke, but that's probably my age talking. He looks pretty hot here, though. Love your screencaps of young Marke, especially this one: I'd take him home anytime if I found him in the street with that stray-cat-look. Where I come from, we'd call this a "Send This Boy to Camp" poster.

Just found quite a nice review on amazon: click. (However, I do hope Isolde would not go for the cauliflower!!)

"James shuffles from scene to scene, hunch shouldered and wearing the only expression he seems capable of the entire movie - a cross between pouty lipped petulance and abject misery" ;D ;D

Some essayist at Time Magazine actually named James Franco the coolest person of the year ... eeeeeeek! Did that guy ever hear of somebody called Rufus Sewell?

Maybe he's heard of Rufus, but he obviously doesn't know or appreciate him like we do. ;D It doesn't help that most people who read or write for the Times have not seen POTE (you'd not only have to have cable, but the STARZ network too) or Zen (Why does PBS make us wait soooo long?) so the essayist has most likely not seen Rufus in his most recent, wonderful roles. Besides, Rufus gets my vote for one of the coolest dudes EVER.
As for James, I've read he gave an amazing performance in 27 hours. I will see it...eventually...on video.

If it makes you feel any better, Joel Stein is one of Time's "humorists". His subsequent column was a prediction for 2011 called "The Year of Pimento Cheese" ;D I'm sorry, Ruflvr, I know you like JF. Besides T&I and the Spiderman films, I've only seen him in snippets of other films when I've passed by on tv. Maybe it's not fair to judge his abilities on such limited exposure, but I thought he was terribly miscast in T&I. Everyone else in the cast was living in the 1200s and he was an overgrown adolescent living in the 2000s, and it weakened an otherwise good film. I'll try not to beat up on him any more though. For a while.

But still, the very thought ... eeek ... (Maybe I'm just a little bit biased because he's so not my type as a man.)

Watched Tristan and Isolde last night for the first time. Thought it was a beautiful film, loved the haunting Irish music. The authenticity and the attention to detail as in the costumes and the weapons etc was as good as they could get it. The acting was excellent especially by the three main players. As always Rufus excelled as Lord Marke. Thank you for the screencaps Kate. He is so gorgeous to look at. I loved him as I know you all did in every part of the film. He is just the best actor ! I think us girl fans of Rufus are understandably biased as James Franco and Sophia Myles gave excellent performances as the doomed lovers but I agree why would any woman want to run off with Tristan when she was married to Lord Marke. Just doesn't make sense. Rufus' performance was as ever brilliant. At the end when he finds he has been betrayed the emotion is all there in his eyes and the shouting scene I agree he does that to perfection. It was nice to hear the comments of the writer when he found out they had secured Rufus Sewell to play Lord Marke. He had previously admired Rufus' work and felt he was the one to play Lord Marke and he felt Rufus did an excellent job. To cap it, given that the film was made on a tight budget it is excellent and I will watch in many more times.

I will refrain from reading too much of this thread until I have seen it, which I could actually do tonight as it is on on one of our swiss/italian channels tonight and it's even broadcast in the two audio channel version. So I can actually switch from the italian dubbing to the english version. But it starts at 10.50 pm which is a bit late Guess I will have to record it. We'll see. DVD is on the way and I should get it next week. But still it is very nice to have one of Rufus' films on the telly program. Kate - thank you for the screencaps - he looks so beautiful as young Marke PS: in my TV magazine they wrote underneath a picture of Marke and Isolde the names James Franco and Sophia Myles

Do record it, Zenina (and go for the English version!) - you can always re-watch it as soon as the DVD arrives PS: in my TV magazine they wrote underneath a picture of Marke and Isolde the names James Franco and Sophia Myles Ouch! That's so stupid that it hurts
