The Sea

I got this in the mail yesterday and read it within a few hours. I quite liked it. Kinda reminded me of my family. I spent a lot of time at the beach, as I lived near it growing up, with a pretty eccentric family of my own. My older sister told me I was mute the whole time she lived at home - till I was in the 7th grade when people discovered I had a personality. Mealtime was very interesting at our house - just a lot going on. I really never knew what the word bored meant - couldn't have asked for a more interesting family to observe.

Anyway, I thought he really brought everything and everyone to life - even the smells. I was quite fascinated - not bored at all. And didn't even find it depressing. Felt like I knew everyone. The whole class thing was interesting - kids are as aware of that as adults, unfortunately. I liked how the kids were portrayed as being very smart and deliberate. I look foward to seeing who they pick for those parts. In fact I really want to see this movie made now. I can totally see Rufus playing the dad. And the dynamics of him with the others will be so fascinating to see - a truly complex part for him to sink his teeth into. And C. Rampling must play Miss V. I like her. Isn't she in Restless too? Oh, yeah, lest I forget, Rufus should have very nice casual clothes for this part.

Now have ordered Restless.

About half way through this. We also spend time at a beach house every summer. Rufus does not fit the description of Carlo but I think he can do alot with this role. Will let you know more later. Not my usual murder mystery.

Oh, that's too bad. I just saw her in Wrath of the Titans last night. I hadn't seen her in many things, and certainly not as such a strong female character. I think she would've been great opposite Rufus! ;D

Possible book spoilers.......




Finished the book yesterday. Will not give away to much. Thought it was well written. Thought it was a little depressing in parts. Think we can all relate to thinking back to events of our childhood.

Will be interesting to see how Rufus will portray Carlo. He is not made out to be the most attractive of characters. Wonder if he will have a beard?? All the characters were interesting. Some surprises at the end of the book that I did not see coming.

Positive thing is Rufus will probably be wearing shorts most of the time!

In today's Daily Mail in the 'Look out for@ column by Baz Bamigboye:
'Ciaran Hinds, who will star in the film version of John Bannville's award-winning novel The Sea, about a retired art historian who revisits his past. It's expected to start filming at locations in Cork soon and will also star Sinead Cusack, Charlotte Rampling, Natascha McElhone and Rufus Sewell. The movie has been in development for several years, but Hinds and Sewell have always stuck by it.'
