Rai, I also liked Cabal better than Vendetta when I read the books. I cannot wait to get to see the series. I loved the coolness and corruption remarks.
What's a little corruption without any coolness.

I was quite concerned about the health of several of my female colleagues this week. After all, there is a lot of flu about. They complained of raised temperatures, a racing pulse, hot flushes and palpitations. It turned out not to be a bug but the appearance of one Mr Rufus Sewell on their television screens. Outbreak Alert! Seems like there's a Rufusitis epidemic out there! Lovely review! I haven't been at Twitter since Sunday night, but I agree with all of you: if you don't like the first episode of a show, don't watch the second just to make snide remarks. (And rueful, you may be right that those are the very people who can't focus on some more complicated plot for more than a few minutes and then blame the plot and not themselves.) tipou, have fun!! anyother, ah yes, now I remember that "just came back from the gym" line. Another fine example of Rufus/Aurelio humour (Reminded me of a short article in a German glossy magazine in which he said he'd never be able to drag himself out of bed early to go jogging.)

I could be wrong, but didn't Tania say that the reason she had lunch with Ed Stoppard was to throw the office off the scent of her relationsip with Zen?

I could be wrong, but didn't Tania say that the reason she had lunch with Ed Stoppard was to throw the office off the scent of her relationsip with Zen? Jo, that's what she told Aurelio. A very convenient story if you ask me. Then flattering him by saying there was a book on him and lots of the women in the office thought he was very handsome. And she still managed to ask Ed/Fabri to get her an apartment as well. Surely if he'd turned out to be the one who got it for her he would have been expecting something in return. That Tania seems a little to keen to use her feminine charms to get things for herself, and unfortunately Aurelio seems oblivious to it so far. I didn't like his desperation to get that apartment for her "I need an apartment and i need it now!!" Especially telling him in the cafe that she wanted to have sex with him before saying she wanted an apartment. Just to make sure he understood the payoff if he got her one!!

Loved Cabel! I thought it was much better than Vendetta, as a mystery. I was surprised that some thought it unclear - The Cabel is real. As shown in the scene where Amadeo is taking to the Cardinal. They were following Umberto and most likely planned to kill him. At the same time, Umberto had decided to commit suicide. Thus the suicide note was genuine. He was interrupted by his lover, who in the course of an argument, pushed his over the bridge. Sort of assisted suicide? The authorties wanted the case called a suicide, the prosecutor wanted it to be a murder. Zen was able to make the authorities happy by finally producing the suicide note, which he pretended to fabricate. Thus putting the minister once again in his debt, even though Zen didn't do anything underhanded or unethical. Okay, so it was the note bit that we got wrong. We thought it was fake and he was murdered ! Hence our confusion I'm going to be honest people, after that episode as mr am said to me 'If Rufus wasn't in this, you wouldn't be watching it would you?' No. I wouldn't. I loved Vendetta and other than Roof's performance didn't like Cabal at all. As Zen is only three episodes long, I might have watched episode three anyway, as I did with Sherlock. I loved episode 1 of Sherlock, wondered what had gone wrong with episode 2 and thoroughly enjoyed episode 3 and now can't wait for the next series. So I am hoping I will enjoy next week's episode of Zen.

I'm going to be honest people, after that episode as mr am said to me 'If Rufus wasn't in this, you wouldn't be watching it would you?' No. I wouldn't. I loved Vendetta and other than Roof's performance didn't like Cabal at all. As Zen is only three episodes long, I might have watched episode three anyway, as I did with Sherlock. No problems with being honest! After all, many of us have expressed our dislike of some of the projects Rufus has undertaken, even though we've admired his performance in them. But I would definitely be watching Zen even without Rufus. I enjoyed all of the Dibdin books and the adaptations are very good. Like someone said earlier in this thread - I'm amazed at what they cut out while still remaining true to the books. I thought Cabal was much better than Vendetta, as a mystery, because in Vendetta, they cut so much of the Lucia's character backstory out, you never understood why she murdered all of those people. Instead, they just had a throw-away line, "oh, she's crazy" and left it at that. They expected the viewers to connect WAY to many dots. But even with that, I enjoyed Vendetta a lot, thought it was very well done. As to the suicide note: Adrianna admits to Zen that she found the note in her apartment after she and Umberto had spent the night drinking and he had been talking about killing himself. She was the one who put the note in Umberto's apartment where Zen found it. At the end, Zen's partner Georgio tells Zen that his brother in law in forensics matched the handwriting and the ink to what was in Umberto's calendar. Zen was only pretending to the minister's aide that he was faking a note in order to gain some leverage with the man. Technically, Umberto was murdered. His lover pushed him off the bridge in a fit of anger before he could throw himself off. Which is why Zen is ok with saying that it's suicide. He says, "as far as I'm concerned, justice has been served" since the lover has killed himself. I'm really starting to dislike Tania. She seems not only manipulative but a little more naive than would be realistic. I mean, she knows about the bet, has to know about Fabri's reputation as a womanizer (she says herself that it's hard to keep a secret in their department). Then she's all "oh, you don't trust me" when Zen is upset that she's using Fabri to get an apartment. I'm with numbat on this one - Tania has to know that Fabri will expect some kind of quid pro quo for getting her an apartment. Spoiler for the books: In the books this is one of the issues that breaks up their relationship. Tania keeps the success of her business from Zen. He becomes suspicious of her activities. She gets pissed. She never acknowledges his point of view, that if everything is innocent, why would she keep things from him.

I loved Vendetta and other than Roof's performance didn't like Cabal at all. As Zen is only three episodes long, I might have watched episode three anyway, as I did with Sherlock. Anniem, although I did like Cabal a lot, I had the same experience you did with Sherlock. I didn't hate The Blind Banker, but it didn't live up to the expectations set by A Study in Pink. So I understand your disappointment and I also hope that you'll like the third episode of Zen. I hope the third episode will have enough of an appreciative audience that the BBC will commission a second series. But I would definitely be watching Zen even without Rufus. I enjoyed all of the Dibdin books and the adaptations are very good. Ditto. I really liked the books and the Zen character of the books (who is somewhat different from Rufus's Zen), but I think the films stand up very well on their own too (with the caveat about the Lucia backstory in Vendetta you mentioned).

And i cannot wait to see what happens with he and Tania next week. They will have clearly been sleeping together by then (fanfiction did you say anyother? - i'm trying to resist it, but it's not easy!!!!) You know what Numbat, you don't have to give in just yet. However, after the third Zen some fanfiction might just get us through the Zen-less abyss that's ahead of us. Not that I'd ever put any pressure on you, ofcourse. ;D

I can only say I love Vendetta and I love Cabal and most I love Aurelio´s bed. And one question to Dreamer, in Italy is coffee drinking such a way that makes Aurelio? I think the fact that he throws into him all cup of coffee as Czech doing it with a glass of plum brandy. ;D
