Watched this for the first time last night. Not way up there on my list of favourites...but that could be because Rufus wasn't in it enough for my liking! Bit of a dodgy accent from him, but he did look rather good (especially, I have to say, in that orange shirt. I'm so used to seeing him in dark colours, but that orange/ochre really suited him). I liked the idea of him being a man with no ties, in charge of his own destiny at a time when elsewhere in the world so many people were having theirs decided for them.....but he clearly had a mysterious past which was never explored. In the scene when Evelyn had gone to his hut, she was looking around and spotted amongst his belongings a photo of a woman, and I'd hoped we'd find out the reasons he'd decided to make his living from the islands...but no. The dancing scene was lovely, the way she gradually allowed their bodies to become closer as they danced, and how tenderly he was holding her. And I'm not going to comment on the undressing scene, and where he put his face, except to say...me next, please!!! Oh, and I do love a bittersweet ending! GE2

Be patient with this one, GE2. I didn't much care for it on the first viewing but it has so many nice Rufus moments.
The dance is lovely but one of my favorite moments in the film is when he hears the planes. Consider there was probably nothing in that scene but someone saying, "plane noises" or something to that effect. One of the first things I noticed about Rufus was the way he searched for things or noticed things. It's as if he's never had any idea about it before--never read it in a script until the very moment when he discovers it must be found.
The scene in the hut in the rain is a very nice scene as well. It's filled with the sweetness and tenderness that is one of Rufus' specialties. The way he carefully examines the blisters on her hand and blows on them... the attention to detail is one of my favorite things about his work.
I'm also quite fond of the entire "cage" sequence and the "egg" scene following. It's interesting to me that once she returns to herself his first thought it to bring her something to cover herself. Is is for her or is it for him? As I'm sure you can imagine, I have my own opinion.
Agreed about the pumpkin coloured shirt. It's wonderful on him. He looks great in brown and green as well. Shame he doesn't wear them more often.

What I most enjoyed about the egg scene was the look of delighted happiness on Mick's face when he sees her looking almost normal again. Suddenly its not OK to see her unclothed any more. My favorite part was when they were trying to get her shirt off her hands in the big romance scene. I can't believe it went as planned & I loved hearing Rufus . I think they just decided to leave the struggle in the movie anyway. Anyone know? As you could tell from my last avatar I also loved the clam shell scene. I thought it was very erotic, but not I think for the obvious reason. I'm really just not sure why. Oh come on then I might as well fess up cause If he blew his nose I'd probably manage to find something erotic or endearing about it!!!

Inspired by this thread, I watched this yesterday morning (wheee MLK day!!). I hadn't watched anything Rufus since The Holiday came out and oh my, my cup runneth over with love. I fear that when Rufus is 80 and will get a BAFTA lifetime achievement award, I'll still be squeeing like an idiot...

Some Roof trivia bits-
On my second time over to see Macbeth (1999) I had a nice visit with him at the pub behind the theatre, The Rat and Parrot. Yasmin (his wife at the time) was there and she told me that they had both been to a screening of IASL that morning and liked it very much.
As you noticed in my photos, Uke, he was wearing an IASL T-shirt when we visited in his dressing room during his last week of RnR.

Here's a question:
The pearl that Mick pays for with a harmonica at the beginning of the picture--is this the same pearl he calls 'teardrop from the moon' and bargains with Evelyn for later?

No dont think so. Of course he could be pulling a swiftie by saying that it was "beroke" (broken) when he bargained with the boy. More likely they were the seed pearls he showed her first. The boys would have been pretty canny too, they would know a good pearl when they saw one and would be good at bargaining with him.

I saw this movie long time ago. But because of Rufus, I recently bought the dvd to refresh my memory and see how I could possible missed him back then. The story was bit tragic but he simply looked gorgeous in it. I enjoyed the movie, not my fav but cant' go wrong with bits of him scattered all over the movie.
