Hahahaha, reminds me of a very long conversation we had on this very subject rueful - of course to me it's still a singlet!!!

Well, Aurelio surely doesn't want to be the fun to be over in one sitting ... first we get the suit, then the T-shirt, then that underwear thingy whatever it's called ;D ... maybe we'll be allowed to see all of him in the eleventh instalment?

Hahaha, ok so let's have the singlet/vest/tank/wife beater conversation here!!! Now this is what rueful and i were trying to nut out, because in one of my EH stories i had Jacob on the beach in a singlet and boardies. The issue arose because to rueful it was an underwear garment, but to me it's a type of sleeveless t-shirt. So we decided it's a hot climate v cold climate type of thing because we don't wear them as underwear, but we do wear them as outerwear!!! But then there's the fact that an underwear "vest" is not the same as an outerwear "singlet". They look different - a singlet usually has larger armholes, is made from the same fabric as a normal t-shirt, and often has a logo on the front. Whereas an underwear vest is more fitted, usually made from a stretchier cotton and is plain - and usually white. Which is where i would still question what it is that Aurelio is wearing. Is it a brown vest that he was wearing under his shirt? Or is it a sleeveless sleepshirt (which is neither a vest nor a singlet - it's pyjamas!!!!!) Or perhaps it's an italian thing with a completely different name. Oh and only little girls and members of the Village People would wear somethiing called a tank top!!! But whatever it's called, he looks mighty fine in it!!! ;D Added: Just to complicate matters, Google images says this is a vest: And this is a singlet: So i'm hoping to see Zen in a singlet very, very soon!!! ;D

LOL! I do not want to turn this into an unpleasant topic, but in my parts the undershirt version, when I was growing up, was commonly known by an ethnic slur, referring to Italians. Those kinds of terms aren't nice, and I take it as a sign of great progress that it's now called a "wife beater." That way, we are offending people of all ethnic and racial backgrounds equally. The problem is, we haven't really come up with a polite-company alternative. As for "tank top," you're right, that tends to be used for girls, for a guy, we would just say "tank," which of course sounds as macho as the military vehicle. Here is what Wikipedia has to say on the subject: A sleeveless shirt, singlet or vest, also known as a tank top, is a shirt manufactured without sleeves, or one where the sleeves have been cut off. Sleeveless shirts can be worn by either gender, depending on the style. Tank tops are often worn by athletes in sports such as track and field and bicycling. Tank tops have been popular warm-weather casual wear in the United States since the 1970s (citation needed), and are regarded as acceptable public casual dress in most warm weather locales. They are mostly preferred in hot climates, since the arm holes provide ventilation and the thin fabric provides comfort.
In American English, a tank top is a sleeveless garment that can be worn by either gender (hetro). It is often worn under the shirt as underwear, although more colorful and well-designed tank tops are usually worn as an outer shirt. The term is also used in Australian English, although the term singlet is usually used to refer to the garment, which likewise is a less common term used in the United States, usually reserved for athletic shirts. In British English, the term vest is used, while tank top refers to a sleeveless pullover. The name tank top, recorded in English since 1968, is derived from its resemblance to a tank suit, a style of one-piece women's swimsuit with shoulder straps. Its name derives from the 1920s term swimming tank, which is an obsolete term for what is now called a swimming pool. The tankini – a portmanteau of the words tank top and bikini – is a women's swimming version of the tank top.I hope you appreciate that I have posted a photo that will not feed into our overheated imaginations. ;D
