I have always like Dangerous Beauty (in spite of the silly name change!) as a light romance. It is very loosely based on the life of Veronica Franco and I think it could have been much more interesting if they had concentrated on the history and less on the fluffy romantic story. I'm not sure how much of a romantic attachment the two really had, but they sure gave it the Hollywood treatment, didn't they?

If anyone's interested, 'Dangerous Beauty' is going to be available on R2 DVD from 18th June 2007, although curiously it's being released as 'A Destiny of Her Own', which rather sounds like a particularly piss-poor Barbara Cartland 'novel'. www.play.com are accepting pre-orders at £7.99 and www.hmv.co.uk at £6.99, both with free postage.

Well, its still a better title than 'Dangerous Beauty'. At least it has something to do with the plot. It definitely would've been a better title for the movie in the US.

Yeah, I never understood what the purpose of changing the name to DB was..........it didn't fit the story/film at all! I've seen "A Destiny of Her Own" listed as one of the titles for this one, but I still think "Honest Courtesan" was the best name and they should have left it alone!

I loved this Movie but I am a hopeless romantic. I left the cinema with a loved up feeling. Still I do like historical movies and when I saw that the film was based on a true story I rushed to my local library and borrowed the book "Veronica franco The Honest Cortisan, " I soon found out that Her real life was very sad, she was a very talented poet who stuggled to show her work and ended up being left to die by the people we were told loved her. I can't remember it all now but it was very grim. I felt very depressed to find that what the movie makers called a true story was very untrue. The only thing that was true were the names and places from what I could tell . (Actually would have preferred it if they hadn't told me that it was based on Veronica Franco's lfe, at least then it would have just been a lovely love story)

Yes, the real Veronica was married young and divorced, had lots of kids, her patron died or abandoned her, and she died poor in the very area where courtesans ended their life in Venice. In the movie, the area is where the Greek actress from CSI:NY (forget her name) ended up after being disfigured by a lover. I think the character that Rufus plays was only a poet that Veronica included in her poetry book, there is no mention of him being her lover or anything important.
I agree, they should say it's "based on", not a "true story". Filmmakers ALWAYS butcher books, anyway.

I watched this for the 2nd time ..what I remembered from the 1st time was a rather lovely romantic film with Mr Sewell at his most beautiful. What I saw this time made me think I had changed my glasses and that my hormones were raging because I saw only him. Dark curls ..beautiful green eyes ..lovely body...sensual mouth ..God, I'm off again. In fact I am surprised that my tv is still in one piece from my efforts to get in there with him. Isn't Catherine McCormack the one one who demanded a body double for the love scene ? IS THIS WOMAN INSANE ? My complaint about the love scene is that it wasn't long enough. I had my usual choccie and a nice big glass of Chenin Blanc ready. At the end of this film, choc was still unwrapped and wine glass still full ,which must tell you something M(o)B came home and went to bed without me noticing and he was lucky (or unlucky perhaps ) to be asleep when I joined him. This fim like Nick Siver should have a Government Danger Warning. A little while ago I read on the board a thread called "Oops and giggles" which I haven't been able find since . In this GE2 and some of the girls made certain allegations about a certain... hum...thing in the love scene . May I say , after several replays , I am in complete agreement with you. Look for youselves !!!!

I happened to like this film a lot and found it very entertaining. All historical inaccuracies aside, I was glad that I purchased it and I will definitely watch it again. After all, I didn't buy it for it's educational value...I bought it for Rrrufus!
