HELP! I'm finding it so hard to not watch one of my new Rufus DVD's before tonight. I've got things I want to do today, so I don't want to be watching a DVD for nearly 2 hours or longer. Well, I do, but I don't as well!! This weekend is going to be torture during the day. Anyway . . . I finished watching Charles II last night and loved it. Well acted, well put together a very good drama. Um . . . Rufus bald not a pretty sight. He looked good in his wigs and the wig that was not meant to be a wig. I thought Helen McCrory was superb in it. I didn't like her character, but she did such a wonderful acting job.

Ha, I remember when I first discovered Rufus. I went to the library and came back with a stack of DVD's. I once watched Charles II in one marathon-sitting. Got to love that first stage

charles II was such a revelation to me. superb all the way - and such a pleasantly illustrated history lesson as well.
i agree, mccrory was top notch - but isnt she always? i remember rotfl'ing at her curtsey for elizabeth in "the queen", and that was a tiny role as tony blair's wife. she was just hilarious, a true anthology scene, she is so expressive even without saying a word. in charles II she was so intense, vulnerably without make up, unafraid to lash out every emotion, yet totally in control of her acting gift - a true actor if ever there was one.
but then again, there was not one bad apple in the cast. all great. with the most regal rufus ever topping the whole acting delight from beginning to end.
and i did not even mention his yummy tummy. oh... i just did.

Not a problem! I'm always eager to help a fellow Rufus fan get her Rufus-fix! Posting that pic made me want to see TOTS again (for the 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 time! I'm on my own this afternoon for a while so it was a good time to see it again!)

Ok, this thread needs to be renewed, I feel. Yesterday I finally saw the full 4 hour version. Incredible, how much is missing in the American version (which I hastily had bought at first, not knowing, what I missed). Most of all: one truly... ahem, breathtaking sex scene which the Americans have cut out But not only this. Many key scenes which help understanding all the intrigues are missing. Now I finally know why I didn't understand so many things in the American version. Because they cut out ONE HOUR! That means a quarter of the film is missing!!! A shortcut of my impressions: He is being regal... all the time, even when he tenderly gives in to the crying and shouting of his women. Not as regal as Marke, I find. Marke needs less external signs for being a true King. Somehow I found it sometimes even ridiculous, all this fancy stuff he is wearing (apart from the horrible wigs). But besides this, it is really a great work. Rufus integrates all the contradictions of this king, just with one slight move of his mouth or eyes he covers the different aspects of this character. Lusty, severe, raging, amused, worried, tired. Simply wonderful the interviews with him in the "making of" part. Well and then the scenes where he is in action as a lover... ahem... Just to remember all of you how terribly sexy he is in this movie... a tongue pic... hope you love it! The rest is to your imagination Censored pic of Charlie's tongue

Oooh! That tongue picture. I can hardly wait until my BBC/Region 2 copy of Charles II arrives! I finally ordered one direct from Amazon.co.uk. I'll have to watch it sitting at my computer since the DVD player attached to my TV is too new and won't let me mess with the region coding. I don't care, though. Anything that will let me see ALL of the program will be worth it!

Bluehorse, it was this that first brought Rufus to my attention, so it holds a special place in my heart - it will always be my favourite role of his. I find, even now when watching it, that sometimes I forget he's acting - he just IS Charles II, he so inhabits the role. He is such a subtle actor that, as you say, the slightest movement conveys so much - most especially in the scene where he is watching the sleeping Lady Frances when Lady Castlemaine is trying to entice him to seduce her. The look of doubt, then desire, then doubt again that flits across his face in a matter of moments says more than any dialogue could have managed. For me, this was Rufus's perfect role, allowing so many of his strengths as an actor to be showcased. And as for that first photo.......

GE2... I really feel honored that you appreciate this one... Yes. As I already said, he's absolutely BEING this role. In every slight move of him. Eyes, mouth, eyebrows, hands, his steps, not talking about the move of his... well.... hips? Probably the first time he really got a role that merits him? I am honestly happy that I could give you some ... ahem... really inspiring pic Love you all! Bluehorse and to jemmina: honestly I don't know what's on youtube... I myself made the mistake to first buy the American version. So be aware... DO NOT BUY THIS ONE! Only if it is 228 minutes... then it's the REAL one
