and if the excellent mr. fry says we should listen to books on the treadmill, i will get my step machine out and do it. not only would i join a stephen fry cult if ever i was asked, but it also sounds like a sensible idea.

Yes, it is really terrific. And it also downloads nicely to mp3 players like the one you just purchased, tip. (Although I listened to it in its entirety already before joining the Fry cult, now that I think of it, Dr Syn would be a good follow-up to joseph andrews in my quest to get in shape.)
Mr Fry specifically raved about listening to Rufus reading the Bond books as he walked (probably in actual natural settings, but that's not my style), and said he'd lost a lot of weight in the process.

weight loss probably obtained by steaming over the fact that rufus is straight, more than the walking process.

Ha! Poor fellow.
I finished JA today. I really liked the story a lot, not just the narrator, but the humor and the characters. I might have mentioned it before, but the chapter titles, with their long and ironic explanations, crack me up.

rueful, thanks for convincing me to try JA. i have gone through about 12 chapters now. i'm commuting with rufus, makes a car ride so much more pleasant. other drivers might think that i smile a lot. this story is fun.

I'm so glad you're enjoying it. I thought it was a funny story that I would have enjoyed even if I read it myself. But Rufus's reading helped me immensely by keeping me on the treadmill for much longer than I would normally be, since I only allowed myself to listen while I walked.
I'm still waiting for my In a Savage Land though! Perhaps they're printing me a special copy that will have a personal message from Rufus, and that's why it's taking so long.

Dr. Syn is fun, it's an old fashioned book, pirates, thieves, wronged love. And it's funny, Ruf can trace hs lineage to a highwayman who was banished from Australia because he robbed a stage coach. You can check out some amazing archival interviews with him on Vue2Sewell.com.
Great photos too and many, many interviews. I'm enjoying JA as well. He sounds like he had a good time recording it too!

So I purchased Joseph Andrews from Silksound. It gives two download options -- Audiobook format or mp3 format. Does anyone know the difference? Are you allowed to do both?
