If you look at Ginny's recent Roof pics, you can see that he is wearing an In A Savage Land t-shirt. This reminded the lovely Rai of the photo Rufus sent her when he was filming that movie. Quoting Rai: "He took it himself (of course) - it was right as the film was wrapping. He said it was the shortest his hair had ever been." The file name of this photo is appropriately "ME". Thanks for sharing, Rai!!

[random]You know, in that scene when you see him from behind, it looks like he is taking a drag from a cigarette but when he tuns around, no cigarette (or stub). Stupid and minute but that always gets me.[/random]

I've never actually noticed because I rarely watch that picture beyond the bit where he puts them on the boat and goes back. That's kind of the defining moment for me. Everything that needs to be said has been said by that point.
Everything else is... unnecessary overkill.

It is just the right amount of schmaltz to wrench my sentimental heart.

I love the railway station scene!! It is just the right amount of schmaltz to wrench my sentimental heart. I've heard it said Americans don't ever respond favorably to a film without a happy ending. I guess I'm not a good American because I'll take the bittersweet one every time. For me it tugs at the heartstrings like nothing else. I like the idea of not knowing what became of Mick and Evelyn. I like the idea of pondering what might have happened to them. It's the certainty that leaves me cold. And often with these things I think they make the ending trite and a cliche. YMMV and probably does.

"So young, so carniverous" , Rai! I remember that pic - from 1998 perhaps? I had just discovered Rufus and you shared it with our very small informal Rufus group. Since we're going down memory lane, the second time I went over to Macbeth (June, 1999) and after we had exchanged a couple of emails, Rufus invited me to the "Rat and Parrot" across the lane behind the theatre stage door for a drink. Yasmin was there and they had been to a screening of In A Savage Land that morning. They were both excited and pleased with results. My Aussie friend tells me that t shirt is from an Australian film festival of a couple of years ago - so he probably doesn't save his t shirts for 8 years! :-) I liked the film very much but thought the editing was a bit dodgy. I love a bittersweet ending, even though I'm a Yank. The Woodlanders brings me to tears every time I see it. Ginny x

"So young, so carniverous" um, what a lovely quote. Casablanca, Gone with the Wind-- all the best old films had bittersweet endings back in the days when Hollyweird understood that you should never ever give people what they want or they won't come back for more...

Thanks for sharing that "self-photo"!
There are times when I want the cliched happy ending and there are times when I want something unexpected, just depends on my mood at the time!

"So young, so carniverous" Alfie Byrne to Robbie Fey in "A Man Of No Importance" (the lunch scene) one of my all time favorite Rufus films.
Albert Finney was wonderful, and was Rufus. He played Robbie with such gentleness and sensitivity.

That movie is the reason I'm on this board today. re: IASL, I don't think losing a leg in the war is exactly a happy ending, I thought it was sad! And hear hear again on Giles, Ginny, that one is just a big sobfest. In a good way.

I confess right up front it completely eludes me so I'm very interested to hear what everyone has to say. I'm going to try to refrain from commenting at first because I don't want to bias the discussion. I just want to listen. So please someone jump in and start talking.

Thanks for putting "Me" up, Uke. Yes, Ginny it is from September 17, 1998, to be exact! So old I have it on a floppy disk. To put more background on the photo, he had just come back from filming in the Trobriand Islands (we all remember the tsunami that hit while they were there!) and they were now finishing up in Adelaide. The photo was taken with his new digital camera (a new concept at that point in time) and it is "Mick(me) after the War..shortest hair I've ever had".
I too love the carnivorous quote. AMONI is one of my faves.
