The review here isn't favourable in the least, but I still liked this passage: It also dawns on you after a while that the villainous vampires of this tale (led by a well-cast Rufus Sewell) are much more fun to be around than the staid Mr Lincoln and his goody-two-shoes posse. And I couldn't help laughing about the conclusion, even if it's a bit mean: It bites, it sucks, and it just won't die. ;D

Thanks Kate. I like what you have highlighted. And I did laugh at the conclusion.

Just found another review which is critical of some aspectsbut also finds some good in the movie. Loved the conclusion: But it's still more fun than having vampires as moody teenagers. ;D

'suave gentleman' - absolutely! It annoys me that they all mention the absurdity of Abe Lincoln being a vampire hunter, like it's more absurd than any other vampire film. Just go with it and enjoy it!

I know this is a review thread, but you need a special warning now: DANGER! DANGER! The next babbling will be full of SPOILERS and extremely BIASED remarks. I watched the movie yesterday! In a dark cinema!! In 3D!!! And I enjoyed it soooooo much. It made my hair stand on end - I even jumped a little in my big comfy chair some times and yes, I uttered some -like sounds as well. When I watched Dark City (on my not too big TV), the horror started from my stomach. That film pulled me into a total dread. Not only beacuse the strangers were creepy, but because the story had a whirlpool effect on me. ALVH was like those big children's books: each page has a beautiful picture with some lines and every turn opens a new world of wonder. Your fantasy can go a lot of directions. I enjoyed the scenes for their own beauty, aww, even the nasty things were amazing, and the action scenes were a delight for the senses. I'm not a trained audience, I couldn't compare, I just welcomed every scary, vicious or other thing with wide-open eyes. Rufus is able to do something unbelievable - when I see him in anything new, he always, ALWAYS, makes me surprised how gorgeous he is. I've been a loyal fangirl for a long time, I know how he looks, I know what he has done before, but still... Adam was fantastic!!! Yes, his famous line was cut from the ball scene, but I didn't know what he would do with that chair and, ah, he had his style of dealmaking, indeed! I almost jumped out of my skin. And angry Adam is ANGRY - oh, his face in the train scene while he was searching for the silver, well, I'm glad that 3D thing is only virtual or I would have crumbled into a pile of dust. Kicking down the bridge supports was a simple parallel to Lincoln's felling that tree - Adam's rage had no limit. ! When Sturges was trying to kill him and Adam was just looking at him without a word, hah, what a rich facial expression! (I'm not very coherent, am I? Sorry.) I loved the wildness of this movie and I loved its dark dark dark nature.

That is a good firsthand review, Adina! I went to see ALVH a couple of days ago with my 16 year old son. I have to admit that I didn't have high hopes beforehand, bit too much action in the trailer for me, and I'm not used to 3D films and no into American history. But I liked it. A lot.
*possible spoilers*
Love your children's book reference, Adina - it was beautifully made indeed. I wonder why the trailer was so packed with action, because there were plenty of other good scenes. Poor Dominic Cooper - those fangs must hurt. Rufus as Adam was perfect - I would have liked some more Adam scenes though, but he had a fair share, and was a true alternative "president". One small point of criticism: I understand the vampires have to be horrid creatures, but was all that saliva necessary? Fangs in itself are creepy enough.
Bravo Linkin Park for the title song.
This was the first time in ages my son wanted to see a movie with me and enjoyed it on top of that. Thank you, Rufus!

Hoping to see this again for the 5th time tonight at our local economy theater. Usually gets here just before it goes to DVD. Saw it for the 4th time a couple weeks ago with 4 of my daughters who really liked it, too, but we didn't have much time to talk about it, though, because right after it we were thrown into a huge family emergency.
One of the daughter's boyfriends lost our other daughter's Pomeranian - Balto - who they were sitting at their house (not where he lived) while she had gone camping wih friends. This led to a wild Mad Mad Mad World kind of chase all over town for a couple days. With my 17yr. old daughter chasing him at one point a full 2 miles on foot along and crossing 2 sets of 4 lanes of traffic after a Craig's List spotting (put it in Pets not just Lost and Found). We thought we lost her, too, during that, and it was nearly dark. Purposely drove the wrong way through a round-a-bout to get to her when she finally called from a scary truck stop just off the freeway where I found out later a trucker was trying to pick her up (help her look). Crazy dog finally, after that, came to the house he was being sat at - where we were all gathered outside (stratigizing some more) and where he ran off from. After 2 days of searching and handing out flyers, offering rewards, checking vets, calling under overpasses along railroad tracks, getting ticks, he finally surrendered to the same girl he made chase him 2 miles - after he let everyone chase him around the house he came back one more time and let her catch him. He knew where we were the whole time the little rascal. Boy, was he happy to get in his kennel again. Our most excellant adventure.
So, hoping to see it again tonight without incident.

Great review, Adina! Loved your descriptions of both the movie and your reactions to it. Thanks for sharing!
Anyother, that's quite a victory, to find a movie both you and your son can enjoy! Congrats! ;D I agree with you about saliva; there's never a good reason to show that, or any bodily fluids if you ask me!
Wills, I'm glad your dog is safe and well! Enjoy the movie (again)!

I'm sorry to say that it looks like ALHV will flop in Germany. There's absolutely no advertising, and only few cinemas will show it. Due to the age restriction (16 years) it's mostly just in evening and night programs listed. And the comment on a big newspaper was: just another vampire film to fill in the gap between the twilight films. (That was last week - I thought, today there could be more written about it - nothing!)

My local newspaper didn't mention it at all (I had expected them to include it in their weekly cinema preview) It is on at our multiplex, though. I guess I should go see it quickly. A friend from another forum saw it recently and said she immediately thought of me when Rufus appeared on-screen. She wasn't too enthusiastic about the movie as a whole but rather taken with Rufus-the-chief-vampire-baddie

Well, the critics in the papers aren't good. In one monthly paper stood, the movie is confuse, unrealistic, BUT especially Rufus Sewell as Adam is a great appearance in the picture! And if you like the movie "Van Helsing" so you will like ALVH, too ... 2.5 of 5 .... I have watched the movie yesterday again, because my hubby and a friend of mine wanted to see it. And both said, that they liked the movie. My hubby said, many action, but not enough vampires , some scenes were too fast for the eyes and Rufus was awesome as Adam... Original-Tone of Mr. PGG !!! The cinema was full of people. Not enthusiastic, but many of them liked the movie.

It didnt seem to do well here eighter. No mention of the dvd coming out in the tv guide or paper like they do. Hope it has a good dvd and cable run though. I was very disapointed to see/hear on amazon and net, that NO specials are on the DVD / Blu-Ray maybe. And it will be only the version for 16, not for 18 ... we will see.... Yesterday I missed so many scenes again in the movie. Had the feel the german version was shorter than the version I have seen at the preview ... it's very disapointing... I really hope, there will be new DVD come out in few years with specials ....
