Just finished watching it. (Yaaaay for Expat Shield!) Not much to add to what everyone else has said. Rufus was just perfect! I wasn't expecting such a quiet and subdued crazy person. But his portrayal was spot on. Subtle and hilarious! I'll need to watch that scene again to pick up on all of the outrageous things he said! ("sadness of the spent sperm" was one that I remember!)

We (MoB and me ) enjoyed it, beautifully presented with a myriad of classy actore and that is without mentioning the superb Mr Sewell I just wanted to hug him. And the subtley of his performance; in his voice ... when McMasters tells him he had invited them for breakfast, for example. The camera was not on him but his voice alters completely in his response "Of course, I did', then the descent into his illness again. CB's character gives the reason for not divorcing his wife. It was a matter of honour. A gentleman would not drag his wife's name through the mud. Can't wait for next week! Just one little niggle and I'm sure there will be screams of disagreement. Did anyone else think that Benedict Cumberbatch had a tiny touch of James Franco in his performance? You know, ever so slightly made of wood .

OUCH!
I think that's part of Tiejens personality and it also has a wee bit to do with him trying to control his emotions... Wasn't that scene in the fog beautiful - the way that Valentin rose up - as if out of silvery grey water - towards Christopher as he was leaning over in the pony trap. Very vivid.

Yeah, KQ. That what M(O)B said too but I am still not convinced it was acting. Yeah too, that scene was beautifully done. Like everything about PE

Frannie, I agree with KQ, Tiejens is supposed to be wooden. Remember, this is the man who is writing corrections in the margins of the Encyclopdia Britannica. What I found distracting was the color of his hair. It was so yellow!

Yes, I think he was supposed to be all buttoned-up and repressed, so that didn't bother me about Benedict's performance - what did bother me were the contortions his mouth was making. I know he had to wear "cheek plumpers" as Tietjens was meant to be heavily built, so maybe that had something to do with it? Very distracting at times. Oh, joy!! The Rev's in Ep 2!! PE is the "Pick of the Day" for next Friday in Radio Times, and at the very end of the blurb it says: "Meanwhile the cuckoo vicar is back, this time railing against brassieres." ;D Yippee!!!

Thanks Rueful. I did get to see it. Thought Rufus was hilarious. Way to short a role. I want more of him. Agree with the lady who wants an entire show about this character.
I only watched the Rufus part. Will wait to get the dvd to watch it all. A couple of questions. Why were they having breakfast there? Something about a book. And did they ever say why he was so "mad"? I didnt know if it was revealed in the show or book. You can pm me if its a spoiler. Thanks.

See my post above, Kygal! And still the tweets praising Rufus keep coming: Silvan Armenulic @goidukat
Benedict Cumberbatch is his usual self, but Rufus Sewell stole the show with his one scene! I keep rewinding to that part and laughing. Mabel Horrocks @isdancing
Rufus Sewell as bonkers vicar in Parade's End.Bet the BBC didn't do that speech in the 70ies. (No, I bet they didn't! ;D)

Not Rufus's prettiest role but acting and characterisation as usual brilliant. Can't wait to see him next week and hopefully in further episodes, but already living up to all his favourable reviews and tweets, so can't wait to see more. BC not an actor whose work I have followed and as I have not read the books can't really pass judgement at this point. I guess that any programme that runs for five hours and has as many characters as this apparently has will take a little time to set the scene so I think it's promising to be a very good series. Wish Rufus had a lot more screen time than his character obviously has but know he will make a fine job of what he has.

I thought it was great! Probably because I have read the books I didn’t feel it was complicated at all. Anyway the books are very complex in both the way they’re written and the way they narrate the story. This first episode is very faithful to the novels and even when things didn’t seem connected in this moment all should make sense in the next episodes. Believe me there weren’t anything gratuitous in it. All those crazy characters, the things Christopher said, the things he did, his way of thinking will conduce him to the hell and back but of course I will not say more… Anyway like rueful wrote “is better being challenged than treated like an idiot” and I think the format the director is taking is also based in the structure of some of the best HBO productions. After all she described Parade’s End like “Downtown Abbe meets The Wire” (She worked with David Simon in Generation Kill!). The acting was great. I think Cumberbatch and Hall are easily the best British actors of their generation. They both are very chameleonic in their acting and he in particular always seems to be someone complete different. Rufus unsurprisingly stole the show in his scene. The mad vicar is in the book but he isn’t so crude like in the series (Thanks to Sir Stoppard for this!). Sadly I’m sure his part is not so big. Actually I was surprised (and very glad) when I read in some review that he’ll back next Friday but I don’t think it’ll be more. PD: Christopher didn’t divorce Sylvia in part because his admirable but also ridicule moral code. He is waiting she ask him for the divorce but she’ll never do it because she is a Catholic. Julian Barnes wrote a great essay in The Guardian where he cited Freud and described Christopher as a masochist (“the Anglican saint”) and Sylvia as a sadist so maybe they also need each other.
