SPOILERS Well - unless our lovely Reverend will appear in flashbacks - its a sad farewell to fine breakfasts and spontaneous Latin lectures on sexual proclivities... I intend to quaff a cup of Lapsang Souchong and think about evil brassieres and Brimstone... Mrs Duchemain was such an idiot! Sad.....very sad indeed... Personally I think Mr D is/was more sane that his wife. Dotty bird!!

I think we've had all we can expect for 4 days filming. I had dared hope for a smidgen more in the 3rd episode The suddenness made me issue a small expletive .

Sorry to disagree with you KQ, but Mrs. Duchemain isn't an idiot. She is a vile, hypocritical creature. I couldn't believe the way she turned on Valentine - throwing that gossip in her face like that. The two were neighbors in the country - she should have known the gossip about Val having Christian's baby was false. Bah - but she's perfectly matched now with McMasters. He is eqaully vile, gaining his knighthood on the back of Christian's work.
The realtionship between Christian and Sylvia continues in its twisted way. I have to say, she showed a great deal of loyalty to him. I'm looking forward to the next episode.
RIP Reverend Duchemain.

Sylvia rather fancies what she can't have - so now she wants Christopher and no one else should have him according to her! Its not RC in this case - its just Sylvia. The scenes in which they both admired the print she'd surprised him with (in the last episode) hint at a possible happy relationship - one that I feel is doomed to not come about...

You'd have thought Ms Duchemin would have realised Valentine hadn't had anyones baby given that she's seen her every Friday at that McMasters gathering and talk about pot calling kettle black As for Sylvia, the little sympathy I had for her last week has evaporated. The attention seeking little madam. She's so desparate for Christopher to put a foot out of place so she can play the martyr. It appears she thinks it'll lessen her guilt if he does something wrong. I still like Christopher and I adore Reverend Duchemin bless his sole soul! I timed it this week - 11 seconds. That's all!

I don't know - I don't think Sylvia wants Christopher to put a foot wrong so she can play the martyr - more like she wants him to act like a human. He's been taking the "stiff upper lip" thing to an extreme. It's as if he doens't care what anyone (even Sylvia) thinks as long as he's ok with what he's doing, thinking, etc. Take the bank situation - HE knew the checks were good, that it was a clerical error being exploited by Sylvia's would-be lover. So he couldn't be bothered with correcting other's mis-apprehensions. Same thing with people thinking Mrs. Duchemin was his and McMaster's lover. HE knew it wasn't true, so to heck with what everyone else thought. A very trying attitude to have to live with.
And for all of his stiff upper lip-ness, he's not very big on forgiveness. Hasn't forgiven Sylvia, his father, and wouldn't have shaken hands with his brother if Valentine hadn't insisted.
On a completely different topic - they make a big deal about Michael not being Christopher's son (even though the kid is a spitting likeness). But no one seems to bat an eye at the fact that Christopher's brother doesn't look a thing like him or his father. Or is that just me?

I think Christopher's older brother was by the fathers first wife and Christopher was born by his second wife... the brother was ridiculing her just before Christophers wedding as being soft and not Yorkshire!
I suppose I was moved by the gentle interaction between then both in the second episode as they looked at the print, but Sylvia is a dreadful show off and a bit tactless. Then again, she hasn't asked for forgiveness, she seems to have enjoyed being a wild child and her feelings for Christopher seem to be sometimes contemptuous and sometimes like a crush ... I do love the fact that nothing in this production is clear or easy to identify!
Maybe if Christopher had shown some imperfections - some emotional flaws - she might have felt better about their marriage. But it seems to have been a ploy so she could continue to play the martyr as you have so thoughtfully remarked...

SPOILERS -----------------------------------------------
Decided to watch episode 3 one day later - less technical hiccups - and now what? My husband's discovered a whole new dimension of his wife ("Noooooo, he can't be dead! It's a mistake, he can't be. B****r, he's really dead, isn't he?").....ahem.
Feeling very sorry for poor Christopher. I-player made me tick a box saying I was 16+ because of adult themes, but he and Val really were unlucky. The BBC can be very Victiorian now and again.

Awww, poor Rev... (She may be playing a despicable character, but once again, Anne-Marie Duff gave a terrific performance.)
