I hadn't checked my emails either! Thanks for the heads up, Rachel! Little blurb about the movie in Entertainment weekly last week. The online version is just giving me text, so I don't know if the actual magazine has a pic or not. I'll try to look while I'm out today. It's not really a review per se, but the tone is enthusiastic, so I hope it will bring good attention to thefilm. EW is a popular mag in the US. Check Into Hotel Noir
Carla Gugino and her writer-director beau, Sebastian Gutierrez, go no-frills with their $300,000 homage to old Hollywood crime flicks.
Hollywood studios have done pretty well by Carla Gugino and Sebastian Gutierrez. She's starred in a bunch of splashy films like Spy Kids and Watchmen; he's penned scripts for genre flicks like Gothika and Snakes on a Plane. Which is what makes the offscreen couple's latest DIY project so unexpected. Hotel Noir, which Gutierrez wrote and directed, is a black-and-white riff on the hard-boiled films of the '40s and '50s — the kinds of movies where guys in fedoras spout rat-a-tat patter and the femmes are always fatale. It's the story of a detective (Rufus Sewell) who encounters a rogues' gallery of characters over the course of a day. "We wanted to make the kind of movie that studios aren't making anymore," says Gugino. "This felt like the kind of thing I'd want to see on a Saturday night but can never find." Shot in 15 days last summer at L.A.'s Biltmore Hotel with a boldfaced cast (Gugino, Malin Akerman, Rosario Dawson, and Danny DeVito) despite its tiny $300,000 budget, Hotel Noir is a love letter to a bygone era, but its business model is decidedly 21st century. Instead of trying to shop the film at festivals, Gutierrez made a deal with the VOD company In Demand (where it debuted Oct. 9). And thanks to a Kickstarter campaign, he's raised another $81,000 to fund a theatrical run in New York and L.A. But he and Gugino are most excited about the deal they made with Gathr, an Internet company that allows people anywhere in the country to request a screening of the film in their own town. "The audience now has the power to bypass critics and the official way things have always been done in a very punk-rock way," says Gutierrez. Here's looking at you, kids. m.ew.com/news-detail.rbml?guid=0,,20643774,00

Thanks a lot for the heads-up about the e-mail, ladies! I'd have missed that one because I used an e-mail address I don't check very regularly.

I don't know that we have anyone in any of these cities, but these are cities where people have requested screenings through Gathr. They'll only happen if enough people buy tickets in advance, and there is a time limit: El Paso, TX: gathr.us/screening/470 Fairfax, VA: gathr.us/screening/439 Eugene, OR: gathr.us/screening/500 Mobile, AL: gathr.us/screening/443 San Diego, CA: gathr.us/screening/503 Below are other cities where screenings were requested for next week, but it looks like they didn't sell enough advance tickets and they are not taking place. If you go to the link now, it says "not available." However, if anyone is in any of these cities, you might want to call the theater listed in the link, just to be sure. Irvine, CA: gathr.us/screening/469 Kansas City, MO: gathr.us/screening/454 Seattle, WA: gathr.us/screening/476 Buffalo, NY: gathr.us/screening/475 Pittsburgh, PA: gathr.us/screening/450 Tampa, FL: gathr.us/screening/473 Austin, TX: gathr.us/screening/452

El Paso is on the exact opposite side of the state where I'm at. It's too far away. D;

Aww, that's too bad! Maybe it will come to a city closer to you in the future (or, if you think you can get a big enough group together, you can do a gathr request for a screening yourself!).

Alas, I'm the sole Rufus fan of my friend circle, so gathering a group probably won't work out all that well. :/ I'll just hold out hope that maybe it'll come closer. (Well, technically, Austin is closer, but that's still a 6-hour drive one way, and it's not worth the cost in gas.)

Brief report from someone who attended the NY showing. The article quotes Rufus, but he gives a SPOILER: Hotel Noir >> The next night, Friday, November 9, The Cinema Society screened Hotel Noir in the basement of the Crosby Street Hotel. The film stars an ensemble cast that includes Malin Akerman, Mandy Moore, Danny DeVito, Rufus Sewell, and Carla Gugino, among others. Sewell was in a rare mood on the press line. There was a tabloid reporter ahead of me, and Sewell got in a zinger, asking if he was going to ask him, “Who have I shagged?” In the film, Sewell told me, “I get thumped.” Hit, not shagged. Carla Gugino, who had on a dress by Naeem Khan, said she loves watching old noir. “If I got even a dash of Bette Davis, I’ll be a lucky woman,” she said. “I feel akin to that aesthetic.”
gotham-magazine.com/channels/home-page/insightsThe article says there's a slideshow, but when you click on it, it comes up "page not found".
