Oh, I agree - great article!! It is always interesting to read about Rufus in the culture column of any magazine or newspaper, but I was very curious how he is shown in a specialized place like this. (A weak association - I think one the best Rufus videos on Youtube is his Actors Cut one. I just want to sit down and listen to him talking about his work and his experiences and his thoughts ...for more than 1 minute.)
I like the title - The best of times. They nicely walked around the topic of the strange relation between 'success' and 'best'.
"People talk about me in Arcadia and I think I was okay in it but I've given better performances in other productions that didn't have the same impact. But I knew Arcadia was going to be an event and I wanted to be part of it."
And they ended with the disappointed opinion about Tinseltown, "everybody’s bluffing anyway".
I love the parts about the play. "Sewell is playful, almost nonchalant, (...) At times, as Deeley, he bares his teeth at Anna, the interloper, (...)The impact is immediate and electric." and
"Both have very different approaches, different charm, different attack modes –- and you have to have different responses at your disposal."”
"I love being on stage, although it’s always a bit of a jolt to come out of the rehearsal room and go on to the stage."
Okay, I think I have to stop quoting, or I just copy the whole article.
I think it can be interesting to click on the blue words in the online version - there are some tiny articles linked. (From the Making It Better one: "The boy Tomas, however, having seen the opportunity, has come to London to learn how to be a capitalist, trampling over the feelings of the Bush House liberals as he does so." And the last line:"...and Rufus Sewell as the impatient, go-getting Tomas, using charm only when it suits him." ;D)
(I missed a mention of Charles II. That was a great role. He lived after Shakespeare, that is not his fault.)
