If I only knew what palimpsest meant. The first of my 7 times in London, the couple next to us left at the interval. I figured they were expecting "We Will Rock You". GO RUFUS!!!!!!!!!! ;D Rai Good, I'm glad I'm not the only who doesn't know what that means.... For what it's worth, here's Wikipedia's definition: A PALIMPSEST is a manuscript page, whether from scroll or book that has been written on, scraped off, and used again. The word "palimpsest" comes through Latin from Greek παλιν + ψαω = ("again" + "I scrape"), and meant "scraped again." Romans wrote on wax-coated tablets that could be reused, and a passing use of the rather bookish term "palimpsest" by Cicero seems to refer to this practice. Sorry, but it doesn't clear things up for me. I guess I've been reading too many Elmo books with my son!!

The idea is that the tablet holds impressions of all of it's former incarnations. A trained eye can see the impact of each of these dialogs in it's appearance today. What he saying is that Rufus gives a multilayered characterization of Jan in which we can see the impacts large and small of each event in his life on the man Jan is in the second act. Presumably he is also implying that Rufus builds them up in the first act. Well duh, I've been saying that for years and no one lets me write for the NY Times. The man's a genius. (Rufus, I mean)

Maxx---You should definetly right for someone---I'm sure Rufus wouldn't mind. You certainly say it better.
Just think now the rest of the world will know what we all have figured out a while ago...and I agree Rufus is a genius!!

BIG CONGRATS TO RUFUS!!!! Hey, do they do big ad in the paper with all the raves the day after an opening like they do with film weekend openings? I'd *love* to see a scan of it if they do.

It's great to hear that Rock N Roll and of course our love bunny Rufus, got rave reviews from the papers that matter. Call me contrary, but I'd consider it a badge of honour that those people of the audience who require or prefer simplistic theatre up and left. Personally, hearing about that just served to raise the play way UP in my estimation--ha, ha! Yes, yes to each his own...allowing that I am the sort of person to be intrigued rather than repelled by that which I don't understand, I still think the deserters might have stuck around if only to learn something! I know, I know, some just want to be entertained and in no way challenged...my point is that there is already SO MUCH mindless slop out there you would think EVERYONE could appreciate something a little different. But that is clearly not the case. Bravo to Tom Stoppard, Rufus and the rest of Rock 'N' Roll! May they have a fabulous and long run!!

Yes, what we think counts and I am sure that audience traveling from around the country carry weight, but sometimes having it in print in the New York Times takes precedence.

I was wondering where he'd got to, as well! He must have seen it, surely? He was such a fan last year...

As I had never heard of most of the people on the same page there, I found that very depressing! Good that it is up from the 3000s though!
