No question: There is no other actor, no other person with such entrancing eyes than Rufus. I simply love his eyes and the sophisticated language which they speak without using a voice or words.
But while watching some of his movies, especially the older ones, I cannot resist asking myself if there is something wrong with his left eye. Did he suffer a disease or an accident? Does anyone know?

I have always thought it was a case of a lazy muscle AElady, which causes his eye to go off track once in a while. I don't know for sure. But over the years he seems to have learned to control it pretty well. A lot of people will say there is nothing wrong with his eye, but I think we all could agree that it is that badge that makes him all the more lovable....the knowing that he actually isn't perfection...... but a flawed beautiful individual. Perfection is boring. It is our flaws that make us so darned interesting!

In the last few months of photos, I hardly ever saw the eye thing which lead me to ponder whether he's getting more sleep these days or had it 'fixed' until actually today in the Critics' Circle Awards photos where it's slightly noticeable. All I can say is woohoo! Love the eye thing.

I too have always found his eyes fascinating and have studied them often in pictures. They seem to be shaped differently. If you cover one half of his face and then the other it really is a remarkable difference. And lately I've begun to notice some asymmetry in his mouth, as well. The two corners aren't the same. I wonder if over the years he has learned to minimize the effect by the way he holds his head. I've noticed he sometimes tilts his head downward so that he's looking up slightly toward the viewer, and when he does that the asymmetry of his eyes isn't noticeable. That's just my opinion, of course, and it has been enjoyable working it out! Whatever the reason, all the asymmetry adds up to a beautiful face!

They glisten, sparkle, shine, dance, act, search, speak volumes - an incredible tool he masters and he knows it. He uses them too well not to know. Imperfections are the strength of true character. I like real people and Rufus is real people!

That pose thing 7sisters is something I noticed him do when he gets his picture taken. He pushes his jaw forward then tilts his head down, almost as if he were trying to tuck a second chin under (which we all know he doesn't have). I saw him do it more than once & thought it very interesting.

Since I just became aware of Rufus through EH, I also noticed the difference in his left eye in his earlier work, as well as the scar across his left eyebrow. In last week's EH episode, I also noticed what looked like a horseshoe shaped scar below his left eye which appeared to be surgical so he may have had some sort of procedure. Personally, I also love these so-called "imperfections". They give his face character and every scar, laugh line, and wrinkle makes him even more handsome in a real way, unlike the stars who look like they're wearing plastic masks because they've had every cosmetic procedure known to man.
His eyes are just hypnotic, not only a beautiful color but also intense, like they're just piercing into your very soul. I get chills just looking at them onscreen; I can't imagine what it would be like to see them up close and personal, although I would love to have that opportunity.

well... we have no say with the management of his eyes, let alone the rest of his person. too bad on all counts. anyway, we still keep what is wonderfully decribed by first member posting on this thread: the "sophisticated language" his eyes can speak. yet i sadly feel that their voice has been altered somewhat...

It's scary when a person need not utter a single sound but can "speak" volumes with his eyes alone. I don't know of any other actor who can do that but the most very talented Mr. Sewell. All others need not apply. The position has been spoken for.

They glisten, sparkle, shine, dance, act, search, speak volumes - an incredible tool he masters and he knows it. He uses them too well not to know. Imperfections are the strength of true character. I like real people and Rufus is real people! Amen to that! And indeed he is the only man I know of with that mysterious charisma and range of expression with his eyes alone. Also, he can project incredible spiritual light through them or darkness of the soul in the characters he plays. I haven't seen many of his films yet, but it hasn't taken too long to figure this out. Now, Im going to take a risk here as this place is quickly becoming my online home thanks to your kindness! I am an Agnostic, but I do believe in certain things I cannot deny as I am what I call a "Soul Reader" as well as a "Projector". In this I mean that I read others via their eyes and their overall energy output at any given time and I am able to project via my eyes and my overall energy whatever way I choose. It is my hypothesis that I gained these gifts due to the fact that I am a Higher Functioning Autistic. Autism has a nasty side effect in that we can't naturally read others and we seem very vulnerable if we do not learn to appear strong, so I adapted in order to survive. There is nothing "magical" about it. I simply trained myself in some ways and received training by Martial Arts Masters. Typically, I am able to do this via photographs. Of course, actually being in the physical presence of the person helps alot as I am not a so-called aura reader via photos. I just read general energy output which is easier in person. My reading: All of us here are accurate in what we have been seeing about him. This man is sincere, passionate, kind, gentle, but has a bit of darkness in him as well as we all do. He has great depth as a person with great range of emotion. I would feel totally safe in his physical presence. For me, that says a lot! I get that from his eyes and his body language - the latter during interviews I have watched so far. He has a hell of a lot of energy and has a difficult time getting it all out. One of the ways he has found to do so is acting and projecting all of that energy- which is why he has such presence on film. That strong energy is a vehicle through which he can be expressive in a creative and artistic manner. I also get the sense that he is a bit shy at times although he tries not to show it.... but I could be wrong.

vittoria: i understand your meaning. i connect with what you say regarding "soul" which has a true existence to me regardless of "religion", to me the soul is simply another concrete aspect of the human being, as concrete and real as the physical aspect, or the intellect. simply because we know less about it does not make it less real.
your "reading" sounds appropriate to me.
some people, especially people in the public eye, such as politicians, lawyers, actors, etc.... sometimes have those multiple layers of "protection" that keep us from "seeing" inside. and how can we, say, trust a politician if we cannot see the human underneath? how can we beleive the actor's character when he cannot even know and show who he truly is in the first place?
from all accounts i read from people who know rufus sewell, i get the same sense of "what you see is what you get". which is not very common in the trade he's in. and which could in fact be dangerous for any such person in, say, "hollywood".
it seems to me that rufus sewell could be a guy who remained basically the same as he was as a younger man, because of an inner stenght that did not necessitate those lying layers of protection. he knows who is is, that may be his best defense if ever he needs one.
which makes him very effective as an actor, his ressources being there, at the surface, for him to explore, wihtout undue inhibitions.
this "transparency" is also easy to detect in his so expressive face and eyes, although duly controlled by years of training, are not those of someone who lies a whole lot. there is simply no space for that.
seems like one decent human being to me.

Vittoria, that is quite an interesting hypothesis. I do believe what they say about the eyes being the window to the soul. Perhaps that's why we've all gathered here, some outide something that we've all connected to.
There is something quite genuine about him, nothing that I have ever noticed about another actor before. There is nothing phony either, he's very humble and it seems unspoiled by his good fortune, how amazing is that? Something of a rare breed in H'wood, he's been under the radar in the states anyway, you never read anything about him, more power to ya.

I think the thing I like best is his subtlety, notice in just about any movie and esp. EH what he does with his hands, he always seems to be in motion, and when someone is speaking he listens, I mean actually listens, and yes those eyes, sigh, all performances and never a disappointment. Not too many actors have the ability to do what he does, he is the litmus test for all in his profession. Just saw Illuminata again, and what a marvelous performance. Funny, sad, and downright wonderful.
How I wish he'd do more stage work.
