Ever had something really spooky happen to you? I used to work in a china and glassware shop, and when I hadn't been there very long, the previous owner died after a long illness. My colleagues, who had all worked for her, joked that Doreen would "visit" us before she departed this world. The next morning, we opened up the shop, and on the floor were two very heavy glass ashtrays, which had been on a glass shelf with smaller glass ornaments all around - all of which were still in place...!! That night, we put the ashtrays back on the shelf, made sure it wasn't loose, put heavy paperweights all around the ashtrays, so there was no way they could slide/roll off without everything else going as well...and next morning, they were both on the floor again, and all of the paperweights were still where we'd left them! She'd been a very heavy smoker (died of lung cancer), and one of the others shouted out "Doreen, stop it, you can't take them with you!", whereupon there was an almighty crash down in the basement - we dashed down there, and nothing, absolutely nothing, had moved/fallen/anything - and we never had any more spooky stuff after that. Still makes me shiver after all this time! And the building that I now work in used to be a military barracks/hospital/almshouse from about 200 years ago. My colleague arrived about 6.45 one morning to unlock the place, saw someone at the upstairs window and when she found the front door unlocked, she assumed one of the bosses had come in even earlier than her - except when she went in (the only entrance), the alarm was still on and the whole place was empty! Since then, several people have seen computer mice move by themselves - eek! *Twilight Zone music* Any more ghoolies and ghosties out there?

Ever had something really spooky happen to you? Any more ghoolies and ghosties out there? Ooo ee ooo ee oo yep!! Cool thread GE2!! Just last month my little sister, who is a chef, took some extra hours at the local cafe down on Lyall Bay Beach.. she rang me frantically the next day to ask me if I had anything she could wear for protection.. for herself and her anxiety .. when I asked her why she informed me that there was a ghost at work .. she had seen something out of the corner of her eye and turned and nothing was there.. she mentioned this to some of the other baristas and they told her that they also had seen this woman and several other incidents that unnerved them.. like the alarm going off in the wee hours when noone is there.. an alarm that monitors movement that is.. so okay.. if you see a ghost who ya gonna call.. your big sister of course.. I rallied round and found a friend who blesses houses and the like .. I mean this guy was asked to go to Rome (the real one) to bless a house for godsakes Rome!! which is full of priests!! (and the odd exorcist!!) so we went down and blessed the place but the next night she got the willies again but found that it was only a window banging loose.. she's alright now.. my friend explained to us that the woman was lonely.. she hadn't perished there which was one theory because it is a lifesavers club.. but she is attracted to company and people and the ghostly activity is about seeking out company which is why she appears in the kitchen when there is only one person there.. poor Lani.. she really has to work on her tan to get her the colour back in her cheeks...

I have heard a lot of ghost stories from the Brits. Lots of haunted places there. My parents had their house in Hawaii blessed because they were big believers too. As a child saw ghosts in my room many times. There was gentleman that liked to visit & a head that appeared one night on my chest looking down on me & a lady. Then there was the night my dog barked furiously at something on my bed only there was nothing there. As adults I learned that my sisters had had similar sightings. (We had never discussed anything as kids, probably for fear that if we did we would make it so). Needless to say my favorite shows on TV now are Most Haunted & Ghosthunters, to which I have become the butte of everyone's joke, but yes I am a believer.

When I was in Navy bootcamp I had some strange things happen. The buildings that housed the barracks were these huge rectangle monstrocities that were open bays. Each bay housed over a hundred girls or guys in bunk racks. At night there were two people on watch, one at the fore of the compartment and one aft. I was aft watch one night and I swear I saw a man standing oustide the aft door. The doors had a small window at about neck level. The guy had an old uniform on and had a full beard. Now in the today's Navy, full beards are not allowed, you may have a no shave chit, but you must keep the growth trimmed and neat....especially in Boot Camp. This guy looked haggard and tired, like he hadn't shaved in weeks. When I opened the door, there was no-one there. It was a common thing for the RDC's (Recruit Division Commanders) to make surprise rounds at all hours of the night, but this guy was no RDC, he looked old enough to be my grandfather, an old salty dog. Over the next few days, a few of the other girls talked about seeing the same thing...and I hadn't told anybody...creepy.
And then later when I was working at the ASD (Aviation Supply Division) at my old command in Whidbey Island, Washington another incident happened. The storage space we had was a large room with these movable racks. The racks were floor to ceiling in height, and could only be moved by turning this wheel at the end of each row. They were heavy as hell and it always took quite a bit of effort to get them going. I was back there one night puting a part away and was close enough to the end to see if anyone was there with me and there wasn't. But the rack started moving anyway, with no one turning the wheel.
Navy is creepy...

nothing as spooky as your stories, but still, this one makes me wonder.
i was about 15 when recuperated from the garage a box of things that had belonged to my grand-parents. in there was an oval portrait, a thick hand coloured photograph, of my irish great-great-grandmother, under a very thick sheet of glass.
i always liked this portrait because she looks like me. i dont know why, around that age - teeanage!!! - whenever i had problems, i would go to my room and stare at her portrait. somehow it always brought me peace and serenity. not that i did not have excellent family members and friends i could always speak to, but granma Mary was something else.
so one day, about a year later, i had jsut had a fight with my mother, i was feeling very unhappy, a bit desperate, in fact. i was sitting upon my bed, crying, and staring at the face of granma Mary.
and, suddenly, the sheet of glass split right in the middle, from top to bottom. one second later i was in the garden, hidden behind a bush and screaming.
i never replaced that sheet of glass. i applied some spray protector that a photograph recommended, and let granma Mary breath as she wanted.
to this day, her protrait has always been on my wall.

When I was young I used to live in Queens NY, when I was five or so we moved to suburbia, nice colonial house big yard etc. I found out that the previous owner had died in the house of a heart attack sitting in his favorite chair in the living room. Our dog would stop in her tracks and stare and growl at the spot where he died. She did this for a long while and then just stopped. Perhaps she sensed that he never really left.
Many years later my sister was living in Brooklyn renting a house with 3 college roomates. One SUnday she was in the house alone cleaning. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed a figure on the stairwell in striped pajamas, the shadow or whatever it was appeared to be a male, she froze for a second and just stared and made sure what she was seeing, in a stern voice she told "him" go way I'm not ready for this and in a flash it was gone. She said she was scared but felt that whatever it was was harmless. She found out that the previous owner ived alone and had died in the house and was found several days later. Just thinking about it makes my skin crawl. Creepy.

I love this thread! GE2, thanks for starting it. My spooky incident has to do with the night my father passed away. I was here in California, but my father, who'd been ill for quite some time, was in Texas. I fell asleep on the courch, worried about his ill health and making plans to go visit him one last time in Texas. I was leaving the next day.
Somewhere between my worrying, sadness and anxiety, I fell asleep. I dreamed my dad came to say goodbye to me, and not to worry about not being there when he passed, he would always be around me. He was covered in a light that seemed to emanate from within him, I can't really explain it.
When I got to Texas the next day, my family met me at the airport and told me he had died the previous night, and he had asked about me, and said he would see me soon, which he sort of did, that night. I haven't seen him since, but I do occasionally feel a breeze around me when there is none in the area, and chalk it up to his presence around me.
My son also has a great many of his personality traits, and his middle name is my father's, so I like to think he watches over him as well.

ru girl , I am sorry for your loss, strange isn't it. The unexplained. Your dream, then receiving the news. My sister and I are very close, three years separate us. For no reason at all I will have a thought in my head and either my sister will call or e-mail me with the exact same thought. She lives in NYC, I on Long Island, there are days when we don't have a chance to talk what with our busy skeds, but it's so strange how things like this happen.

Rugirl - what a poignant story, but also what a comfort to you that must have been. The day before my mother died (when we knew the end was near), she suddenly looked to her left (where there was only a wall) and said "What are you doing here?" One of my brothers thought she was just hallucinating, but I am certain she "saw" my grandfather coming to escort her to.....wherever. Prior to that, and years after my father died, I went to a medium and things she said (exact phrases my dad used) convinced me he was "with" me in that room. There was no way she could have used the exact same words out of the blue, as Dad had used old West Country dialect words not heard of in my area. Peach - your tales just gave me goosepimples!! And yours, Tipou and DGD. Tipou - we like you, too! How couldn't we - you're just as nutty as the rest of us!! I'm glad you all like this thread - but I started it in 2006!!!

Great thread and some extraordinary stories I cannot believe I missed it (how did that happen?) because I thought I would have been sure to contribute.
I am a very level headed and scientific type person for the most part and extraordinarily sceptical about a whole lot of things. However, I have really vivid memories from when I was a child - kneeling on my bed, watching out of the window and waving as my parents went off for a night out. The lady next door was baby sitting me but I was alone in the house. So, kneeling there with one hand on my knee and the other waving to my parents I felt this warm hand cover mine. I said "hello nanna Rush" (the lady next door) and turn my head to look at her but there was nobody there. I didnt think any more of it - it wasnt scary and I was only about 5 at the time. However decades later my mum and I were talking about the paranormal, probably in relation to a tv program or something and I told her that I knew there were ghosts and described my experience. She was amazed because while we lived there she had seen a young woman at the end of her bed several times. Doing the usual walking through walls bit (there had apparently been a door between their room and mine which had been blocked off). She had mentioned it to nanna Rush who told her that there had been a young woman commit suicide in the house many years before. I can still feel the hand on mine even after all these years.
Not so much spooky as weird though - before DH and I were married we wrote to each other for 3 years - airmail from one side of the world to the other. So many times I would write something in a letter which sort of required an answer and the answer would come in the letter which crossed mine so he was writing the answer at the same time as I was posing the question. We still often do almost the same but with sms - often I have been inputting a question and the answer will arrive simultaneously with mine being sent. I also have an uncanny knack of knowing what will be in the mail box but that can possibly be explained by prior knowledge etc. and it isnt infallible.
I also believe I "saw" my grandmother in the corner of the room when I had DS2 - she had died 4 days before he was born, she had been in UK and I was in Aus. Still think she hung around just long enough to see her gt grandson but she hasnt been back! OTOH could have been the gas and air helping my hallucination and wishful thinking!
I would love to go to a medium - I know all about the cold reading techniques etc but when they come up with something like your experience GE2, you just have to feel that there is something there.

Love this thread! I've had quite a few personal experiences but I've decided to share a story that happened to my great-aunt Jane. It's one that still sends chills down my spine.
Jane's husband, Randolph, was stationed in the Pacific theater during WWII. when he left to go overseas, he took a picture of Jane with him. Unfortunately, Randolph was killed when the jeep he was driving ran over a landmine. Of course, there was nothing left to send back home to Jane and their one-year-old son, Gerald, who would now never know his father.
A few weeks later, Fred, a soldier from the same small VA town as Jane and Randolph, was going through the pockets of a dead Japanese soldier. Among the items he found was a photograph of a woman who he immediately recognized as Jane! He knew Randolph had been killed so he decided to keep the picture with him until he got home. The war ended shortly afterward and after settling in back home, Fred went to visit Jane to pay his respects and return the photo. Jane, Randolph, and Fred had been friends before the war and a romance soon began to develop between Fred and Jane. They got married and, although he never officially adopted Gerald, he raised him as his son. I truly believe great-uncle Randolph was guiding the events to make sure his little boy had a father in his life, that Jane had someone to take care of her, and that the person they were with was someone he knew and trusted. It's beyond coincidence that the picture survived, ended up in the posession of a Japenese soldier who was killed and then found it's way to a man who just happened to be friends with Jane and Randolph.
