I did quite a bit of theatre back in high school and college. I miss it and your idea is a great one Pattirose! I have 3 kiddos to take up most of my time. (ages 7, 4, and 18 months) I have never had a talent for any kind of needlework though. My sister does some amazing things with it and made all three of my children a baby blanket. I am a bit of a writer in my spare time. Some poetry and a story I have been working on for around 4 years. Someday I will finish! I think....

I have no grandchildren, nor any children for that matter :[ I used to paint in my spare time. I was absoloutley terrible at it (and that's not me being modest), it usually turned out as a purple-ish-black blob. Sometimes when I'd work on it a little every day I could make a half-decent smiley face. Painted for quite a bit, it's just sad I have no art skills.

Quoll, I think I remember you saying on a previous post that your grandchild is due in August, is that right? Congratulations . . . and the baby set you made is absolutely adorable. That will become a treasured keepsake. . . I used to do cross-stitch and there are a couple of things that were completed before I had kids . . . but 19 years later, I still haven't picked up my unfinished projects . . . I do find though that now that I have teenagers there's more time . . . so you never know . . . and I actually started taking piano lessons a few months ago. It's something I've wanted to do since I was a kid but my parents couldn't afford, so I'm going for it!

Same here, but I've only been thinking about it. I don't own a piano, or even a keyboard, but I've given lessons some serious thought lately, since I've always wished I could play too.

Ree, Go for it! When we moved into this house (9 years ago) there was an old player piano in the basement my husband wanted to get rid of and I just couldn't do it. He always jokes that we knocked down and built up the entire house around a piano we were never going to use. My daughter took piano lessons for about 2 years but piano wasn't one of the things that really excited her so she gave up after a while. I didn't even try with my son, because though he's really talented with music, he prefers all the LOUD instruments - trumpet, electric guitar, bass guitar, drums!!) We had bought one of the electronic keyboards when my daughter was playing, so we had both just sitting around collecting dust. I'm enjoying my lessons so much -- I find myself practicing constantly I guess I can't believe I'm finally getting to do it after all these years . . . so I'm STRONGLY encouraging you -- just in case you need a little push (have I pushed hard enough for it yet?

Well done Terri Mac - that is really something worthwhile doing! I admire you for taking up that challenge. We have a piano gathering dust - DS2 learned and is very proficient but he has moved out and not taken his piano with him (got the violin, mandolin, guitar, ukelele and recorders but not the piano!). I wonder how old is too old ......

Thank you Terri Mac! I’m afraid I am the kind of person who needs a push, else I may just continue to dream about it. My main problem is that I’m interested in too many things, and flit between them, painting, gardening, writing, DYI, without spending the necessary time to become proficient at any of them! LOL [quote author=quoll board=offtopic thread=1183017826 post=1185057100] We have a piano gathering dust - I wonder how old is too old ......[/quoteWell, since you ask me, Ha Ha, I’d say never too old for new interests! Look how long I waited to become a fangirly!! LOL This sounds like the perfect new project for the newly retired lady with over 40 extra hours a week now available.

Are you a Gemini by any chance? I do the same thing but who cares if one ever becomes proficient at any of them - it's fun! Go for it!

Ree, we're in a similar situation vs retiring recently and being blessed with too many interests, which I think is mostly terrific. Having something to do in different mind states is a real gift.I take classes in different things from time to time and things don't get dull that way (harp, singing, middle eastern drum, flamenco dance, bellydance.)Latest was a 3 day class by a courtroom artist on how to do a quick portrait that jump started my portrait drawing again. Go get those piano lessons.

I'm afraid I unintentionally misled you since Quoll is the lady who recently retired, and I was responding to one of her quotes, but couldn't get it properly boxed. Thank you too for the encouragement.

Thanks to you too Patti, surely with all this encourgement I'll get off my duff & start those lessons. I'm not a Gemini, but one of your sister air signs, Aquarius. Oddly enough my 2 bothers and I make up the air triad of the Zodiac, so I did grow up with a Gemini.

Gosh, you guys are certainly making me think outside the box! I had pastimes more like learning bridge or torchon lace making lined up for retirement. However, I definitely have the belly so perhaps I should think about doing something with it and trying belly dancing!!!
I have embarked upon some d-i-y - is that actually a pleasure occupation for some folk or is it just some kind of masochistic pastime? I have also made occasional forays to the gym for a quick erg and try and walk 2 - 5 miles a day to get some sort of fitness back on the cards. I have been toying with the idea of maybe doing some acting classes for grannyagers but think I lack the confidence and capacity and it would take more than a couple of glasses of red to get my inhibitions loose enough to give that a go!
As to those 40 spare hours a week - perhaps someone could find them for me because I dont seem to see them around my place at all:)

I did misread your post, Ree...so how about a writing class in September to spur your writing through the winter (only 5 months away!!)

OK, so I decided to learn something new - I was inspired by you all, and thought I would face my biggest fear - FRENCH KNOTS! So, I went to a silk ribbon embroidery workshop this morning and this is what I came home with. For a first attempt I was quite pleased especially now that I am no longer FK impaired. Not sure if I will ever do any more but it was a great workshop!
