The Founding by Cynthia Harrod-Eagle . Isn't it the first one in a looooong series on English history? Yes and I have just finished reading the second one 'The Dark Rose ' set in the Tudor period

Just found out for all you ladies who've read The Help, the film isn't due out in England until October 28th. I'm unsure about any other European countries though.

PGG...LOVED the Dan Brown books, although The DaVinci Code was my favorite. That caused a real brouhaha here in the States, followed by many, many documentaries, some saying how the book could be based in fact, and others saying not. If I was Dan Brown, I would have laughed myself hysterical, and rolled around naked on the floor in my big pile of money....LOL

If I was Dan Brown, I would have laughed myself hysterical, and rolled around naked on the floor in my big pile of money....LOL He probably did! ;D The books and films were smash hits in Germany, too, and I stopped counting the (pseudo) documentaries about the Illuminati and Freemasons and the Vatican. The "best" one I saw made a very big fuss about the symbols in Da Vinci's Last Supper and the secrets of the Vatican, presenting all kinds of "proof", and in the end it was just "Well, that's how it could have been. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't." I still enjoyed the books (but I have to say I didn't like the last one as much as the first two).

Just finished reading Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. Excellent in every way. Once you get into it you can't put it down.
It was recently televised on BBC 1 starring Jason Isaacs as the laid back private investigator Jackson Brodie. It was a couple of months ago and was televised on a Sunday night with part two on the Monday, for about three weeks! I enjoyed it immensely but was unable to watch all of them, so was so pleased to read the book!!
I've been out and bought two further books by Kate Atkinson today!

Sounds great! I bought one of her books when we were in Jersey in June (stupidly the second or third one in the series), and I guess I'll keep an eye on the TV series, too.

If any of you have never read anything by Willa Cather, I highly recommend it. 'My Antonia' and 'O Pioneers!' especially. My Antonia was written in 1918 and O Pioneers! was written in 1913. Both of the books are about fictional European immigrants (or children of European immigrants) who became American pioneers, living their lives on the American prairie. I read My Antonia about a year ago and fell in love with it. I just finished reading O Pioneers! last night and I've fallen in love with that one too. It's a shame that neither of these stories have been made into films, as old as they are, but, that's the case with a lot of great stories, unfortunately.

Is it plain old serendipity or something in the atmosphere of this forum that so many books I've read or want to read are popping up in this thread? I bought "My Antonia" yesterday!

I bought "My Antonia" yesterday! Are you serious? Good lord. Of all the books in the world! You'll really enjoy it, Kate, and if you can, definitely try and get your hands on O Pioneers. It's shorter than My Antonia, and although Cather doesn't delve as far into her characters in O Pioneers (because it's written in third-person, unlike MA which is written in first-person) it still resonates just as much as MA, just for some slightly different reasons. There's a fair share of gorgeously-written scenes in both of them and I have a feeling you'll end up loving the same scenes as me. I can't wait to hear what you think of MA!

Yep, I'm serious! ;D I've read an interesting review about the book a while ago, and recently someone offered an unused hardcover version for sale on my literature message board, so I decided to finally get it. Will try to read it soon!

I am so excited to say that my novel will be arriving for sale in the next 2-3 weeks, depending on the format!
Woohoo!
I'm on the George RR Martin's second book A Clash of Kings, and I am still enjoying it, although I have to say that there are some slower parts to this book that I've had to slog through that wasn't true of the first...but now that it's wrapping up, it's getting to where I really hate to put it down...
