I think Uke and I may be the only ones to have seen this Tom Stoppard trilogy... Nevertheless, , what a gorgeous staging and production. As a companion piece to Rock 'n' Roll is was fascinating as it provides the story up to the Russian Revolution. And of course in Rock 'n' Roll we get from the invasion of Prague to the fall of the iron curtain. I think Tom Stoppard needs to write the piece in between. After this production I'm wondering if the Vivian Beaumont might not be the perfect theatre for Rock 'n' Roll when it comes to B'way.

Did you see all three parts?? Isn't the art direction just the best?? I do think there is room for improvement for RnR in that respect and the NY folk did an amazing job on Utopia. The Vivian Beaumont is my favourite NY theatre space. For some reason I find the theatres around Times Square less inspiring, I suppose much like the ones on Shaftesbury Avenue. Plus, I love Lincoln Center for its architecture and general vibe. It's NY's equivalent of the South Bank. Without the view. Did the cast do the curtsy/bow at the curtain call when you saw it? The curtain call is almost as good as the play!

yes we did. Not in order but it was kind of nice to see Salvage first then Voyage and Shipwreck. I think Salvage was my favorite part, Uke. Less of Ethan Hawke stomping and bellowing his lines. Oh there is definitely room for improvement in the staging of Rock 'n' Roll. But I think it really needs to be a bit shabby and bleak at least in Jan's apartment. You know it's funny but I couldn't recall ever being in the Vivian Beaumont at first but either I imagined it after 9 hours or it was true and it came back to me I thought maybe I had once seen something there. As to Rock 'n' Roll being there, I think it's overkill for the actual staging but I like the intimacy of the theatre vs the seating and I know they are going to need to make money. It's purely selfish actually because I want to be able to see it in a good space. Unlike Coast it's not necessary for it to be in such an elaborate space. For anyone who is interested the VB has a very nearly theatre in the round stage that's on a turntable with lots of different platforms that rise and fall below stage level and a proscenium behind. Since Coast has such a huge cast they use it all. The front thrust would be great for Rock 'n' Roll though they don't need any of the platforms. But they might use the turntable which is how it was staged on the WE. I don't know if they ever use it for any long run shows that are not in Rep as Coast is. And as I said, it would kind of be overkill for Rock 'n' Roll. As to Lincoln Center, I have to admit I feel a bit cheated going there and not getting to see the Opera. The water bow? That's what it reminded me of--the flow of a river over rocks. Yes they did it. And for Uke they would have a nice little counter where she could purchase her Rock 'n' Roll tee-shirt, mouse-mat, coffee mug and a audio recording of the show. And for me there would be a nice place to buy the book, if I didn't already have it.

I'm reading The Coast of Utopia. Do you think Tom Stoppard has a fan club? If not I think you and I should start one, Uke...
Tom Stoppard quote of the day:
"Eternity's a terrible thought. I mean, where's it going to end?"

Love the quote! Should we have one weekly? I just bought a copy of Arcadia, and have Rock'N'Roll on preorder. Hope I'm not in too far over my head!!

Arcadia is just the best thing ever. Do you have the audio recording?? you can find it here: www.roofsewell.com/multimedia.htm I love Arcadia. I never tire of it. Maybe we can make it an adjunct to the Ruf stuff. We could start a Stoppard thread here and see if anyone is interested. At the moment there is a lot more of Sir Tom in the news than there is of Mr. Sewell... So I also want to write a fan letter to Jack O'Brien.

I want to hang out with Billy Crudup. If they have to replace anyone from the orginal RnR cast, I wouldn't mind if BC jumped in.
Did you ever get to talk to Sir Tom?

I would like to see them replace Max but that's not likely as he's probably one of the only ones who won't have visa issues. god, no, but I think I'd love to... or I might be paralyzed with fear. I'd have to take notes on my hand and refer back to them periodically... or have a martini or two before hand. I think one would need either large breasts or a very lively mind to talk with Sir Tom... I do have one of those.

I know, it's only me wanting to hang out with Billy Crudup. I've decided that RnR isn't 'good ole RnR' without Roof, Pete and Ed so really, the one who's left is Nigel and obviously Billy wouldn't go for such a small part, methinks. Damnit. I spoke to him once but I was drawn into it by Pete Sullivan who I was intending to speak to and he was with Tom so he went 'oh, you know who this is, don't you?'. So we talked Utopia for about 3 seconds. He's enormously easy to talk to.

I can just imagine the foolish things that might come out of my mouth--but never an actor... "Actors are the opposite of people." - ts so go hang out with Billy Crudup. You know where he is 6 days a week... okay maybe not 6 since he's not in Salvage but close. It's NYC. Invite him across the street to the conveniently located Starbucks for a coffee... you don't need someone from R'n'R to introduce you.

I've just bought a ticket for Voyage for tomorrow at the top price. I can't believe it, I'll have spent close to $300 on this bloody trilogy... that's a weekend mini-break!! I'm crazy... eta: come to think of it, I'm not spending money on travel or air fare or accommodation, so it's not all bad, I suppose
