among many, many things I love in my life there is Sewell and musicals, so i decided to find out if there are any musicals lovers on the board so guys- anyone who loves listening to musicals &going out to theatre?? i've been to London just once and was impressed by the number of theatre houses where musicals are performed(and A.L.Webber is a real king there:) --for me it was like paradise what a pity Rufus is not a singing actor like Michael Ball ,for example....

Oh ... Iam defintely a musical lover as well !! I am a huge fan of anything Sondheim and when I am in the car I mostly play soundtracks. Don't you think...if Rufus could sing...he would make a great Sweeney Todd?

Sorry guys, but it's been well documented that Rufus would rather eat his own feet than appear in a musical. I'm also unsure how impressed he'd be to feature in the same sentence as Michael Ball, as he's considered a bit of a joke in the UK. A kind of 'housewives favourite' if you will. I for one would be delighted if he'd go and live on an island by himself and never utter another sound. Just my own opinion, you understand

I'd be the next person in line to gnaw on Rufus' feet if he did a musical.

Well, I *LOVE* musicals, so I'd probably be right behind Maxx in line.

I still maintain he would make a great Sweeney Todd--- We will do the NON-musical version of it and he will be fabulous, demented and funny!!

I'm curious about this since Sweeny Todd is typically short, older, chubby, demonic and creepy and he has a killer voice. I can't see any of those traits in Rufus who is tall, laughing, quite slender at the moment as a matter of fact and engaging... and I don't think he actually sings a lick except perhaps in the shower. I could see Paul Giamatti playing him, if he had any talent. so tell me more... ;D

I don't think he actually sings a lick except perhaps in the shower. Yes, he does! Dangerous Beauty, Gone to Seed....and even in Middlemarch, off-screen.

---tough crowd today---I'm not sure Im qualified enough to get in a theatre debate with YOU Maxx. You definetly have intimidated me with some of your postings but what the heck.... I guess it was the rendition that I saw---Sweeney Todd was played by a tall, very dark, charismatic looking guy mayby late 30's early 40's. He was funny and demonic. It was in a very small regional theatre in Maryland---During the end of intermission he came out on stage and stood there with his arms crossed glaring at the audience (in order to make them get seated more quickly) which was obviously blocked that way and than he just turned and left the stage. It was the only production of Sweeney Todd that I have seen but after seeing it I always pictured him that way and would never think of someone like Paul Giamatti playing him and not God-forbid Johnny Depp. And even though Rufus is laughing and engaging---we ALL know he can definitely play "demonic" whether he likes to or not .....so there : ) boy you all REALLY hate musicals don't you?

ST is pretty demanding vocally. It takes a real singer to do it right. Rufus really doesn't sing well enough to do something like that--at least not without a lot of vocal work. And it isn't in his vocal range. It really requires a bass or a baritone with a good deep range. The few times I've heard Rufus sing he sounds to be a tenor. I actually happen to like Sweeney Todd. It sounds like the production you saw was quite a bit more light-hearted than the book and score would typically imply, so I understand why you think Rufus would be a good fit. I've never seen a campy production of Sweeny Todd so I'd be open to observation. The story is actually fairly bleak and Sweeney Todd is usually very self-absorbed and abstracted from reality. He doesn't take any delight in what he does, he just does it. He wouldn't stare at the audience because he wouldn't notice their existance unless there was some commerce involved. It's Mrs. Lovett who provides the relief in the story. She is the one who cheerfully chops them up and cooks them into meatpies with great alactrity. So your version sounds interesting. and I don't hate musicals. I hate junk musicals and B'way seems to be rife with them these days. I'm a great fan of the Mikado which puts the absurd in ridiculous and Sondheim and Webber often do things I like. And if you consider it a musical, some do, I'm a great fan of Brecht
