Here's what I wrote elsewhere:
First of all, this is somewhat of an anti feel-good film. Every scene has something threatening, be it Bangkok's nightlife or the Burmese jungle. There seems to be only one scene where the sun is shining, where Jeanne steps Bo-Derek-like out of the Ocean and Paul observes her admiringly and lovingly. Other than that all the beautiful scenery is shrouded in heavy rain and clouds. Unfortunately, the clips and the trailer almost give away the whole film. It's a descent into hell for Paul and Jeanne, because Jeanne cannot accept the death of their son Joshua and they embark on a mad chase into the jungle that goes from bad to worse. Paul has no choice but to accompany his wife, because otherwise she'd have accused him of not wanting to save their son. And that was the problem for me. Jeanne turns into something of a lunatic dishrag, Paul gives her all his love, devotion, solace, support, and money, being, in return, blamed for having let their son go and thrown to the wolves (i. e. a bunch of bloodthirsty kids) and disemboweled. I left the cinema more angry than anything else. I so wanted to save him from his horrible wife. So what's the point of the movie? It's certainly filmed very well. There's an interesting blend of reality and dream/nightmare. But other than that I don't really see it. More style than substance. But maybe somebody who's seen it can enlighten me further.

I've got a question: Has Rufus ever said anything about this film?

Off the top of my head, the only thing I recall is something shortly after filming finished, saying how exhausted he was.
Where did you see it, Sharman? In the UK?

Thanks GE2. Doesn't it seem strange that he's never really talked about it?
Anyway, I saw it in the French speaking part of Switzerland. They had the same release date for Vinyan as France.

Has anyone heard if this film has any scheduled dates in the U.S.? He also did Downloading Nancy which he hasn't really mentioned either. Out of the two I'd be interested in seeing Vinyan, though both films look rather dark in subject matter. Both roles are so different than anything he's ever done before, something he's been wanting to do for a long time. I haven't read much news on the latter, and intermittent info on Vinyan.

After I've seen Vinyan, I think that I could stomach Downloading Nancy. But it doesn't seem to be shown anywhere.

Doesn't it seem strange that he's never really talked about it? Well, not really - he was filming whenever it's been at film festivals so hasn't been available to do the press junkets then. Interviews he's done since filming finished have been about his other work, and he has mentioned both Vinyan and Downloading Nancy when asked what other work he has coming up. I'm sure once (err......IF) Vinyan gets a general release date, and if he's not working, he'll be a part of the media rounds. Although, I don't know if you noticed that in his blog, when asked about Rufus, Fabrice du Welz commented that he had been "decidedly unavailable" since January, which makes it sound as if Rufus was avoiding him!. Given that he was still doing R&R then, and that there has been a long period when du Welz was perfecting the film, then Rufe was starting EH when the film was finally ready, that comment was a little......well, maybe something got lost in the translation (not a swipe at Renata's excellent translation - it came up that way on Google's iffy auto-translation, too) I do wish he'd been at the Venice Film Festival showing, though - there were tons of photos of Emmanuelle there. Oh, yes - one bloke on flickr reckons this is a photo of Rufus with her: but it's hubby:

Ah, okay, I see! Thanks, GE2. I do hope that Vinyan gets an international release.

Sony has bought Vinyan for international release. Now "if" and "when" it ever happens is another story... You guys should try reading our webpage once and a while. It was a news item a few weeks ago.

I remember reading Sony had the North American rights, Maxx - don't think anything was said about the UK, more's the pity.

It's the prodigal renata turning up (like a bad penny ;D).
I finally checked Du Welz's blog and his last entry, to signal the end of the blog was 10 November. He says "The adventure ends here. In France and Belgium the numbers aren't good. I'm sad about it, but what can you do? I'm sticking to my conviction, the experience was fascinating and sumptuous. I'm not mad at anyone, I learned a lot and I'll do better the next time... I thank those who followed this blog during these few months of post-production. Fabrice"
I guess "not good numbers" doesn't bode well for wider distribution... though it would seem nuts not to send the DVD throughout the world.
