To be honest I went in with low expectations, although I do like the occasional rom com. I usually end up comparing everything to Love Actually which I think is one of the most intelligent sweetest rom coms to be made. That being said, I'm with Rai. I liked it. We laughed a lot. I, of course, liked the premise of the Brit / American exchanging of residences & saliva. I feel the best moments were between Kate & Wallach & would have liked more. Here are 2 pros that make you hear the dialog & watch the acting ....not the clothes, or the background.
I felt a little anger looking at how absolutely adorable Jude looked, & kept wondering why it had to be him & not Rufus. The 2 were interchangeable in my eyes. (I can imagine all the Law fans are in hog heaven at the moment) Roof was a dastardly good tosser. His character really had no redeeming qualities......bout time. He played his part well, & did not feel short changed by his time on the screen, like I did in The Illusionist.
So if you can get past the contrivances... such as the fact that Jude is incredibly tan for a Brit in winter, which we both picked up on... & that Cameron's wardrobe is totally comprised of cashmere & angora & that she isn't worth the money she is paid & that silly "running towards the one you love" ending, it will be good for you. It will make you smile.......if this is your cup of tea.
Oh & fortunately Black's part was smaller than I thought. Good thing. I can only take so much of those eyebrows. (He has got to play a serial killer one of these days.)

I agree with Britfan's general review, and I too adored the scenes with Kate and Eli Wallach, which were not only heartwarming but very funny as well.
This is actually the first time I have so disliked Ru's character, a testament to his great work. I just wish his character had not been so one-dimensional and without redeeming qualities, but that's not his fault. He can only work with what he has.
I wasn't ever a big Jude Law fan, but I think he was absolutely adorable in this film, although more California tan than British winter. The girls who play his daughters were very cute as well.

I enjoyed it! I dont much like Jude Law but I could live with him in this one. I had a good and appreciated Rufus the Rat. Nothing redeeming about him at all! It did make me homesick though I must admit!

I wnet to see this last night and thought it was really cute. Like Britfan, I had low expectations though I'd been heartened by reading the fairly good reviews.
Jasper was really despicable, but Jude Law was to die for. Before seeing this, I always wondered what the fascination with Jude Law was, as in why the tabloids are always trailing him, etc.
My mother-in-law (who's 75) accompanied me to the cinema and tittered and laughed her way through it too.
The supporting roles were all very well filled. Eli Wallach, the two little girls and of course Rufus.
Jack Black back to his "School of Rock" form. (As distinct from "Tenacious D") and Kate Winslet as appealing as ever.
The English homes were picture book settings. Is there really such a remote cottage to be found within commuting distance of London? And does anyone remember snow lying so long ever?

I have yet to see a performance where Rufus does not become the character and is not absolutely believable in the role. He even had a fleeting look of concern(?) when Kate heard the announcement - granted it was fleeting because he was thinking about himself, but he wasn't conscienceless. With that said, I liked the movie very much.
Kate is a very good actress but Cameron was really working my nerves with her over-acting and whining which I found obnoxious which lasted until she met Jude. I was glad and could quite like her character that next morning. I loved the intermittent film trails of her life. Her acting improved much more after she visited Jude's home. It was a very good movie and I enjoyed it.

I finally got to see The Holiday, and I enjoyed it. My husband even got some chuckles out of it. The cottage was beautiful. It looked like it belonged on a Christmas card. And it's true, Rufus was unlikeable in this one.

This movie sort of annoyed me with the stereotypes of crying women taking years to get over the cad... okay, it's Rufus, but I don't think Kate Winslet was doing that in real life! It's worse that this is one of the few female Hollywood directors/writers and she can't give us something more.... substantial from a woman's point of view. That said, I did walk out with a goofy grin on my face, which was more to do with Kate and Wallach than Diaz or Jack Black's attempts to be sympathetic.... NOT TO MENTION the whole time Rufus is on at the end, I was wanting to pull the pants right off him, right there in the kitchen.......... (a quick shag with a git never hurt anyone did it? ) It was lovely to see his curls all natural and springy. And any time he opens his mouth, I wonder how anyone could possibly focus on anything else, Jude Law included, it's THAT VOICE!

I saw the Holiday last week, with my hubby and 2 daughters and one of my daugher's friends and we enjoyed it for the most part. I see everyone's views on Cameron Diaz's storyline......it wasn't that good and she overacted big time! Her relationship with Jude Law seemed to be based only on sex, not really on any kind of relationship..........so to see the big scene with her running back to the house and then the ending with all of them together......that part seemed silly to me.
Kate Winslet's story with Jack Black was much better, IMO, and her story with Eli Wallach was just amazing! It had me in tears when he walked into that auditorium to see, not 12 old farts, but a full house standing in awe of him!!!! And her relationship with Jack Black seemed a LITTLE more plausible to me........not a lot, but a little!
Rufus played a complete a** very well! I loved how I didn't love his character, I didn't feel sorry for him, I didn't want anything good to happen to him!!! Not many actors could pull that off, but Rufus certainly did! And, yes, he looked quite yummy! I couldn't believe he made the trip all the way to LA............when he was still marrying someone else! What a jerk!
It was good to see Shannyn Sossaman too..........my daughters didn't recognize her as "Jocelyn" from AKT! They didn't do any scenes together, so I wonder if she and Rufus had a chance to chat?
All in all, it was a fun film, not great, but good and I'm glad that I saw it. I loved the cinematography in the England scenes! Is Surrey really about 40 miles from London? Does it really look like that at this time of year?

Is Surrey really about 40 miles from London? Does it really look like that at this time of year? Michelle Less than 40 miles - and it doesn't often snow! This year especially, you'd get gales, then fog, and the next batch of gales is heading to us just in time for the New Year! Oh to be in Hollywood-England!!
