I got "The Importance of Being Earnest" for Christmas, and we had such fun with that lovely Wilde adaptation last night. Colin Firth and Rupert Everett are fantastic in this, as is, of course, Judi Dench. I have a hunch this one will be in for many re-watches.
Besides, this is one case where a pun works perfectly in German, both "Ernest" and "earnest" translate as "Ernst".

I tend to scour the Radio times for films I haven't seen to save for an insomnia night. I love Albert Finney so when I saw "The Browning Version " was on TV , I taped it. Oh! it was wonderful An adaption of the Terence Rattigan play, it was superb, everything about it .The supporting actors , Rattigan's marvellous writing, the photography, the background scenery. but especially darling Albie.
This must be one of his very best performances.
I do recommend this It is available on Amazon uk at a reasonable price.
Warning : It is a weepy.

With Rupert Everett / Jeremy Northam / Cate Blanchett/ Minnie Driver/ Julianne Moore ?? An Ideal Husband ?? With your love of the English language, you should love this too.

Jeremy Northam? Cate Blanchett? Minnie Driver? That sounds like a must-have!
Thanks for the hint, I think I'd never heard of that one before.

An excellent but not so little film that I have just seen is 'Quartet' A cast to die for directed by the wonderful Dustin Hoffman. Four retired opera singers,( Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins and Billy Connolly ) in a home for retired musicians : you might think this to be sad and down. No way , it is funny ,charming and up beat and nobody dies! magnificently acted and a soundtrack so beautiful as to be unbelievable.
Catch this!!

Awww, I'd really love to see that one. I'll have to check if it's still on at the little arthouse cinema in town. The cast sounds wonderful and I've only heard good reviews so far.

The Heart of Me A really lovely film I have just seen on DVD. I suppose you could call it a period piece as it is set late thirties and the WWII years It stars Helena Bonham Carter, Olivia Williams and Paul Bettany in an unusual love triangle. Beautifully acted and very moving

It is - I once bought it at a discount shop for about a pound...somehow it didn't really impress me at the time, but some years later I remembered I had it and rediscovered it and really liked it.

I'd never heard of that before, but it looks just like the thing I might like. To say nothing of the fantastic actors involved. Thanks!

I don't know if this is the right place for this. I bought an old double DVD of a TV series to take to France with us. I had not seen it...it was Any Human HeartM(o)B and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story of a man's life starting when he goes to university until he dies. Moving... sexy... funny... book and screenplay written by William Boyd , Three stages of the man's life were played by Sam Clafin, Matthew McFadyen and Jim Broadbent. The cast reads like our game ... six stages of Rufus Matthew McFadyen ...... Pillars of the Earth.... Rufus Tom Hollander ........ Martha meet Frank etc.... .Rufus Ed Stoppard ......... Zen ... son of Tom connected to Rufus... Arcadia ...Rock'n'Roll... Darkside... Rufus Sam West ......... Arcadia..... Rufus Freddie Fox ..........Parade's End.... .Rufus Hayley Atwell ..........Pillars of the Earth...Restless ..... Rufus Gillian Anderson..........I'll Follow You Down.... Billy and the Goblin Revolution... Rufus William Boyd ..........who wrote book and screenplay of Restless BTW
Has anyone seen the pics of Hayley at the London Evening Standard awards? I thought that was some neckline when she appear at the Pillars premiere with Rufus but this !! Blimey

Back on the film note... I saw an interesting film yesterday. Just picked something at random as I was doing a sewing project. Settled on an Anthony Hopkins film - he's always good to watch. The film was called 'The Tenth Man.' Originally a Graham Greene novel. The film itself was rather intriguing in itself, but there were a few surprises along the way regarding the cast. A very young Kristen Scott Thomas played one of the main roles and was excellent. Derek Jacobi turned up and there was also a brief appearance by Jim Carter (Mr Carson in Downton Abbey). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tenth_Man_(novel)Well worth a viewing.
