Robela and kmk, your latest reviews make me want to see it tonight again. You really summed up the relationship between Mick and Evelyn.
The last 5 min of the film were for me so emotional, hoping and praying that things turned out well for them and that expression on Micks face between hope and insecurity when waiting at the station is heartbreaking. Just reading about it brings almost tears to my eyes. Rufus conveyed so much it that single little scene.

You really did sum it up perfectly Robela! I never even realised that it was always her seeking Mick out, he just seemed to have such a strong background presence (a bit of an oxymoron, but I'm hoping it makes sense!) that I assumed he was subtly drawing her in just by being there. I don't think it helped that I didn't particularly trust his character early on, so I didn't realise how careful and considerate towards her he was. It really is a film that stays with you for a while afterwards!!

Ophelia , we are so alike, we might be twins except it would be a glass of Chenin blanc for me. I have reviewed IASL before but reading all you girls' comments I had to put in my thoughts too. I think Mick fell in love with Evelyn from the start but was always aware of the differences between them. She being highly cultured and educated in a period of time when women were not. He, an adventurer and not very educated. We don't know much about his background but it would seem to be a bit rough. He always stood back, I don't think this was because she was married because I think he had nothing but contempt for Philip. And Philip always thought he was superior both to Mick and to Evelyn ...and the people he was studying. Always patronising , always superior, always her teacher. Never as 'different' equals which Mick and Evelyn always were; loving each other for what they were. Yes, the gold ring referred to them and Mick knew it but Evelyn didn't until much later. Yes she went after him each time. He was always standing back but waiting there each time to support and care for her. Even standing back for her to come to him after leaving her the pearl. I don't know whether they could stay together. I think that Evelyn might have had the great love to stay but could Mick take it ? He was a very proud man. I would like to think they did. I sometimes think from the opening lines "I once met a man .." perhaps he died later, but that would be too unbearable. A truly lovely film and one to make you go on thinking about it long after you finish watching it.

Yes Francesca, I agree, you go on thinking and reflecting on this film, like KMK said it haunts you.! I cannot ever catch the first lines in the film where she says: 'I once met a man......... and then I hear who was not my husband' and the film is showing Mick coming off a boat on to the shore with the natives round him! Truly haunting story! Love Rufus in this film!!

I don't know whether they could stay together. I think that Evelyn might have had the great love to stay but could Mick take it ? He was a very proud man. I would like to think they did. I sometimes think from the opening lines "I once met a man .." perhaps he died later, but that would be too unbearable. I agree, it sounds like she outlived him, but I love to imagine that they got to enjoy their love at least for a certain time ... Probably it was quite hard for him to finally decide to seek her out again - as you say, he's a very proud character. I'm not sure if he did want her to see him, as he placed the envelope with the pearl on the table secretly and went away while she was busy autographing. Looks like he'd just wanted to sneak one last glimpse of her and finally let her have her winnings, while avoiding to draw her attention. It must have been quite a shock to him when they met at the station, with no chance for him to conceal the terrible injury he has suffered, which deprived him of any chance to go back to his former life after the war, his physical health (not to mention the imprint his wartime experience must have left on his mind and soul) and, of course, at least part of his treasured independence. This look he gives her with his big sad eyes through the pouring rain encompasses so many mixed emotions, but above all, it seems to me that he tries to apologize for her having to see him in such a sorry state now, no longer the strong, fit, carefree figure he was when they parted. But I think Evelyn would be the very person capable of dealing with all this in the right way, inobtrusively, competently helping him cope with his changed life, just as he did so wonderfully with her after Philip had died.

I wish I could put my thoughts in words like you all do, but it's just wonderful to read them and to start thinking about the film once again.

KMK you put the feelings into words so well! Yes I agree he is a proud man and has obviously suffered a lot through the war but I have to think in my own heart that their love will come through and they will have a life together!

Why do I still cry at the grave bit ? I mean I've watched this a few times before and therefore know the ending but it still gets me every time.
I thought it was interesting that Bill Bennett said in his interview that Mick exploited the natives. I disagree. I may have my Rufus tinted glasses on again here, but tome he's a trader. He does what traders do and trades stuff they want for what he wants. He gives them whatever they ask for.
I love the slant on this movie that a couple of anthropologists go to study the behaviour and power struggles of the natives and it's ultimately their behaviour and power struggle that gets the attention.
Rufus gives another great performance. Even his stance speaks a thousand words. He can convey more in the flicker of an eye -lid than many actors can convey with their whole being.
I found I didn't mind the colour tint watching this time round either. I actually found it quite beautiful. Instead of zooming the picture I sat closer to the tv and this seemed to improve the picture a bit. Will have to wait for my new disc to arrive to see if it plays better or whether the problem lies in the fact it's region 1.
All in all this movie has joined my joint 3 position of favourites.
