and what about roger federer winning roland garros for the first time? Was it wrong of me to want Soderling to win, though? He did so well to get to the final (knocking out Nadal, for crying out loud!)....but okay, Rog did deserve it. Rafa will win it back next year.

Turns out while I was on leave, I was suspended. Meaning if I was here, I wouldn't have been able to use my card to do my job. Turns out big boss man thinks I made too many mistakes...(usually brought on by his impossible f**king rules)...and he suggested suspending my card. Trouble with that is, nobody told me about it. I guess my S**t of a boss went to the big guy in charge of the whole command and had a nice little chit chat about me and decided I needed to have my buying powers revoked for a week.
Does it make sense to suspend someone but not tell them about it? Not give them ANY opportunity to explain themselves or talk it through? And what the hell is the point in suspending someone when they are on FREAKIN VACATION!! What the hell good does that do? Now it's in my record that I have been suspended and I had ZERO chance to fix the problem before hand...
Screw this...they think I'm a horrid worker...well they are gonna get horrid worker believe you me.

Hang in there, DGD. Are you still in the Navy, or work for the Navy? I worked for a government agency at one time and they're not pleasant to work for. They're so d**m big so there's lots of kingdoms and empires you've got to battle. Do you have a grievance board or council? Go to them and complain if you do. I had to do that with a boss I had at one time. She was a micro-manager, a liar and just plain mean. She didn't last much longer after that. Turned out I wasn't the only one that complained about her.

Sorry to hear that DGD. Having escaped from a workplace toxic cesspool myself not so long ago you have my sympathy! Would have hoped that the armed services were free of that though, you do have bigger things to worry about!

One would think eh?
Anyway I guess my rant for today is that my best friend of like 5 years hasn't liked me the whole damn time. I got a little mad that she was saying "yay the pedophile died" in relation to the MJ news and it started this argument where she basically said the only reason I am defending him is because he "looks white"....basically calling me a racist. I mean I have some pretty strong oppinions about things but "the belief that race is a significant determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race" is NOT one of them. Supposedly I have been a raging racist with no social grace at all ever since she has known me. According to her I have been told numerous times that I was being innapropriate and rude....I think I would have remembered that...
I don't know anymore...

Pitzel = Remind me again, what exactly is their purpose in the food chain? I'm just not very fond of the little buggers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Not sure how to quote, sorry!
I'm not a fan of them, either, hate them in fact. But, bats eat 10 times their weight per day, it's their main food. I've read that the bats are dying for some reason and about 500,000 bats have died on the east coast alone. I hate to think of how many mosquitos are being left alive to suck the blood out of people and animals.

I have an amazing rave. I was very fortunate to get tix to see none other that Sir Paul McCartney play at CitiField (the old Shea Stadium in Queens NY), anyway he opened the new stadium and he was AMAZING!!!!! I am going again tonite (Saturday) and can't wait. My mom was listened to them while she was pregnant with me. Have been a fan ever since. He played for over 2 1/2 hours and has the energy of someone half his age. Bill Joel came in for one of the encores and they both blew the house down. My throat is completely shot from yelling and screaming. He told stories and reminisced about when the Beatles played Shea, played many Beatles songs and alot of solo stuff, the place rocked and there was much merriment. In the immortal words of the fab 4, .......a splendid time was guaranteed for all......to put it mildly.

Rants... (I'm sure if I took more time the list would be very long, but just someones to start with). I'll divide it into two lists: general and work - When people sound horns in their cars when you are all stuck in a traffic jam - That only annoys, it would not make the traffic jam disappear!!! - People sitting next to me on the train looking over my shoulder to read my book (I don't mean those who just look a moment to see what you are reading but those who really take their time to read!!) - People sitting near me at the cinema who "explain" the movie to their friend / partner: "Now he is going to..." "You'll see that this is going to give problems" "Oh! He is not going to die" "This means that..." - Here we always give two kisses when we meet someone, even when is not a close friend and we give two kisses too when we are introduced to someone (I am saying this because I think is different in different places: in France is three o four kisses, in other places you kiss friends but only shake hands when someone is introduced to you, and in someplaces you just say hello!). Kissing is ok for me (with close friends can be one kiss and a hug) but I can't stand men who meeting you for first time take you strongly by the waist and place their hand on your back (nearly on your...) in giving the two kisses... Hey! What made you think you were allowed to do that? - Relatives showing up at home without making a phone call before, specially Sunday morning (well not all relatives, I am thinking of two or three) I'll continue with the "general rants" another day. Just a few from work. Must say I am a teacher at secondary school,... that means teenagers!! - People who say.. "oh, great job, easy, many holidays". They seem to think that we only work while we are in class, or that when students take their holydays we also take them and forget about our group (Oh, no, we don't need to have meetings, we don't need to prepare our classes, we don't need to do paper work, we don't take new courses,...) - Parents who don't care about the education of their children or think we are the ones to teach them everything (manners are basically learned at home, we can do our best but familys must do their work to) - Older teachers who tell you "You'll see there's nothing you can do... it's the way it is" and smile at you as if you were a child only because you would like things to go better. - Homework written in other ink than blue or black (I am tired of reminding them, of asking nicely to use only those colours) A two pages essay in bright red!!! - When OBVIOUSLY the homework they are handing in is just a page found on the internet and printed (Do they really think I would not notice... ok, being lazy is something like a teenager's duty but, please... "copy&paste" is there for something) - Girls who walk a few steps behind their boyfriends and don't speak... Come on!! Wake up ladies!!! So many women fighting for decades for our rights and now you always stay behind a boy and low your head!!!! (I was so surprised to notice this when I started working with teenagers). However, I must say I love my work It made me feel good to post this!!!!!!!!!!

Ofelia - my hubby is a secondary school science teacher so i can empathise with you on all those points (i've been hearing them for 15 years now!!!). I was having drinks with some girlfriends a few weeks ago and the stupid boorish husband of the one whose house we were at, tried to start a conversation with me about why teachers should be paid less than nurses and police. I just shut him down on the spot!!!! I think he thought i was being rude but i just said that it was a completely pointless thing to argue about and the real question is why any of those professions should get paid half of what he was getting working a two week on, two week off job on a mine site!!!!

Numbat, I don't know if I feel relief or sadness that the situation of education is similar in other countries (On one hand it makes me think "ok, so it's not us, it's not our society, our educational system and our recent history it's a worldwide problem", but on the other hand I think "so if it is worldwide, how difficoult is to point out the reasons and to think of solutions"). In my view one of the main problems is that many people don't think how important education is. These days the medias are talking about the next year (we are having a new educational law and some things are changing) and if you look at the medias and the public discussion the main problem is the calendar, the holydays (it's true that here, in Spain, students have got very long summer holydays and only two weeks in Christmas and one week at Easter). I know it's a big problem for many families, as they don't have a place to leave their children while parents work at summer. But I can't help thinking that recently, a research has been done and the results show thap our country is at the bottom of the list of European Union countries in the results of students finishing primary school. And furthermore, it also shows that students finishing secondary school, have really little knowledge of basic things as grammar and reading skills (if it's so for our languages - some regions have two official languages - I prefer not to think about English or French). As a teacher, I can see that every year, students arrive with less knowledge of everything... but no, this problem is not in the public discussion... it seems that the main problem is to keep students more time at school, no matter what are they doing there!!! The consecuence is that our students leave secondary school and are not well prepared to continue their studies (that's why so many of them fail their first year at college) and obviously they don't have the skills that would increase their choices in the work market.
I know that teaching is not the hardest job in the world, and I don't have economic complains (well, I have them but they are not the most important) but really, nowadays we have to face many problems which are just increasing year after year because no one seems to look for a solution. But again,... I love my job, there are many difficoult moments, but the good ones are so good!!!
I'm sorry if this was too long...

ofelia, I am a part-time worker (NHS. UK..clerical not nursing tho.)but I am a full-time Mum 3 children ages 8, 10 &12 so I think that your job ,teaching, is the most important job you can have and you deserve every penny you get . because you mould the minds and characters of the next generation. We as parents and teachers should work together to teach our children about generosity of mind and spirit as well as the 3 Rs and not try to blame each other for whatever goes wrong as we seem to be doing here in U.K. Try to put it right instead. Sorry if this is a bit pious but I do feel strongly about this so keep up the good work Ofelia

I have the utmost respect and admiration for teachers especially in the middle to high school grades. Keep up the good work...our children need dedicated teachers like yourself. Pitzel

Absolutely. Education is the most powerful tool in the world and if we are to bring up future generations of intelligent and emotionally aware young people, there is nothing more important. Most people seem to agree with this yet the issues that Ofelia bought up regarding holidays and the undervaluing of teachers etc seem the same the world over. Governments and the community need to stop complaining and start practicing what they preach!!!!
(My three are 8, 9 and 11, Frannie!!!)
