I'm not sure about how much national coverage this has gotten but last night at one of the student centers on the VA Tech campus, a graduate student was murdered. She was having coffee with another student when that student pulled out what was described as a large kitchen knife, stabbed her and decapitated her in front of the other students there. Many of the first responders were the same ones that handled the shootings a couple of years ago. All the students, faculty, and staff were notified through email immediately afterwards that something had happened and advised to stay where they were if they were still on campus. A subsequent email gave them an "all clear". At least they know now that if something as massive as April 16th happens again, that particular security method is effective. I'm not a superstitious person, but it's like the campus is "cursed". About a year before the campus shootings, a Montgomery County deputy was shot and killed by an escaped convict who was hiding in the bushes on part of the campus, then the shootings, now this. I've lived in this area for almost 20 years and the biggest problem they used to have at Tech was the same as any other college--kids getting wasted and getting into trouble. Now they've had 34 people killed there in the last 3 years. I hope this is the last of the violence the school will have to deal with for a very, very, long time.

Damn....I hadn't heard of this, but that doesn't surprise me with all of the political hoopla. It does make you question things when you see those kind of stories.

Ohmygod, I hadn't heard about this either. I can't believe how many deaths there have been there in the last few years. Seems so out of character for what was a pretty quiet average town. You'd expect something like that in NYC where I'm from. One of my favorite poets, Nikki Giovanni, teaches English there. Totally bizarre. My heart goes out to the victim and family and all those who had to witness the horror.

I read this on the news wire today, simply awful. When will this insanity end?
My sympathies to her family and loved ones.

The insanity will never end. It's human nature.
