Mind another comment on tom cruise? Everywhere I've read about his role in Tropic Thunder, tour de force, it was bloody awful, vulgar and not funny to me at all. When I went to see it there was stunned silence in the theatre and no one was laughing. Just saw eyes wide shut again, kidman was great he was just tom "i'm smirking again" cruise. Don't understand his bankability either, slight talent at best, but who am I to judge?

well, you are the movie goer, you pay for your ticket, so you have a say. i so agree about your comment on eyes wide shut, kidman is good and he looks inadequate in comparison.

I only go to the movies if it's something I really want to see. Saw Eyes b/c of Kubrick, I've been an admirer for years. At $12 a pop in NYC I don't go as often as I'd like to. Thank goodness for netflix, and my library of DVD's.
The last movie I paid for was Benjamin Button and it was well worth the money. Brad Pitt is so good and Cate Blanchett good as always.

Ok, here's another person whose popularity confounds me--Larry the Cable Guy. No offense if anyone is a fan but I not only don't find him funny but I actually find some of his material offensive. He uses a deragatory racial term when talking about people from the mid-east which I won't repeat here because to me, it's as bad as the "n" word. He's not even from the south; he's from Nebraska and he fakes the accent and plays a broad, southern stereotype. What really makes me shake my head in despair is he's doing a sold-out show at the Roanoke Civic Center this month while the one place for theatrical productions and "cultural" events, Mill Mountain Theatre, was closed down recently due to a lack of funds and interest.

Ahhh I love Larry The Cable guy....Him and Ron White are hilarious! Not to mention Lisa Lampanelli...I love that woman. They're not for everyone obviously, but for us crude folks, they are damn good entertainment. And you can't really blame Larry for doing his show at one place instead of the other...he doesn't have the choice to keep a place open, especially in this day and age.

Lisa Lampanelli: can't stand her. Sorry, but I find her to be crass and overly vulgar, besides so downright insulting. I was never into Don Rickles either. People who have to terribly insult others are not funny to me... but then again with the Autism, there is much humour I don't get. However, I love Monty Python- especially the "Dead Parrot" and "Silly Walks" skits. Cleese is genuinely funny in my opinion no matter what he is involved in. The furthest I can go with crass is George Carlin (RIP) and he could even be a bit much for my taste at times. He was funny enough to make a joke about just about anything including Rice Krispies cereal. He was a gas in Dogma. too. I love that movie. However my favourite joke in the whole thing is not Carlin's character. It's the character of Azrael- the "holy bartender" joke. ... but I tend to really go for dark humour anyway.
Any way... Why I never got into show business professionally was the bullS**t (business rather than art focus). My brother Greg is right up there in Jimmy Page calibre when it comes to his guitar playing (no exxagerations here) but he was so fed up with the music business that although he is one of the best guitarists on the planet no one knows it. He just walked right out of the business and never went back.
My other brother Les is no longer in a band although he had done some recording long ago on an indie label. He now writes keyboard music he hopes to sell to the movie industry. Both brothers are quite old to be getting back to it now (53 and 59).
I must confess that I am quite disillusioned. Greg was my example and I too had dreams of being a rock star, but the business being what it is- no way. Then, I see people like Spears and I just shake my head in dismay. Is that what people really want these days?
I can't watch most of today's music videos. Sorry, but if people come to hear me sing and watch me perform, it isn't going to be because I wear skimpy clothing and make vulgar body maneuvers. I can shake my ass alright, but I wouldn't want to be known for it. Spears? Eegads!
As for actors: I so appreciate Rufus' work (at least as much as I have seen so far), but in a way, I hope he never becomes over-the-top famous to the point wherein he has no private life, little chance to do eccelectic work, getting mobbed all the time everywhere he goes. I don't know to what extent it has gone for him to this point, but I hope that whatever happens, he is truely happy. I know just from talking with my friend what a bit of fame can do because her husband can't go to a shopping mall and he and my friend can't go to see a movie together without renting out the theatre privately.
Anyway, I don't get why anyone would want to be over-the-top famous with the entertainment industry the way it is. Do it; have fun doing it; love it or leave it. But hell, if Rufus wants it, he should go for it! As long as he is really happy. That is all I can say.

somehow, with rufus not being a spring chicken, i doubt a sudden bout of celebrity would change him much. i would not like to be the paparazzi trying to get into his windows either. seems like a private person. woud be nice if his name was heard more often in movie theaters though. i kind of need to hear about future projects!
JIMMY PAGE? I THINK NOT!!!

JIMMY PAGE? I THINK NOT!!! Truely, my brother is THAT good. He is 53 and has been playing since he was a kid. Was teaching at around age 16. My whole family are that way: vocals and/or several instruments, each with a forte.

Why all the hate for Lisa? I know, not everyone has the mentality, but there is something hilarious about getting insulted by someone who insults themselves just as bad. Maybe I'm just depraved, but it's funny to me. She insulted me 3 times the last time I saw her. Loved every minute of it.

I guess I just like my comedy dark or somewhat silly or stuffy. The odd thing is that I love House. That character is cruel and I hate cruelty, yet I love House. Maybe it is because his character is insulting other characters so it is not so up front and personal as a live stage performance of stand up. Also with stand-up it is constant with no break, so to speak, whereas in a one-hour drama there is a lot to fill in the rest of the time and entertain in different ways other than crassness. Yet, even House can be a little over-the-top for me at times. Maybe I am too stuffy for my own good... that is when I am not being silly. LOL

i dont know that lisa you talk about, but i have to say that, if she is a stand up, i dont like a stand up who is too nice (boring) so i would probably be with GDG on this one.
and i love house too, the show and the character, must be the most intelligent stuff in tv drama these days.
which is a treat for me since i am a big time fan of hugh laurie, i keep plugging skits from his old british show with stephen fry, these two were as funny as monty python - and i love monty python.
i keep wondering too why people care so much for his "house" who is about the most hatable character ever. i was very skeptical when laurie took on that role, since he's played mostly funny airheads, to see him tackle a heavy drama role, seemed a bit much - but, hey, what can i tell you. when you've got it, you've got it.
since this is the "i dont get it" thread, though, i will have to end with something i dont get, and i dont get most sitcoms on the air these days. i like 30 rock and the office, that is about it, and then i dont even watch on a regular basis.
i find it harder and harder to find anything really funny these days - maybe i am REALLY getting old, or are people less funny?

Vittoria, I tried watching a recent special with her and found her absolutely awful and just not funny. I borrowed a co=worker's dvd of John Pinette, a very funny, clean comic. I hate those that think in order to be funny they need to lace their monoluges with constant profanity. I'm not a prude, but if you're funny their would be no need for the shock value. Anyway I never laughed so hard watching him.
I can't get into the US version of The Office, Ricky Gervais' version is so much better, and 30 Rock tends to run hot and cold for me, some weeks it's hysterical then others the humour just falls flat. Extras was a wonderful show that suprisingly was billed as a comedy, it was but with very dark undertones, Gervais' character was tragic to put it mildly. Worth viewing if it's in repeats or renting. Smart writing with no sophmoric laugh track.

Lisa Lampanelli...she's on Howard Stern alot and is good friends with Larry the Cable Guy. She's an insult comic. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Lampanelli What I don't get is why you have to be clean and politically correct to be talented. I guess if it's simply a matter of taste, then yeah, someone like Lisa probably isn't for everyone, just like I can't get into Carlos Mencia or Bill Cosby or Jason Alexander...they just aren't that funny to me, but I wouldn't say they weren't talented, just not for me. Plenty of people like them and Bill Cosby is pretty clean...I just don't find him all that funny.
