Alex Proyas says that there have been recent discussions about a sequel, and that he likes the idea of John Murdoch being corrupted by the power he has: Alex Proyas will be the first to admit that his film “Dark City,” which fizzled at the box office, took years to find its audience on DVD. Since its release in 1998, though, his story about a nightmare reality faced by an amnesiac trapped in a strange city has absorbed a cult following. Now, the director behind “Knowing” and “I, Robot” may actually get a chance to make a sequel.
“I always thought it would be intriguing to have Rufus [Sewell], who was the hero in the first one, be the bad guy,” Proyas told MTV News. “He should turn nasty because he’s got unlimited power. That’s something I’d like to explore.”
The ideas have surfaced since he originally wrote “Dark City.”
“I didn’t see it as anything other than the movie I made at the time,” he explained. But the attraction is definitely there for Proyas.
Whether or not the original cast, which also included Jennifer Connelly and Kiefer Sutherland, would be on board to do a follow would remain to be seen. According to Proyas, however, the gears are already turning.
“There have been some discussions fairly recently,” he said. “It’s had this shelf life and just lately it’s done well enough that there have been some discussions about a sequel.”moviesblog.mtv.com/2009/03/10/exclusive-alex-proyas-describes-how-he-would-treat-dark-city-sequel/

! Sounds like a great concept, too! I actually wondered how having God-like powers would affect Murdoch. I hope Proyas gets a chance to bring it to the big screen.

GE2: Thanks for the new info on a sequel to "Dark City". Great opportunity for Rufus. I just hope that his character does not remain through out the movie as the "baddie". I want to see Rufus as the good guy on the big screen !!!!

I've always wondered about that ending. It left the door open for a possible sequel. Perhaps Mr. S could be persuaded to do a sequel, esp. if Proyas was involved. And it would be nice for people to see him cast against type for a change. Oh, I would love to see this, and maybe this time the studio heads will market this movie properly as they should have done the first time.

i dont think i can picture "mr. s." doing a sequel, though. he seems to be the "been there, done that" kind of guy.
but, then again, dark city is one of the best things he's been in. would be fun to see what the more seasoned "mr.s" could bring to that project.
i guess DC2 would be even harder to finance than the first one was.
sounds to me like mr. proyas is daydreaming - in french, we would say that he is "shoveling clouds" = daydreaming big time.

Yes, I agree with that, Tip - however, he's also the sort of man who likes to do the unexpected, and if the script was good enough, he might even want to explore where those powers would take Murdoch. Do you think so? I was thinking it might be easier, especially if the star of a hit TV series was headlining (Rufus, that is, not Kiefer), and also given the high praise DC has received since its original release. Although he does say there have been discussions. Fingers crossed, say I.

well, keifer's presence certainly would not hurt. talking about "hurt", i 'd like william to be part of it too.
oh - i just remembered, he died in the movie, didn't he? well, its sci-fi, he can be brought back.
ok i will lend all my money towards financing of DC2 if william hurt is hired and ressuscitated. and rufus. and jennifer and keifer. that will be all of .... 27.46$. is that enough?

We've seen a darker side of him in Bless the Child, but that was rather cartoonish and one dimensional, in DC we've seen his vulnerability and isolation within the character of Murdoch, I think it would be fun to see him do it, but only if the script met his standards. I usually hate sequels b/c there a cheap cashing in on the original material, but this could prove quite interesting and fun to see.

I also don't want the studio execs to force Proyas to "dumb down" the movie like they did with the original. I'd rather not have a sequel if they do that and judging from the comments made by both Proyas and Rufus in the dvd extras for DC, I don't think they'd want to agree to doing that again either.
