Tell him to jump in a canal. We'll give him a push if he needs help. People have different opinions on what "porn" is. To me the nudity in Vinyan is not porn. "Soft porn", maybe, since a sex act was shown. But he focused just on the nudity and not the plot. There are many good movies that have nudity and sex scenes, but they're not porn (in my humble and somewhat Rufus-biased opinion).

"POINTLESS PORNOGRAPHY" what on earth is that all about. There may have been some gratuitous sex but that's not the point of the story, and if there were any such scenes they certainly did not make an impression on (soory Ruf) I'm sure he was fine. It's a dark truly depressing film and I found it a bit claustraphobic to say the least. Still a very strong performance by our green-eyed wonder and one that I won't soon forget.

I just finished watching Vinyan. A very depressing and disturbing film, especially his horrible death and his maniacal wife with the wild children in the very end. The only redeeming quality of the film is lots of Rufus and his superb acting. The intercourse scene was very graphic, but I don't call it pornography, it was a desperate man whose wife was dead to him and his needs. There was lots of nudity, but it had to do with the storyline, the slave trade and such going on. I'm emotionally spent after watching this movie, can't make myself watch it again, even with lots of Rufus in it.

There are two words critics use when they do not understand what they are watching: Pornography (alluding to any scene where the actors are making love or otherwise undressed) and dark (which means they do not understand the subject matter). I like the idea of pushing him into the canal in the event he won't jump himself.

Thanks to all you U.S fan girlies who took the trouble to tell me about Vinyan. I have pre-ordered it and expect it in Oct It sounds a gripping but not an easy, sunday afternoon film.Something Roofie could get his teeth into. I was not objecting to any so-called Porn but to the stupid and sloppy criticism of the Dutch reviewer which made me hopping mad. 2nd thoughts , the canal is too good for him

Stupid and sloppy criticism it was indeed. The above mentioned from Vinyan would be a very poor excuse as a pornographic scene! That was certainly not the intention, and was far from the result. In fact I found that this key scene was not the least bit sexy...which is really saying something considering WHO we had doing WHAT. No, it was a hauntingly sad but fairly well executed scene showing the culmination of Paul's frustration, loneliness and possibly resentfulness too--the near nadir (the real pit comes later) of a disintegrating relationship/life.

having seen vinyan online i had to wait and think about it before posting and am still thinking in his interview roofie said the "suits"didn't know which genre to put it in".. No, its not horror or thriller .It's a love story , of 2 loves .... the love of a woman for her child and of a man for his wife . there's no gratuitous gore or sex anything there is there because it's necessary, It's a beautifully filmed study of despair and descent into insanity and degradation ... skin crawling eeriness. No, not easy. The acting was incredible ... everyone down to the smallest parts . This is the first of Rufus's work that I have seen where his acting has outshone his looks.Usually no matter how good he is you are always aware how beautiful he is. not here. He is Paul .. an agonised , desperate man. Yes ,perhaps you know how it will end but perhaps thar is the horrifying part of it. No, it's not feelgood or even enjoyable , if you want that go watch "Mama Mia". If the suits want to make megabucks ,let them put Tom Hanks in a Dan Brown book adaptation .I can't see Tom making this or even being capable of it. If you want to see suberb cinema and an actor at the height of his not inconsiderable powers ,this is the one to see. As someone said on Simon Mayo's show , this is a modern day classic . You have every right to be proud Rufus.

My fifteen soon to be sixteen nephew called in today. We live quite near his school so he often calls in for Coke and biscuits and today brought a cousin (from the other side) . They are both doing Drama for gcse They spotted my copy of Vinyan and asked to borrow it . not sure whether my brother would allow it so said no ...wasn't going to let it out anyway... don't know if I would get it back!!! Anyway the point of all this was they both had seen it and absolutely raved about it. How they saw it, I don't know as I didn't think it had been on in the multiplexes in the UK and they are both under 18.. They both discussed it at length in a sensible critical way and said most of the lads in their class thought it brilliant. So it looks as though this could become a classic arthouse film ...by word of mouth. No thanks to the film distributors who seem to prefer to have the plexes empty most of the time than take a chance on something intelligent

That's really interesting Frannie. I do think it's fascinating to get other viewpoints from people of different vintages, sexes and preferences from our own (given that i think we are a remarkably homogenous group!!!). Interesting that your nephew and his peer group appear to like this movie more than some on this board.
Vinyan remains one of my favourite films because of exactly that reason though - it's interesting, a little bit out there, thought provoking etc etc - everything that we've talked about before.
But one thing that struck me above all else last time i watched it was the very naturalness of Rufus's acting in this. He obviously acts his absolute ass off to cover the difficult material in this movie, but he does it in a way that has you totally believing that he is Paul. Maybe it was that he felt that he could indeed be Paul - a middle aged man with a son - so didn't feel the need to try to be any one other than himself. His body language is so natural, his responses and expressions are so natural and his voice, his voice is the closest to his natural one that i think i've heard in any movie - and if you have any doubts as to what i'm saying, watch the argument in the taxi scene again.
Yes it's a difficult subject, yes it takes some odd turns, yes there's sex, yes there's ugliness - but i think if people avoid watching this because of those things, then they're missing out on one of his very, very best performances.
< sits back, sighs and waits for everyone to start arguing with her a la IASL!!! >

As soon as I read "the closest to his natural one", that's exactly the scene I was thinking of, Numbat! I won't be arguing with you! I love his performance in this. I wonder if it helped that it was filmed sequentially, so it was easier to stay in the right frame of mind for whatever part in the story they had reached, and therefore he could relax a bit more? Whatever, although it wasn't the easiest of films to watch, he was excellent in it. I have to say, though..... ****SPOILERS****......I never thought I'd see him act an UNsexy sex scene! As we have said in a PM, VERY authentic....err......noises (you KNOW what I mean ), but not at all romantic or sensual. I think what Frannie has said about her nephew and his cousin's reactions, and the fact it sounds as if this could become an arthouse classic, is spot on. What will be interesting is if, once Rufus gets the recognition he deserves, critics and the public re-visit his earlier films - I wonder if their views on films like this will change?

Yay GE2, i don't really like arguing. It upsets my timid marsupial sensibilities Yeah, well we're still waiting for that aren't we! Don't you sometimes feel that he's just a great big mystery that only we understand? For the life of me i don't get it! And the sex scene, well, i wasn't going to mention it but seeing as you bought it up GE2, i have to admit that it certainly isn't romantic or sensual or even nice, but i still think it's sexy But maybe that's just me! (and for whatever anyone's personal opinion is on the subject of whether it's sexy or not sexy - and it truly is a personal opinion - i think we can all agree that it is a magnificent piece of voice work. And i mean that in all seriousness. The visual element is almost redundant because the power really is in the aural picture) I don't suppose i could post those screencaps now? ?
