Americans suffer through many commercial breaks while watching network TV. I had mentioned earlier on this page about the amount of commercial time while watching KJ. It seemed even MORE excessive than usual! Could be that I was tired and it was past my bedtime.

I agree, Frannie and Kygal. The amount of commercial time was just awful. (We'll be able to tell how bad when we see the running time on the DVDs, but I'm sure it was more than usual.) I also had it recorded for fast forwarding. Like Frannie, I was still jarred every time they went from some quiet or dramatic moment in KJ to a very loud, silly commercial. It seemed like they cut the time between film and commercial to nanoseconds. It absolutely destroyed much of the beauty of the production, to me, because there was never any warning--just an abrupt, instantaneous switch from Nazareth to someone's modern kitchen or car dealership. (Frannie, when I was growing up, there were commercial breaks, but they were always on the quarter hour, and lasted a few minutes each time. Now they vary; sometimes they'll run the first 20 minutes of a program without any break and then have breaks every 5 or 10 minutes after that or have a few 7 or 8 minute breaks. And the networks seem to run their breaks on different schedules, in an effort to keep us from changing the channel. (However, they will never defeat my husband and his quick-draw remote! ) As for the show itself, I thought the actors were superb. (Probably the only complaint about the acting is one I also saw in a few reviews. Kelsey Grammar as Herod was a little hammy and hard to take seriously.) And ditto again, Frannie--the costumes and sets were amazing. They seemed very realistic. I also liked the storyline--the politics of the time. Very interesting. The script did a good job of showing the concerns of someone like Caiaphas, who could have been concerned about both the threat to his own power and the potential "threat to order" as he put it. Naturally, Rufus did a wonderful job of portraying all the nuances of the character. Not a cardboard villain at all. Overall, a good production that I think I'll enjoy more on DVD.

Overall, a good production that I think I'll enjoy more on DVD. Definitely Rue - this is one production that will improve 100% as a DVD even it there aren't any extras. As for the ad issue: as annoying the ads are on American network TV, the ones on the cable channels are worse. I often watch network TV shows on my computer during my lunch hour and those "one hour" network shows are always played out in 42 to 43 minutes. It's all a matter of economics, those cable channels owned by networks who are in turned owned by mega corporations can afford fewer ads. Those channels, like NG, who aren't owned by mega corporations need the ad money. And considering the excellent production values and the high class talent, I'm thinking KJ cost a pretty penny to produce. All that said, like Rue and Frannie, I am grateful that I recorded KJ to watch rather than watching it live. Even with fast=forwarding the breaks were jarring. The production itself was wonderful. Good performances all around (Kelsey Grammar excepted!) and as has been noted, the sets and costumes were spot on. Frannie, it's funny you mentioned the "sparkling white robes" as one professional reviewer mentioned that it was nice to see that Jesus was not a blue-eyed blond!

Who wants to see a sneaky photo? It comes from Judas. Of course. Joe Doyle posted this picture many moons ago but he didn't add the name of that non-posing guy to the caption - he let us discover Rufus ourselves. Heureka! iconosquare.com/p/824464231131818560_294507089Rufus's dromedary looked into the camera, but Rufus busied himself with his own gadget.
