I just got back from seeing the new "Star Trek" movie and it is amazing! Not just a great "Star Trek" film but a great movie, period! I've been a Trekker most of my life and I'll admit when I first heard about this movie, I had my doubts. While I wasn't one of those fans who decided to hate the movie before a single frame had been shot, I was concerned about how the characters were going to be treated. JJ Abrams did an incredible job keeping the essence of the original characters while adding more to their personalities and backstory. Zachary Quinto is especially good as Mr. Spock; besides the uncanny physical resemblence to Leonard Nimoy, he portrays Spock's human/Vulcan conflict beautifully. I've never seen "Heros" but after watching his performance in this movie, I may have to rent the last couple of seasons of the show so I can start getting into it. Chris Pine adds a depth to Kirk that I never felt from Shatner and Karl Urban is so dead-on in his delivery as McCoy it felt like I was watching a young DeForrest Kelly. I wish I could remember her name but the actress who plays Uhura is stunning and just as smart and even tougher than the original. Simon Peg and John Cho are also great as Scotty and Sulu, although I wish both had more screen time. Again, I can't remember the actor's name, but the young man who played Chekov, the "baby" of the crew, was great and had a very sweet charm about him, almost like a puppy who wants to prove he can hang with the "big dogs".
The movie also inspired a very funny bit on this past week's "Saturday Night Live". Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy were on "Late Night with Jimmy Kimmel" Friday and Leonard said something about being on SNL. Jimmy said, "I can make that happen" and sure enough he did! If you can find the sketch on YouTube, I recommend watching it! It was part of the SNL News and also includes Chris Pine.
If this movie is playing near you, go see it! It's the first movie in a long time that sent chills down my spine and gave me goosebumps!
