Oh, so he'd play a cuckolded husband again? Is that a good move for a man who doesn't want to be type-cast?

Oh boy, if he stopped playing cuckolds, he'd be out of work... seriously, I actually think if he got the girl something catastrophic would happen. He seems to pick them for it. It's phenomenal how such an appealing man gets dumped so frequently.

He's got to be the most dumped gorgeous man out there (not to mention talented)! I am just glad to see him working and in front of us on 12 ft. screens...................

We're discussing film roles. I don't think you can sneer cattily at a fictional character.

I mean there are roles where he gets the girl: The Honest Courtesan In a Savage Land Middlemarch Dark City Taming of the Shrew... Rock 'n' Roll (hope I'm not giving anything away there for those who haven't seen it.) But it seems like the ones where he gets dumped are more inexplicably freqeuent.

But it seems like the ones where he gets dumped are more inexplicably freqeuent. Well, I'd guess from the little I know about Rufus and from the few interviews that I've read that he's drawn more to the character parts, rather than the "leading man" parts. And if you aren't the leading man, you generally won't get the girl. I mean, he was the lead in all the ones you listed where he gets the girl, right? But as we know, the lead character in a movie isn't always the most interesting part, and that's probably why he likes the parts where he doesn't get the girl.

While on the subject of things that seem to happen repeatedly to the characters Rufus plays, has anyone else ever counted the number of times he is killed off one way or another? I mean seriously, I counted 9 or 10 deaths without even really trying. Just thought it was a little freaky.......

Maxx, you got me started wondering about the number of roles where he got dumped and I just did a count. I've come up with: Tristan + Isolde Carrington The Illusionist The Woodlanders In Zorro, A Knight's Tale, and Martha, Meet FDL he didn't actually have the girl in the first place, so maybe that doesn't count? And in Uncorked she dumped him at about the same time he found someone else, so maybe that doesn't count either. I've come up with four clear "dumps." Have I missed any? So, maybe his track record isn't so very bad. ;D

Well he definitely "had" the girl in Illuminata, lost her her too, though it didn't seem to faze him.
He didn't have & didn't get the girl in Victory, but he... woops, almost posted a spoiler.... He didn't get the girl in Dirty weekend, but boy she got him! In Extreme Ops like Uncorked he lost one, got one. I think you're right 7Sis they cancel each other out.
I just add one to your 4 making it 5 clear dumps so far....
Anyone else??

The Woodlanders is really only a semi dump - she didnt want to have dumped him in the end.
He got sort of dumped in Helen of Troy - even if she didnt actually dump him, she made her meaning clear!

I don't think he gives a toot whether he gets the girl or not - he stated himself that he does not see himself as a romantic lead. He wants unlimited variety and the challenge of characters that are absolutely dissimilar and most especially, characters that one would not think he could do. He is seeking that impossible role to command.

He is seeking that impossible role to command. I think we all can agree that he doesn't care whether he gets the girl or not, it was just a bit of interesting trivia, doing a count of the times he's been the "dumper" or the "dumpee" or the one who gets the girl! I've never seen "Victory" or "Dirty Weekend," so I didn't know about those, and I'd forgotten about the girlfriend in "Extreme Ops." And I agree "The Woodlanders" is only a semi-dump and "Helen of Troy" is....something else. So, that makes it, what, 4 1/2 clear cases of "dumpee" versus 6 roles of getting the girl? I expected it to work out the other way, but so far he's ahead! And has he ever been the "dumper" in a role? I can't think of one right now.
