Now there's an interesting thought, Kitty!
How about the Mickey Rourke part in 9 1/2 Weeks?

Also, the Apostle Paul. Not a bad idea! Another of those ambivalent characters.

I've just finished re-reading "Wives and Daughters" and if ever there is another remake of it, I think Rufus would be perfect in the role of Mr. Gibson, Molly's father. He's a gentle character, but I love his sarcasm towards his wife and how much he loves his daughter and wants the best for her. There's a really lovely bond between them and I think it would be something different for Rufus (despite it being yet again, another period piece).

really love the movie "Ryan's daughter" which played in the original 1916 during the World War.... I can imagine very well, Rufus could play the role of the British Major Randolph Doryan who's fallen in love to the married daughter of Thomas Ryan. The scenery in Ireland on the Dingle Pennisula was perfect... I've been there in 1993 and fallen in love to this area.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan%27s_Daughter

While I was away I watched DVDs of 2 old films I thought Rufus would be great in.
The first is 'Becket' with Richard Burton as Becket and Peter O'Toole as Henry II. At first I thought Rufus would be magnificent as Becket but as the film continued, I could see him being equally wonderful as the king.
The second film was another O'Toole film. A comedy this time, a light frothy Cary Grant style one.
'How to Steal a Million.' Peter's co-star was Audrey Hepburn. I think that the perfect partner for Rufus in this is Shrley Henderson.

Seeing Rufus in black and white really makes me want him to remake one of those old movies. Still pushing for Bring Up Baby, or any Cary Grant film.

Also, Thomas Lynley in something Elizabeth George wrote (any single book about the aristocratic British detective, or a "compilation." Lynley needs to unbend a little, but Rufus as a British aristocrat is yummy and he could find that special touch to make him both clever, sophisticated, slightly reserved but hugely desirable. Just browsed through the earlier entries in this thread and wondered how I could have missed this suggestion - having been a Lynley & Havers fan for over 15 years. (From the description in the books, I had Rufus down for the Simon St. James part when I read the latest George novels, Lynley being described as blond and dark-eyed while Simon has unruly black hair and somewhat sharp features, but of course Rufus would be perfect for the aristocratic detective, too.)

Well, at another site there has been a great deal of debate over the actor to play Mance Rayder, a charismatic leader in George RR Martins HBO series 'Game of Thrones' ... Mance is a bit of a rebel, a bad boy with a heart of gold and a magnetic leader who easily compels his chaotic followers to attack their far more organized opposition in a fantastic medieval environment ...

Mance sounds like a good part for Rufus - I could just see him in that role - I presume we would have to see a bit of chest hair too, or perhaps an oiled torso;D Just kidding! I think Rufus would be great as Mance as he sounds like a complex character - Rufus could bring even more depth to a role like that.

Well ---- Mance is in a frozen wilderness...So OF COURSE oiled torsos and exposed chest hair are quite natural!
How well does RS sing?
Mance sings and plays a harp and a lute - Old Folk songs mostly. Mance is quite tough and RS certainly can manage the charisma.

SIGH
It may be too late... HBO will be filming the 3rd season soon and the character is an important character in the third book and and through part of the fourth and fifth books ...I don't know if RS would want to commit to this series based on some wonderful but very complicated books - I gather he's tired of costume dramas...
I have also heard that HBO will be breaking the third book into two parts ...So maybe hope is not lost.

I do know that RS is tired of costume dramas but he'd be great in a film version of any of the Marcus Didius Falco crime novels (set in the reign of Tiberius) ... So funny so sexy ...
Hmmmm..... sounds like Zen...
