I'm hoping now that I'm armed with all your reviews and information.........I can see this film and get more out of it with my first viewing! Of course I'll have to see it several times to get the full effect..........but at least, hopefully, I won't sit there saying "Wha???"

Heh. That happens to me often. I'll watch a movie and then be like 'huh?' then have to ask people what happened. Sometimes it's really obvious and I don't get it, but other times people don't get what happened either.

I like it better when others don't get it either!!!! I hate being the "dummy" when it comes to a film!

I've said this before, but thought I'd repeat it here to see what everyone else thinks.
I'm curious about Robbie Fay...he's a bit of an enigma. Ostensibly a typical 'lad', he also seems to have more about him, intellectually and emotionally. His friendship with Alfred clearly goes beyond just 'getting along with' the person with whom he shares his work day; he takes the piss out of Alfred and his poetry, but then calls for a particular one to be recited; and he's both insightful and curious about Alfred's friendship with his new Salome.
Up to the snooker scene, I thought Robbie probably suspected Alfred's affections, but wasn't disturbed by them and so had chosen to say nothing (in itself an unusual reaction for a lad of that time). But watching that scene, I couldn't make up my mind if Robbie was teasing Alfred or coming on to him. I certainly don't think he's unaware of the affect he's having on his friend.
It's one of those things that probably wasn't on the page, but in the performance. I'd love to ask Rufus what he intended when he played that scene.
...And I love the way Robbie eats his sandwiches!

Hmmm... this I have to see! I found a place that has AMONI for rent, but the soonest I can get it is Monday (if it's been returned on time) . Pen

I finally watched this film and I found it very sweet! I loved Albert Finney! With the comments on it, I admit I thought Rufus would be in it much more than he was, but I did enjoy his role. Robbie was a great character. I agree with reveuse that Robbie has more going on than we are allowed to really see. My opinion on his relationship with Alfred is that he knew how Alfred felt for him, but did not hold that against him. As he says there toward the end, "You're me pal". I didn't see him leading Alfed on at all, but then, I've only seen it once.........another viewing might change my perspective on that! I loved the bar/snooker scene!
Ok.......how does he eat his sandwiches? I even rewound to look again........what did I miss? LOL

I loved this film! I couldn't rewind to see the sandwich-eating part (the rewind on my VCR is cranky) so I'll have to get the DVD. Finney was excellent! I was expecting a very depressing ending and was glad when things didn't turn out that way. Loved seeing Robbie come back at the end!

It's just that he eats them with such...gusto! I love the way Ruf adds little details like this, things you can savour (pun intended) when he's not speaking. And food seems to be a favourite. Remember the cafe scene in TOTS, the enthusiasm with which he sops up his beans 'n eggs with that morsel of bread and then oh, so thoughtfully (and suggestively ) sucks each fingertip clean? Priceless.

And yes, I did laugh at that scene in TOTS...........it was almost like he hadn't eaten in a week! Too funny! Michelle
