Nigel Hawthorne was so good in this, the wise old sage. Yes it does have it's faults but there are more positives than not.

I absolutely love this movie! And it was such a striking difference of characters in this and in HOT. I watched HOT and then Uncorked, both via YouTube. Rufus' range of expression just blows my mind every movie I see and to go from watching Aggie to Ross in one night- what a shocking difference. Both very sexy too in thier own ways.
This movie, is warm, funny and yet deeply serious on a philosophical level. The music vid parts were too lengthy mind you... but oh that scene with Mr Tang on guitar and Rufus holding back laughter. Priceless! I laughed so hard, my neighbours could have thought I am crazier than they might already suspect! LOL! And that guitar piece that Rufus was quite nicely faking- gorgeous piece of music. I can listen to that over and over.

I just had to watch this again! I so love this movie! Tears were welling up in my eyes as I was laughing so hard at Mr Tang's little tune. The green tea smoothie and handy straw... the veggies shaped like a ham.... Ross getting all bent out of shape on occassion and yet so tender at times and lovingly affectionate that it all makes me want to love him, squeeze him, and take him home. I must say, that lad sure could be blunt and nasty, but at least something can be said for such honesty in expression. I am moved by how genuine this character is. Kendell was such a silly woman for letting him go like that. Dreamers can be so beautiful.

I'm with you, Vittoria. This movie is such a spirit-lifter!
I adore all the Mr Tang scenes. What a scene-stealer that actor is!
I also love Ross's more sarcastic side to balance his overall sweetness. Like when Uncle Cullen is on the roof at the beginning "You're kind of lacking in logic skills, aren't you." (Oh, how I long to use that sentence in my daily life!) Or, "You're not the bloody Dalai Lama. You're just a nutjob on top of a plexiglass pillar!" (Can you tell I've watched it enough to quote the whole thing verbatim?)
Great, great movie.

Thusly, I have added my little blurb to the left. <<<<<<< Oh... so many conversations have gone like the Cullen/Ross convo between myself and those who just don't "get it". It is so cool to see it all played out on film. I relate all too well to it.

So what i came here for today, before i got involved in Games with some other naughty, naughty girls, was to talk about Higher Love.
Now plenty has been said already, so i don't have to write much (everyone breathes a collective sigh of relief) but i needed to say a little something!!!
Firstly, this movie arrived after i'd been sobbing for several days watching The Woodlanders (i watched it over and over but the ending was always the same!!!!). So imagine my delight when i watched this warm, funny, HAPPY story and i guess my perspective will always be coloured by that timing. I laughed and laughed and laughed - what a joy!!!
Things i liked about it: - There was so much Rufus - He was really funny & loveable & confused all the time - He dressed really badly - He said really awful things to everyone - He did really stupid things - His hair was messy & in his eyes, & he banged on the ground with a baseball bat - He got to kiss the girl (well 2 actually), although unfortunately kept his clothes on - There was so much Rufus
There were some other things i liked - Nigel Hawthorne was really good, like a hippy version of Sir Humphrey. I quite enjoyed Minnie Driver's role especially when she called Uncle Cullen a "presumptious old git" and i was kind of happy when she went back to Tom because Ross got to be with Laurie, the girl with the old soul, who had been sent to teach him. Of course Mr Tang was a delight, as was the housekeeper who never said a word but made tofu in the shape of a ham, and Paul was gentle & lovely. The scenery & the farm were gorgeous although i didn't quite understand why this eccentric English family had a farm in the US.
Now i think i've been watching too many movies when i say that i didn't think the editing was very good. It seemed a little clumsy with cuts to different angles when the continuing shot would have been better. Funnily enough, the ones that annoyed me most were the shots when Ross was kissing Kendal in the chair, when Laurie was kissing Ross on the face before the concert (no, i didn't ONLY watch the kissing scenes) & when Ross went up the pillar to talk to Cullen.
Aside from that though, i really loved the message of the film. I'm kind of doing a bit of pillar sitting myself - rushed around for years, working, building a career, studying, getting married, travelling, renovating, being pregnant (3 babies in 3 years), breastfeeding, playgroup, preschool, all that. Now they're all at school full time but i haven't gone back to my career because i've come to realise that it's all a crock of sh** really. We all need to work to earn & if you can find what you REALLY want to do with your life then that's great, but this line that we've been fed about being the superwoman and having it all just results in us feeling guilty most of the time. Mothers who work full time feel guilty about not being there for their kids, those who stay at home feel guilty about not contibuting to the family finances and being seen to be lazy, & those who try to work parttime & be a fulltime/parttime mum just end up being pulled in all directions!!! So we can't win as far as i can see.
So, i've decided to sit upon my virtual pillar, survey the landscape and try & work out what i really want to do - at the moment i want to be there for my kids because they are "ours" for such a short time before they leave to make their own way in the world. So i guess i'm a soccer mum for now, but later, who knows. And i know it sounds corny, but for as much fun as we have here, i think the things we talk about, that we learn from Rufus's work, make us more thoughtful people.
And as we will someday come to realise, Uncle Cullen knew, in his wisdom borne of 72 years on this earth, that in the end, the only thing that matters - is love.

Another excellent review, numbat. I already went on and on about why I love this movie so much, but I will happily add your list to mine. Great, points, all of them.
And Tipou's heart grew three sizes that day! [/Grinch reference]

That is a very good review numbat. I agree, in the end, the film is all about love and understanding; Uncle Cullen was guiding Ross all the while until he understood. A lovely film and so much of beautiful Rufus. The guitar scene always brings tears to my eyes. I know he's not really playing it but he acts it so well and I think the piece of music is really wonderful.

Excellent review, Numbat! How timely, too! I did a search for Rufus on my DVR last night and came across At Sachem Farm playing on The Movie Channel. So I tuned in for a bit (in time to see him climb the pillar intending to murder Uncle Cullen!). I had seen the movie a year or so ago and loved Rufus in it, but wasn't too crazy about the movie overall. I'm not sure why, but I just didn't care for it. Last night, however, I found myself really, really enjoying the film. So, I'm going to search the DVR again and record the whole movie so I can see it again from start to finish.

Some movies are like that aren't they Judy. The first time i watched Illuminata i thought it was a bit odd & full of strange people, but since i've watched it a few times i totally get it (and love it) now. Mmmmmm, i must go over to that thread and say a few words when i get some time. But i am so excited because my package from Amazon UK has just arrived so i had to pop on here quickly to tell everyone (because i'm sure you all wanted to know, LOL!!!!!) I AM BESIDE MYSELF - I have Charles II, Helen of Troy, Dangerous Beauty, Dirty Weekend, Carrington, When Martha etc, & Middlemarch!!! Only problem is i'm flat out at the moment (that's flat out like a lizard drinking for bandicoot & quoll!!), er, busy, so i need to get on and finish these stupid accounts (who in their right mind volunteers to be the treasurer for the school P&C (PTA) ?). Then i will be in Roofie heaven & may never ever return!!!!

Oooh, Numbat! What a treat you have in store for you! Use all of those wonderful Rufus movies as incentive to get your work done quickly. Hmmm. Charles II. I need to watch that again very, very soon.
