I have just seen this, and I love, love, LOVED it!!!! It's now my new second favourite role of Rufe's (Charles II will never be supplanted). Loved the kissy-kissy start with Minnie Driver - although it took me a while to get past that (love that rewind button). Don't they work well together? Would like to see them paired together again in something, as I felt there was a real spark between them. I also loved all his scenes with Nigel Hawthorne - who was one of my favourite actors anyway (anyone else see and love "Yes Minister"?), and who had such a sense of fun and humility in this film. This is such a gem of a film, and Rufus was so...comfortable as Ross, looked great (as always), and was in virtually every scene - what more could a Rufaholic want?! (And, boy, did he look hot in specs! ) If you haven't already seen it, then beg, steal or borrow it, because it's just fabulous!

This is one of my favourite pick me up movies too - I watch it whenever I need a bit of a self esteem boost and to get back to what is really important in life!

A lot of people really don't like this one, but I loved it too! I thought it was so sweet and lovely! I agree, Nigel Hawthorne was fantastic!
It's good to see others liked this great little film! Michelle

I didn't care for this movie, but I sure did enjoy watching Rufus in it. I loved the ending too! How in the world, could Minnie choose that other bozo over Rufus? There was no comparison! I kept thinking "is she blind?!"

Probably because she couldn't control Ross and he did what she wanted regardless of her advice at great expense and he wouldn't shut up. The other guy did not speak and left her - she probably couldn't handle the rejection making her want him more.

It's one of my favorites too, GE2. I like it because it's a role that Rufus has never even come close to repeating... but as I think of it, there is a bit of Ross in Jan. I can't say I'd like to see him do a lot of this sort of thing, but this one really makes me smile. I'm surprised it hasn't launched him into RomCom Hell, he's so awfully good at it.

... but as I think of it, there is a bit of Ross in Jan. Hey, maxx! If someone else said that, you'd be asking for an explanation of that comment - come on, girl, elaborate, please!! LOL And you said you don't like romcoms....

... but as I think of it, there is a bit of Ross in Jan. Hey, maxx! If someone else said that, you'd be asking for an explanation of that comment - come on, girl, elaborate, please!! LOL And you said you don't like romcoms.... Oh boy, you've asked me to talk about acting... I think I bore people to tears when I do that, but okay, here goes... I can forgive this one because I like Rufus so much in it. It's not my favorite role for him but he has a sweet endearing guileless charm that it's difficult to resist. I love his wide-eyed innocence and his sweet nature--some of that is in Jan. I like the way he persists and endures--a lot of that is in Jan. Jan is, of course, a much more complex character than Ross borne of many more years of experience as an actor and the difference in what's written on the page. He gives a really fantastic and honest performance in this one... no surprise as he specializes in honesty in his roles. His rising frustration with his uncle is executed beautifully. There are times when he's just trying to hurt him to get through--something real people do all the time. He has great devotion to Kendal even though he knows just as well as she does that they don't belong together. The scenes between Ross and Kendal are lovely in that anyone who has ever been involved in a relationship can recognize themselves in them. I love the guy who climbs the pillar to push his uncle off and then comes to his senses. That scene amazes me. Nothing happens. He just realizes he's out of control and his entire face changes from murderous to... well... Ross. Amazing transformation. Beautiful, subtle, intelligent. As always I like the choices he makes. Lying on the ground near the mine in frustration, twisting the snot out of the pillows on the sofa that looks out into the garden, tripping as he's chasing his uncle while telling him he's making a fool of himself, frustration so fierce he wants to hit his uncle, sharing a chair with Kendal in the 'give us a kiss' scene, laughing at Mr. Tang and trying to hide it as if someone won't notice--some of them are not original but he always manages to give them a fresh twist so we see them with a new eye. I like the theme that he's given something up that he's really gifted at because he's afraid--people do that all the time in life. I think perhaps it's a theme near and dear to all of us. I think maybe it's near and dear to Rufus too. And I just plain like the message that if everything you do fails maybe you aren't doing the right thing... Everyone could take a lesson from this picture. It's not your usual drippy no purpose/no performance romcom.

I for one enjoy your commentaries. I like the fact that you articulate those salient points I'd like to make but cannot.
Ross climbing the pillar with blood in his eye is probably my favorite scene in this movie, though you've touched upon all the best ones. This role is overall my favorite to date, never having seen him on stage.

This role is overall my favorite to date, never having seen him on stage. "Favorite" is a tough concept for me. I can probably tell you my least favorite, but most all of them have something that attracts me and interests me. I think a lot of other people might pick TotS. Depends on the day you ask me...

I think that Petruchio is definitely a role in which Rufus was able to showcase his considerable talent. He also really seemed to enjoy himself which was so delightfully conveyed to the audience.
However having been married for over 7 years to my own Petruchio, I found myself less charmed than I may have otherwise been. In the long run these eccentricities easily become selfishly indulgent. While I very much enjoyed TOTS because of personal prejudice it will never be my favorite.

Maxx, I knew you'd come up with the goods! Thank you for your thoughts - not boring at all, and I only prompted because you would have!! I completely endorse all you say about this - and the scenes you mention are among my favourites. Especially that scene when he was laughing at Mr Tang behind his fingers (and his face earlier when he handed Mr Tang that gross green "smoothie" was priceless, too). Don't recall the snot and pillows scene, though...oh dear, does this mean I'll have to watch it again? And Ree, I have gone out with a Petruchio type in the past, and endearment didn't last long! So I do know what you mean. GE2

I think Uncorked and Cold Comfort Farm should be sold together with a name like "The Emotional Fix-It Pak"!

In the end I managed to get a copy of this film and recently I'm FINALLY watching it. He's looking SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO gorgeous. I'm happy, happy, happy for having the chance watching it at long last!!!
BTW: Does anyone know if he's really playing the guitar himself???

BTW: Does anyone know if he's really playing the guitar himself??? No, that's not him actually playing. He sings and plays the piano and drums, but not the guitar. It does look realistic though, doesn't it? G xo
