Thanks for verifying what I thought I remembered reading elsewhere. He did do a very good job of giving the impression that he can play the guitar.

I love the pillar scene as well. Two other scenes that I just enjoy include his bringing the Tea Smoothie to Mr. Tang who happens to carry his own straw - I love Ross's bewildment in his face and his response. As well, I love when he is reprimanding Uncle Cullen and remarks something along the lines of 'aren't you embarrassed that you have been living off your parents money all your life - you are 75 years old, when are you going to get a real job'. I love this scene.
But you are right, his performance is so real it is as though he is living Ross not acting Ross - Rufus amazes me with his brilliance.

This is what amazes me about Rufus.......how much he just melds into his characters......BECOMES his characters. As I have always maintained, during a Rufus film........you don't feel like you are watching Rufus play someone, you feel as if he IS that someone!

I love this scene. I love this movie but not so much that scene. Ross lives off his uncle's cash, what is he telling him off for?? I've heard other people say that and I'm not so certain. Ross gives a very detailed list of the types of jobs he's tried and failed at. Some of them are real jobs like being a broker and others are fly by night schemes like the manganese mine. I'm not clear that he has done anything but retreat to safety when his last job failed. People do it all the time. However, he does plan to mortgage the farm to buy the mine. Again, I'm not clear on what is going on here because they never really explain it. Did the farm once belong to Ross' parents? His brother lives there too. Was it something his grandparents left and passes on to Ross and his brother when his Uncle dies? If it is, it's his as well... So I'm not so harsh to judge Ross. I love the frustration that Rufus expresses in this film. It's so real. He's at his wits end and he's being thwarted at every turn. He's really a drowning man catching any little piece of driftwood that floats by. One of my favorite scenes is the one where he tells his Uncle just to go away. No one wants him there any way. He's so upset and out of control it's just brilliant. This is another of his seemingly effortless performances that must have been so carefully planned it's frightening. He is the picture of a living breathing person trapped in his situation. I can't say enough how much I love this film. It continues to be one of my very favorites.

Okay, I have to know where this movie was filmed. Forgive me, but as a native Angelino, I sometimes get obsessed about finding filming locations from movie I really like. Especially if the scenery is really cool, like it is in this movie.
I know IMDB says it was filmed in Simi Valley, but if you live in Southern California, you know that the Simi Valley is a HUGE area. I've actually been in areas of the Simi Valley that look like they could be the right area (don't ask how, it involved a LONG detour for a closed freeway!) I'm sure it must be a real house (or houses) and I'm just curious to know if I'm guessing right the right area. I'm guessing near Moorpark, Oak Park or the Santa Susana Knolls. So anyone ever read an article about the movie where they talked about where they were filming?

Okay everyone, a big "woo, hoo" to Ree! I think she found the filming location for At Sachem Farm, Ojai in Ventura County, CA. Look at these pics from Ojai and tell me if you don't think this is the place: www.ojaiphoto.smugmug.com/gallery/2357742#P-1-9

Oops my bad. I could have told you it was somewhere in the wine country. I knew that. I thought you wanted to know specifically.
(I've never seen Ojai look this beautiful)

Oops my bad. I could have told you it was somewhere in the wine country. I knew that. I thought you wanted to know specifically. Yeah, but that is much more specific. Ojai isn't a very big area. I mean, my first instinct WAS Ojai or Filmore, but then everyone kept saying it was filmed in the Simi Valley and that just wasn't jelling with what we see onscreen. Well, I'm sure the photographers extensvie use of filters helped! ;D

Just saw this last night for the first time. Usually, I think Rufus is all gorgeous/lusty,etc....but in this one he was just so darn CUTE and sweet! You just want to hug him! I loved all the scenes alreadly mentioned. Also, the scene where he's telling the maid/cook to make a ham for Mr. Tang's visit, cracked me up so hard. When he said something about "carnviores" and did the 'impression' of eating meat like an animal and snarling and showing his teeth...then picked his teeth with his fingernail....I had to watch that 3 times in a row. So funny! Yet again, a movie where the leading lady wants some other guy that doesn't even compare to Ruf's character! *cough*Tristan&Isolde*ahem*

I've finally seen it, thanks to Ree sending me a VHS copy .I"ve watched it twice just to watch Rufus do his thing with this character.Enjoyed Nigel Hawthorne, of course. Was this one of his last films?Rufus tripped a few times in it..was that planned, or serendipity? Just a goofy, feel good movie from another time.

I LOVE this one, catdishy! If I need cheering up, this is the one I watch. What's more, I love that opening song, too. So glad you liked it. (Oh, and I think the tripping was deliberate).

Amongst all his celebrated skills, GE2, now I know he's also a master tripper...is there anything he doesn't do ? Yeah, its a tripping kind of film , to use an old cliche.I'll watch it again for nostalgia's sake and just to enjoy Rufus playing with the character of Ross.
