I perfectly agree with you Bluehorse, it is much more than a simply commedy, it gives wise messages through each characters, mainly uncle Cullen, like "We can't control the way things happen in this world, we can only control how we react to them." and "Life is a long experience of suffering, disappointment and chaos. But the moment you stop squirming against the catastrophe of being alive, music flies out of the dog-doo".

Great, great review Bluehorse! Thanks for taking the time to detail all the reasons this movie is superior to most "romantic comedies."

dreamer, yes, yes, yes!!! And not only the characters and what they say, the whole story speaks of wisdom. (and of HOPE) rueful, nothing to thank for, quite the contrary, I'm delighted if I can contribute to further discussions. My so called "review" was just the tribute I felt to owe that splendid gem. I simply felt the need to finally express my thoughts about this film. I really love reading the reviews on these threads and sometimes I feel everything has been said, but then again there's always something new to discover, because every person watches somehow a "different" film, since every person is different! And I find it fascinating to see how different sometimes opinions can be (ask tipou about this film ). So to all of you who love that film (and to those who don't) "Love of heaven... be to you"

I received my DVD just in time yesterday - I left work early today because of the monthly women's curse and craved nothing but a hot water bottle and a good movie. I hadn't read this thread before but I instinctively seem to have made the proper choice for a pick-me-up flick (besides, I neither mind music nor landscape shots).
What a lovely, lovely film! I love family stories with eccentric characters in them and lots of wisdom, love and humour, so this was perfect for me. It's not exactly a very realistic story, but a nice feel-good tale with also a bit of depth.
And although I must admit that I do prefer the slightly more mature Rufus, he was gorgeous in this role, as you said, BEING Ross! Unfortunately my DVD skipped on the scene with Mr. Tang playing the guitar, I'll have to try to polish it out so that I can see this cutest of laughs behind Ross's fingers.
The freaky scene atop the pillar seemed a trifle out of place in the story, but it gave Rufus a wonderful opportunity to show his talent for changing into a totally different person within fractions of a second.
And I LOVE the guitar scene with this beautiful tune. It looks quite real (and I'm even more delighted to read at the beginning of this thread that not only does Rufus sing, but also play the piano. He's got the perfect hands for that, should do a piano-player scene some time soon!)
I also like it when he behaves goofily. As he was chasing his uncle, I actually expected him to trip over his own feet, which he promptly did.
Oh yes, and the eye thing irritated me a bit at first, too (don't remember which of you mentioned that earlier). Not that I mind, I have a knack for imperfect faces because they're so much more interesting, but it never seemed so visible before.
A beautiful film with a very high I-wanna-cuddle-him-NOW factor!

Lovely film indeed! I've really enjoyed it. Rufus was gorgeus with his curly hair, and Ross character was adorable. He really seems to be playing the guitar himself! Btw soundtrack is really nice! Another film to add to my favs.

Very nice reviews, Bluehorse & KMK!! Thank you. Uncorked is one if not my most favourite family movie of all time. The allure of the stories, the messages and the struggles of the characters were therapheutic to watch. I've met real Ross(es) in life, brilliant artists-wonderful people but lost in the doubts of making it in life....I looked back at what Rufus said about doing what you love is the way to go, it means a lot to me. You know where you want to be but not sure which way is the shortest nor painless to get there....well, there isn't!! There are things called family and friends. At times you thought that they're burdens let alone annoying; a wall between you and your dream and you're the only one who seemed to care of every one's well being......but what you didn't see was they carried your suffering every day, try their best to sustain you with a hope you'd see doing what you love, every one is still all right. I love the fragile Ross, the old soul Laurie; the "Love of Heaven" scene is my absoloute happy tears award winner! Not just the kissing but the whole approach and emotion in it, too much for my jello heart ;D Too: the Ross & Kendall scene before the tofu ham dinner; I love the way she wiped off the lipstic smudge from his lips and the way he caress her head.....all because of his cute way of asking for a kiss

I have watched this a few times now, but I watched it again today (had a rubbish day and needed a pick me up). I don't know if it was because I was feeling a bit sensitive anyway but the scene where Uncle Cullen asks him why he hasn't play the piano for 4 years I really felt his fear at being found out and I ached for him and also later after he kisses laurie and he says he can't do it. Left me feeling a lot better about the world. Felt floaty

Isn't it lovely how this movie leaves you feeling so good afterward? ;D One of those good ones you can just watch again and again <3

Received my copy of Higher Love today and watched it with my daughter at her house whilst I was doing her ironing and she was making cards. I will be watching again more intently as I have read all your views on this film. I just wanted to log my agreement with you all that this is a real feel good movie but sends out a true message to us all.

One cannot watch Higher Love without thinking how wonderful it is for Rufus (and us!) that his love and talent for acting were discovered and pursued --much to his, and OUR satisfaction!! What a rare gift it is to be able to do what you love as a life-long occupation. Of course, we all know his success is in no small part due not only to his talent, but also his dedication and smarts, too. And willingness to be a "fussy beggar" if need be. ;D

You're so right, rufluvr! I started a re-watch when I was ironing this week (unfortunately there was not enough laundry to last for the whole time, but I'm looking forward to continuing soon) and loved it so much again. The subject of recognizing what you really want to do in life, of sticking to what you are passionate about vs. doing what seems to be the sensible "right thing" that just doesn't feel right to you is something I'm thinking a lot about at the moment ... I love the humour of the film which makes it different from that kind of somewhat cloudy esoteric lessons with lots of unrealistic advice and fairy-tale figures (the eccentric Uncle Cullen is well balanced by the rather down-to-earth characters of Ross, Laurie and Kendal). And it's clear from the beginning that Ross is no businessman no matter how hard he tries and how much he believes in his questionable projects, as one can see in the "sunk-cost fallacy" scene The wonderfully moving guitar concert has quickly become one of my favourite pieces of music

I watched this film twice yesterday - once on the TV and once while doing 350 ::)screencaps (okay I deleted some of them again ) I can't add a lot to what has been said. It is such a lovely heartwarming film and I loved every minute of it. Watching it was like diving into a comfortable place from where you don't want to leave again. Rufus was brilliant as always and he took over Ross' character from the start. Loved Nigel Hawthorne - he's a great actor. The scenery was so beautiful - the farm, the lake, the garden with the trees and the ponds. Beautiful music as well - Rufus playing the guitar (does anyone know if he can play the guitar???). One of my favourite scenes is when he and Laurie discover the little box in the elephant. But there are so many beautiful scenes.

I Rufus playing the guitar (does anyone know if he can play the guitar???). No, that was fake If you look closely, it shows a little bit sometimes (but never mind that ...) Glad you liked the movie as much as most of us do. It never fails to cheer me up, as does the soundtrack album (even if that doesn't have all of the songs).

I watched this lovely, lovely film again earlier today. It's been a while since I've seen it and I'd forgotten how good it made me feel the first time around. It's just so refreshing and I loooooove Rufus as Ross. So snuggly-wuggly cuddly-wuddly <sigh> he's just so lovely.
