having himself destroyed his only link to true humanity, he is no longer human, and so becomes a tool of war and destruction, at the mercy of the gods. Yes! I was thinking that killing him can be seen as an act of mercy from that perspective. Clytemnestra releases him from his awful fate. Perhaps had she not been so overcome by her own passions, she would have seen this. I'm reminded of that saying that revenge is best served cold. Imagine the punishment of her coming into his presence every day for years, with those same words! (But I guess she would not have lasted long herself had he lived.)

That was a powerful scene where Helen tries to trade herself and he asks her if she thinks that's enough for the life of his daughter, and Helen points out how he hates himself. I wish Rufus had been facing a better actress in that scene, but he brilliantly conveys Ag's pain and rage.

You also get a great sense from Rufus'performance of Agamemmnon's misdirected rage and blame for what he did to his daughter. If Helen hadn't run off with Paris, he wouldn't have been held to the pact he had suggested in the first place and he wouldn't have been "forced" to kill his little girl. When he rapes Helen, I think it was much out of revenge and punishment as it was lust.
I do like the one scene before the sacrifice with Agamemmnon and his daughter, where his lifting her up and playing with her in the garden. It shows even the most despicable of characters has a soul at some point. Unfortunately, Agamemmnon sacrificed that along with his daughter for his own ambitions.

Ok, I have made a pretty good attempt at checking the relevant threads, and I haven't seen any link to this video posted. Sorry if I missed one. It's a video of Rufus as Agammenon to the tune of Coldplay's Viva la Vida. www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjWTBT-o1pUI just love this because the song is so perfect, and now whenever I hear that song I get to picture Rufus as the heart-stoppingly gorgeous Aggie. So I had to get the song from itunes.

I'm glad you liked it. I listened to that song over and over during my workout yesterday, filled with pleasant thoughts that made the time fly by!
(If you have actual ipods, it is possible to get a program that lets you download and convert youtube videos to a format that your ipod will play. I don't know if it works for other mp3 players. That's how I got Uncorked on my ipod.)

I refuse to let you rain on my Agammemnon parade. He may be an overambitious, warped child-murderer, but he's OUR overambitious, warped child-murderer. (I won't accept that he commited that other vile crime, since they just made that up.) I'd take him over the wooden Paris any day.
I'm not a big fan of coldplay, but I liked this particular song, even before the video.

All hail mighty Agamemmnon! Sexy beast! Me... I'm not worried about going to hell for drooling in this case. Been there. Done that. Faced my own inner demon. A man like Aggie would not terrify me in the least. In real life, I do admit that rapists and child-murderers are not on my list of men to get together with, but- damn! If I were there with Rufus as Aggie- it would be very very hard to resist him. He is such a good actor! Being a fan of 300, the blood'n'guts battle scenes do not bother me. Rather, I look at what the soldiers are doing and how well they fight. At the beginning when the front line are shooting arrows on an upward arc and hitting enemies dead on- that was pretty ridiculous. Rather liked Aggie's hand to hand combat in his scenes though. Like some of you mentioned, I too wonder how a woman like Helen could ever do anything for a man that the would die for her. Not good casting there, I agree. I enjoyed this movie, but indeed, Rufus made it good. I would have been far more bored with it if he were not in it.

LOL! I'm glad you've made peace with yourself, vittoria. Given the chance, you could reform Aggie, I know it. Tipou, just follow vittoria's lead and embrace the attraction. You know you want to. And it's making Rufus sad that you're still denying it.
