Aaaaaah, so he does smoke - we were wondering about that weren't we? Now before everyone gets too worried, my extensive research into Mad Men, in which they do nothing but else but smoke and drink, may actually prove useful Jon Hamm who, like Rufus, doesn't smoke in reality, has said that in a single episode he may have to smoke 75 cigarettes. But that they are specially made nicotine free, non addictive, herbal cigarettes, specially designed to burn like normal ones. He also says that they taste terrible which is why there is lots of typical smoker's face pulling when you have to take a drag of one!! See, not everything i do is a complete waste of time!!! ;D

Oh, I'm so excited to watch it ... hopefully they'll show it some time in Germany (but I'll be damned if there won't be Rufusmania in Germany after TPOTE)!
Wry humour sounds great, he's just the type to make that work.

Aurelio Zen shared a fair amount of wry humor in the novels. He was a quite self- deprecating and ironic wit as I recall. Zen also was a keen observer of human nature and all its foibles. That type of sharp character suits Rufus strengths as an actor to a T. (And more importantly, I would think it makes it a fun and interesting role for him to play!) Maybe the original script was too "serious" as we've read, and if that original screenplay failed to capture the sense of humor Dibdin had already written into his Aurelio Zen novels, then I am especially glad Rufus suggested that a touch of comedy and lightness would be in order for him to portray Zen in Vendetta.

I agree, Rufluvr. The different books ranged in tone quite a bit, from very dark to a comic, but regardless of how dark they got, Zen always managed to keep a sense of humor about himself, others, and Italian society in general, even if it was sometimes gallows humor. Gotta love a wry, sarcastic man!

Reading the Zen books I always had the impression that this could be the perfect part for Rufus, if the script would also take up some of the humour of Dibdin's books. Now that we have been told that Rufus was allowed to change the script accordingly, we may be very curious about the result. As the Zen series is financed also by the ZDF, I'd expect that the ZDF would be the first German tv to broadcast it.

I gather the person who wrote this was also at the premiere and quoting Roof's comments. Wasn't Nell asked if she was press on the way in ?!!!!!

This is for those who saw the screening. I think I asked this on the Q/A and should have placed it here, as the focus there was appropriately Roof and the gals. Did the movie go along with the book for the most part?

I don't know whether this is new, but I just read that a Zen DVD is available for pre-order (amazon), with January 24th, 2011 mentioned as release date.... Just seen this and if TPOTE is anything to go by, the first episode of Zen in the UK should be shown in the week ending the 9th January, with the DVD being available to buy on the 24th, so not too long to see this again.

I wasn't aware that ZDF was involved - that's great news!

I figured from the article the other day that it would be on that week (it will make going back to work after the holidays a bit more bearable, having that to look forward to!) but the DVD so soon as well?

Argh - you're so lucky! I've been trying to find out about the German timing, but no mention at all at ZDF's website

Good grief, how embarrassing!! This looks like it was done prior to the screening, as the background looks familiar and Rufus is wearing the same clothes, so maybe there might be more interviews surfacing soon?
